Chapter 209 - Beware the Bone Queen

Chapter 209 - Beware the Bone Queen
Goddess Nythera POV

I felt Veltherion die.

Across realms. Across mountains. Across the thin, fragile membranes separating mortal earth from the divine. One moment, his presence burned like a diseased star against my senses. The next...Nothing.

I opened my eyes. The Eternal Watch stretched endlessly around me, silver clouds drifting beneath skies filled with stars that had never belonged to any mortal world. For centuries, the Forgotten King's corruption had stained those stars. Now his light was gone. I should have felt relief. Instead, every instinct inside me screamed.

“No.”

I reached beyond the veil. Past Rhiannan's growing kingdom. Past the Trial Grounds. Past the thousands of souls whose belief burned around my daughter like newborn constellations. Farther. Down. Into the ashen ruins of Veltherion's fortress. I found his corpse.

Broken. Poisoned. Dead. And standing above him...
Lorelei. The Bone Queen smiled as creatures knelt at her feet. She believed she'd won. Foolish woman. Then I saw it. Blackness. So small even Lorelei's ancient magic hadn't detected it. A seed curled beneath her ribs. My blood ran cold. “Veltherion.”

The bastard had known. His body was failing. His kingdom was collapsing. His magic was dying. So he'd done what creatures like him always did when faced with extinction. He found another vessel.

The seed pulsed. Once. Lorelei didn't react. She couldn't feel it yet. But I could. It wasn't Veltherion himself. Not exactly. It was something worse. His corruption. His hunger. His ancient darkness stripped of flesh and restraint, buried inside a woman already drowning in her own ambition. Bone and shadow. Death and rot. Two powers that should never have touched. “Oh, you stupid bitch.”

My voice rolled through the Eternal Watch. Lorelei stepped over Veltherion's corpse and claimed his throne. She thought herself free. She had no idea she'd just carried part of him with her. I lifted my hand.

Silver fire erupted across my fingers. There was no time to descend. No time to explain. But I had an Oracle.

“Reyna.”

I found her thread instantly. Bright. Sharp. Connected to mine through prophecy and divine purpose. I seized it and sent the vision. Not gently. There was no fucking time for gentle. I hurled it through the veil like lightning.

Veltherion dying. Lorelei standing over him. The shadow striking her chest. The seed beneath her ribs.
Black roots spreading toward her heart. A crown made from bone. A throne drowning in darkness. And behind Lorelei...Something enormous opening its eyes.

I forced my voice through the vision.

"The Forgotten King is no more."

Stars shook around me.

"But his darkness did not die with him."

I saw Reyna somewhere far below suddenly go rigid.
Good. She heard me. I pushed harder.

"Beware the Bone Queen."

The vision fractured. But before the connection broke, I sent one final image. Lorelei standing before Rhiannan. Her body split between white bone and living shadow. And beneath her feet...The world burning. My warning followed.

"The seed lives inside her."

Then the connection snapped. Silence returned to the Eternal Watch. I lowered my hand. For several moments, I stared down through the veil toward my daughter's kingdom. Rhiannan was becoming stronger. Her children were growing. Her people believed. Her kingdom was rising. But balance was shifting again. Veltherion was dead.

Lorelei was ascending. And something new had just been conceived in the darkness between them.

I watched the mortal realm turn beneath me.

“Reyna,” I whispered. “Warn my daughter.”

Because the war against the Forgotten King was over.

The war against what came after him had just begun.

Oracle Reyna POV

The vision hit me hard enough to knock the breath from my lungs.

I gasped and dropped my scrying crystal. It struck the floor with a sharp crack and rolled beneath the table, still glowing violently as Nythera's voice thundered through my skull.

The Forgotten King is no more.

Images scorched behind my eyes.

Veltherion. Broken. Bleeding. Dead. Lorelei standing above his corpse. Smiling. Then darkness struck her chest. I saw it enter her. Saw the tiny black seed curling beneath her ribs.

Growing. Waiting. His darkness did not die with him.
I staggered. Torvax caught me before I hit the floor.
“Reyna!”

His arms locked around my waist. “Reyna, what is it?”

I couldn't answer. Not yet. My entire body trembled. I'd received thousands of visions. Deaths. Wars. Births.
Kingdoms falling. I'd watched futures unfold before they happened and learned long ago that prophecy rarely arrived politely. But this? This felt different.

Nythera hadn't shown me a possible future. She'd sent a fucking warning.

“Reyna.” Torvax grabbed my face gently. “Look at me.”

I forced my eyes to focus. “He's dead.”

Torvax froze. “Veltherion?”

I nodded. “The Forgotten King is dead.”

