Chapter 213 - Nobles Rise
Chapter 213 - Nobles Rise
Rhiannan POV
The air over the Noble Trial Grounds felt wrong.
Too charged. Too watchful. Like the entire kingdom had sucked in one enormous breath and forgotten how to let it out. From the private viewing balcony attached to my chambers, I could see the whole arena spread below the castle. Crystal. Marble. Runes. Three walls of enchanted forest. And one hundred people standing in the center of it all, handpicked from thousands of applicants.
A hundred people who had decided leadership was worth bleeding for. I sat forward despite Kaelith's repeated threats to physically strap me into my chair if I kept moving too much. My hands rested over my belly. The triplets were apparently awake and deeply invested in government reform because they had not stopped kicking for the last twenty minutes.
Below, Reyna stepped onto the center dais. Her crown caught the morning light. Power rolled from her in silver waves. “The gods don't care if you're scared,” she called. The arena went silent. “And neither do I.”
I smiled. There she was.
“Nobility is forged in chaos.” Her hands lifted. “Begin!”
The horn screamed. The first Trial exploded to life.
THE TRIAL OF BALANCE
Platforms ripped upward from the earth. Dozens of them. Floating. Rotating. Tilting beneath contestants' feet without warning. Then the fire started. Because apparently Reyna had woken up and chosen violence.
Flames rained from above. Illusions formed between the platforms. Dead parents. Lost children. Failed battles. Old lovers. Regrets. Fears.
Things buried so deeply inside people that even I felt invasive watching them dragged into daylight. Some contestants froze. Some screamed. A few immediately fell. Others kept moving. That mattered.
Not the fear. What they did while afraid.
~
TAELA VIREL, ELF-TIDE ORACLE
My brother stood three platforms ahead of me.
Alive. Smiling. Exactly as I remembered him before the fever took him.
“Taela.”
My heart broke anyway. Stupid fucking illusion. I wiped blood from my lip. The platform beneath me twisted sharply. Fire rained from above. “Focus.”
His smile widened. “Come home.”
My eyes burned. “You're not home.”
He reached for me. “You already buried me once.”
I crouched. Tide magic surged through my palms. “So stay fucking buried.”
Water exploded beneath my feet. I shot forward on a ribbon of summoned seawater just as the platform behind me erupted in flame. My gown ripped. Heat scorched my calf. I didn't stop. Three platforms. Two.
One. I landed hard on the final stone and nearly collapsed.
The illusion vanished. I looked back at the spirits controlling the Trial. “Bring me a bigger fear.”
My chest heaved. “I've already survived worse.”
~
DARNIK OF HOLLOWDEEP
The ledge tilted. Again.
“Tricky bastards.”
My war pick slammed into the stone beside me. The rune caught. Barely. My boots slipped over empty air.
Then she appeared. My daughter. Seven years old. Red braids. Missing front tooth. Exactly as she had looked the morning she died.
My grip almost failed.
“Papa?”
Fuck. No. Not this. Anything but this. She reached for me. “You left me.”
My chest cracked open. “I know.”
The illusion smiled sadly. “You couldn't save me.”
“No.” My voice shook. “I couldn't.”
The ledge rotated farther. I hauled myself upright. “But my grief doesn't own me.”
She vanished. Returned. Cried. Begged. I stepped toward her anyway. “My grief doesn't make me weak.”
I drove my gauntlet against the rune carved into the platform. Blue fire erupted. “It is why I'm still fucking here.”
The illusion shattered.

Rhiannan POV
FaeNet lost its mind.
WHO IS THAT DWARF???
SIR YES PUNCH THAT GRIEF.
HE JUST TANKED TRAUMA LIKE IT OWED HIM MONEY.
I laughed despite the knot in my chest. “Look at them.”
Elisha sat beside me, one hand firm against my thigh.
“They're fighting for something real.” His expression softened. “They're fighting for you, moonfire.”
I looked at him. “No.” Then back at the field. “They're fighting for themselves.” And that was better.
When the final contestant crossed the first ring, Reyna raised her hand. “One Trial down.” The surviving candidates sagged with relief. “Two more.”
Groans. Reyna smiled. “Let's see what kind of spine our future nobles really have.”
I fucking loved her.
~
TRIAL TWO: THE TRIAL OF BURDEN
The arena shifted. Wreckage erupted from the ground.
Collapsed walls. Flaming debris. Walls of rushing water. Binding shadows that grabbed ankles, wrists, throats. Each contestant was given an enchanted training construct designed to mimic a wounded companion. They had one job. Get them out.
The Trial punished selfishness. Drop your wounded?
The path became harder. Protect them? The Trial adjusted. Not easier. Never easier. But possible.