Relief flashed across his face. I grabbed his arm.
“No. Don't.”

His expression changed. “Don't celebrate.”

“Why?”

“Because he did something before he died.”

My stomach twisted. “He put something inside Lorelei.”

Torvax went still. “A curse?”

“I don't know.” That frightened me more than anything.
I was the Oracle of the fucking Realms. I hated saying I don't know. “A seed. Corruption. Some piece of his power. Nythera showed me black roots spreading toward Lorelei's heart.”

“Is he possessing her?”

“No.”

At least, I didn't think so. “He's gone. Nythera was clear about that.”

I swallowed. “But his darkness isn't.”

And Lorelei already possessed enough darkness of her own. Fuck. I pulled away from Torvax. “We have to tell Rhiannan.”

“Reyna, wait.”

I was already moving. I ran from my chambers. Actually ran. Robes gathered in both fists, bare feet slapping against the castle floor while guards flattened themselves against walls to avoid being mowed down by a panicking Oracle. Very dignified.
Fuck dignity. I nearly murdered a servant carrying towels. “Sorry!”

“Oracle?”

“Apocalypse shit!”

He immediately stepped aside. Smart man. I found Rhiannan in the royal garden. Of course she was eating. She sat beneath a shaded alcove with her enormous pregnant belly supported by cushions while Azarion rubbed her swollen feet. A bowl of sugared grapes rested on what little lap she had left. She looked peaceful. For approximately three more seconds. Her eyes found me. One eyebrow lifted.
“You look like hell.”

I bent forward, hands on my knees. “Give me... a fucking... second.”

Azarion immediately stopped rubbing her feet.
Rhiannan lowered her grape. That alone told me she understood something was wrong. I straightened.
“Veltherion is dead.”

Silence. Rhiannan blinked. “What?”

“Dead. Actually dead.”

Her mouth opened. Then closed. She studied me. “But.” Gods, she knew me too well.

“But,” I confirmed.

Her expression darkened. “Fuck.”

“Nythera contacted me.”

Now Azarion stood. All softness vanished from him. I continued. “Veltherion used his last magic on Lorelei. He planted something inside her. Nythera called it a seed.”

Rhiannan's hands immediately moved over her belly. I hated watching that instinctive movement. Every threat became about those babies now. About her people. Her family. Everything she'd built.

“What kind of seed?”

“I don't know.”

Her eyes widened. “You don't know?”

“Thank you for emphasizing the terrifying part.”

“Sorry.”

“His corruption survived him. His darkness. Maybe his magic. Maybe something worse.”

Azarion growled. “Then he's not dead.”

“No.” I shook my head. “He is.” That distinction mattered. “Veltherion is gone. Nythera showed me his corpse. Whatever is inside Lorelei isn't him.”

Rhiannan slowly stood. Azarion immediately offered his hand. She took it. “Then what the fuck is it?”

I thought about the final image Nythera had forced into my mind. Lorelei. Half bone. Half shadow. A world burning beneath her feet. “I think it's becoming something new.” That silenced all three of us. Rhiannan stared toward the gardens.

“The Bone Queen.” I nodded.

“Nythera's exact warning was to beware her.”

“Lorelei already wanted his throne.”

“Yes.”

“And now she has his power growing inside her.”

“Potentially.”

Rhiannan sighed. “Fucking fantastic.”

Azarion's eyes had gone cold. “We kill her before it matures.”

“Maybe.”

He looked at me sharply. “Maybe?”

“We don't know what happens if she dies.”

That was the problem with unknown magic. Destroying the vessel might destroy the seed. Or release it. Or complete whatever transformation Veltherion had started.

“We watch first,” I said. “We learn what it is.”

Rhiannan was silent. Then she nodded. “Fine.” Her eyes began glowing. That beautiful divine gold that usually made everyone else in the room reconsider their life choices. “We watch.”

She stepped closer. “We prepare.” One hand remained protectively beneath her belly. “But nobody panics. Trial Three continues. Noble Trials continue. Outreach continues.”

I smiled faintly. Of course. Veltherion had spent months trying to frighten her into stopping. He never understood that Rhiannan became more dangerous when cornered.

“I'll start searching the prophecy archives.”

“Do it.”

“Sasha needs to monitor Lorelei's known territories.”

“Already fucking planning on it.”

Azarion moved beside her. “And if Lorelei comes here?”

Rhiannan looked toward him. Then toward me. Her expression became terrifyingly calm.

“Then Bone Queen or not, she learns the same lesson Veltherion did.”

I raised an eyebrow. Rhiannan picked up another sugared grape.

“This kingdom is not hers to fucking touch.”