~
HALARAE OF THE SKYLANDS
My arm was bleeding. My lungs burned. The dummy weighed more than some horses I'd ridden. I hated it.
I hated the Trial. I hated the wall in front of me. Mostly, I hated every noble who had ever looked at me and decided blood mattered more than action. I dragged the wounded construct higher. Fire rolled across the top of the wall. “You have got to be fucking kidding me.”
The flames surged. Fine. I wrapped my body over the dummy. Climbed. Burned my shoulder. Kept going.
“This is for every time they said I wasn't noble blood.”
My fingers found the ledge. I hauled us over. We hit the ground together. For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Then the finish rune ignited. The crowd roared.
I rolled onto my back. “Still not noble enough?”
~
Rhiannan POV
I slapped both hands over my mouth. “Oh, I fucking like her.”
FaeNet agreed.
HALARAE IS A FUCKING BEAST.
THAT WAS A WALL OF FIRE.
IF THIS WOMAN DOESN'T GET A TITLE I'M STARTING MY OWN GOVERNMENT.
Reyna leaned toward the crystal microphone. “One more Trial, darlings.” She smiled sweetly. Way too sweetly. “Let's see what's left of you.”
TRIAL THREE: THE TRIAL OF MERCY
This one was quiet. That made it worse. Each contestant entered alone. A bound figure appeared before them. The Trial reached into memory and created someone believable. Someone who had harmed them. Someone who had attacked their family.
Ruined their home. Taken something they loved. The contestants were given a weapon. One choice. Kill. Or spare. Except nothing was that simple. Mercy wasn't always kindness. Violence wasn't always cruelty. Some threats couldn't be released. Some vengeance wasn't justice. The Trial wasn't looking for one correct answer. It was looking for why.
Some contestants swung immediately. Others cried.
Some questioned the prisoner. Some demanded evidence. A few simply walked away. Reyna watched every decision. So did Sasha. So did I. By sundown, only thirty remained.
Thirty. Out of one hundred. They stood before the crystal dais exhausted, bruised, bloodied, and looking like they'd aged several years since breakfast. I had been cleared to return to the grounds under the condition that I remain seated. I agreed.
Mostly. Reyna stepped forward. “You've all earned your place.” The courtyard quieted. “But now the real work begins.”
Behind her, a map of the kingdom appeared. Five territories glowed. “Three villages already stand.”
Emberreach.
Thornhelm Vale.
MoonHollow.
“Two more are coming.”
Starlight Ridge.
Hillshire Plains.
“One Lord or Lady will represent each village.”
Five seats.
“Beneath each will serve three Nobles. Fifteen total. Each Noble will have a support team, with ten additional candidates assigned to the larger administrative network.”
Golden names began appearing above us.
Fifteen Nobles.
Sirea Moonshade. Jakren Firehand. Taliya Crestwind.
Orren Stonefist. Velari Swiftstep. Nimya Skywhisper.
Tharn Blackroot. Deshira Flamesong. Jorik Fenwalker.
Meira Glowthorn. Dravos Redvein. Kaela Dunecrest.
Lurik Stonesinger. Zeena Vahl. Revian Dawnspear.
The crowd applauded each one. Then the five Lord and Lady finalists appeared.
Halarae of the Skylands.
Darnik of Hollowdeep.
Isira Thornveil.
Calen Sunroot.
Bryla Emberforge.
Reyna's eyes gleamed. “These five will not be chosen by us.”
The crowd quieted. “They will be chosen by you.” The reaction was immediate. She lifted one hand. “Voting opens now and remains open for twenty-four hours. Each village will select its own Lord or Lady.”
FaeNet absolutely detonated.
HALARAE FOR MOONHOLLOW!
BRYLA SAVED MY ASS IN TRIAL TWO. SHE HAS MY VOTE.
DARNIK IS HOTTER THAN A RUNEBLADE. LORD HOLLOWDEEP PLEASE.
I snorted. Poor man. He'd become a thirst trap before officially entering public service. Reyna continued.
“Each Lord or Lady may serve one five-year term, with one additional term only if re-elected by their people.”
More cheers. “Our Nobles serve one term only.” Her expression hardened. “No permanent seats.”
I stood carefully. Azarion immediately reached for my elbow. I let him. Mostly because my feet hurt. I looked out at the thirty. Then beyond them. At the thousands watching in person. Millions through FaeNet. People who had never been asked who should govern them.
“Let the people choose their future.” My voice carried across the courtyard. “And may the best leaders rise.”
The cheers shook the stones beneath my feet. My babies kicked. I smiled. This was what we were building. Not another throne surrounded by obedient mouths. Not bloodlines pretending birthright made them wise. Something new. Something messy.
Something answerable to the people living beneath it.
The future was taking shape right in front of me.
And for once?
The people themselves would decide who stood at the helm.
