Chapter 203 CHAPTER 203
Chapter 203 CHAPTER 203
Elena took a breath that seemed to come from somewhere deep, a place where old grief still lived. When she spoke, her voice carried the weight of years spent carrying secrets alone.
"other than the faces, my sister and I were different in every way that mattered," Elena began. "I am loud, opinionated, impossible to ignore, or so I’m told. Alessa was quiet. Withdrawn. She never questioned anything, never challenged anyone. She simply accepted whatever life placed before her."
Ariel leaned forward, her hands gripping the arms of her throne. Through her bond with Zack, she felt his steady presence, his readiness to intervene if this became too much. But she needed to hear this. Needed to understand.
"Because of her nature, I made it my duty to protect her," Elena continued. "From those who would take advantage of her gentleness. From a world that devours the soft-hearted." Her jaw tightened, a flicker of old anger crossing her features. "When she died, I carried guilt for years. I told myself I had failed her. That I should have seen something, done something, been there when she needed me most. But that was until I found the truth about what happened."
She paused, her gaze distant.
"What truth?" Edwin asked, the question escaping before he could stop himself, his face pale with the same desperate hope Ariel felt burning in her own chest.
Elena turned to him, something like understanding in her eyes. "I'm coming to it."
She faced Ariel again, and when she spoke, her words fell like stones into still water.
"Lucien and Alessa were both victims of two kings' greed for power. My father king Everest, and Lucien's father wanted to expand their territories, to become more than they were. So they agreed to an alliance. And to seal such a deal, each king offered their child for bonding."
Ariel felt the blood drain from her face. "An arranged mating."
"Precisely." Elena's voice hardened. "My father knew I would never agree to such nonsense. I was too difficult to be traded like livestock. So Alessa carried the cross instead."
The throne room seemed to shrink around them, the air growing heavy with the weight of old sins.
"When Alessa died, both kings knew they had played a part in her death," Elena said. "But they were too proud to admit it. The Eastern King, my father, blamed Lucien. He pushed for Ashwood to punish him, to destroy him. And the Ashwood King, your grandfather, he protected his son. Buried the whole affair without ever asking Lucien whether there was truth to the allegations."
She spread her hands, empty and open. "The truth didn't matter to either of them. Only power. Only pride. And two innocent lives were ruined because of it."
Ariel's voice emerged barely above a whisper. "You said you learned the truth."
"I was angry for a long time," Elena admitted. "I believed Lucien had done something to my sister. Hurt her in some way that drove her to death. Until I got my hands on her journal."
She reached into her bag and withdrew a small leather book, weathered with age and handling. "Alessa wrote everything. And I learned that Lucien was the only one actually trying to help her through her depression. The only one who saw her suffering and tried to ease it."
Elena opened the journal, her fingers tracing the faded pages with reverence. "They had both found their true mates, you see. Lucien met a human girl, your mother, during a school exchange program at a school that welcomed both wolves and humans. And Alessa, my sweet sister, she found a kind-hearted omega within our palace."
Ariel felt Zack stiffen beside her, felt the shock ripple through their bond. True mates, forced apart by political games.
"But they were terrified," Elena continued. "Terrified to disobey the two kings who held their futures in their hands. So they fantasized together about escaping. Finding some place where they could both be free to love as they wished. Where their hearts could choose instead of their crowns."
She closed the journal, her hand resting on its cover. "Then my father discovered that his daughter had already been marked by an omega. And suddenly that omega disappeared from the palace grounds overnight. My father made sure of that."
Ariel pressed her hand to her mouth, understanding blooming like a dark flower in her chest.
"Alessa ran to Lucien for comfort," Elena said softly. "But it wasn't enough. The loss, the hopelessness, the knowledge that she would never see her love again. She drowned herself in the bathtub in Lucien's room."
The words hung in the air, terrible and final.
"And even after our father knew exactly why Alessa had killed herself, he still wanted to destroy Lucien's life." Elena's voice cracked with old fury. "As if destroying his own daughter's life wasn't enough. As if someone had to pay, and it couldn't be him."
She fell silent, the journal clutched against her chest like a shield.
"I've known the truth for years," Elena finally said. "And now my father grows old. I'm almost ready to take the throne. But I decided I will not inherit his grudges. I will not continue a war built on lies and pride." She looked directly at Ariel, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "That's why I came. Because you needed to hear the truth. Because both our kingdoms need to start from a clean slate."
She stepped closer, close enough that Ariel could see the individual tears tracking down her cheeks. "I want to inherit the Eastern Kingdom from a place of truth. Just like you said a moment ago. My sister would want that. And so would Lucien."
The dam broke.
Ariel felt it happening, felt the walls she'd built around her grief and fear and desperate hope crumbling all at once. She rose from her throne, two steps carrying her to Elena, and then she was sobbing uncontrollably in the other woman's arms, all the poison of years leaking out through her tears.
Elena held her, shaking with her own weeping, and they cried together, two daughters carrying the sins of fathers who had never deserved their loyalty.
"I'm sorry," Elena whispered against Ariel's hair. "For how I came in. For letting you think... I'm so sorry."
Ariel could only nod, her face pressed against Elena's shoulder, her fingers clutching the fabric of her clothes like a drowning woman clinging to rescue.
When she finally pulled back, wiping her face with trembling hands, she found Edwin wiping at his own eyes.
After they had calmed, Ariel took Elena's hands in hers. "Thank you," she said, her voice hoarse but steady. "For clearing the air. For coming all this way to tell me." She managed a watery smile. "This is the best gift anyone could have given me on my coronation day."
Elena laughed, the sound surprised and genuine. "I'm glad. I didn't bring anything else, I'm afraid. I was worried anything from the Eastern Palace might be viewed as suspicious. Dangerous, even, to the new queen."
Ariel actually laughed, the sound bubbling up from somewhere deep and healing. "Probably wise."
Elena's expression grew serious again, but softer now. "There's one more thing. I believe the alliance your grandfather and my father formed was a good idea, in principle. Two kingdoms working together, stronger together than apart. But not like this. Not using children as commodities to seal deals." She squeezed Ariel's hands. "If you're open to it, I'd like to discuss reestablishing relations. New terms. Better terms. Ones built on truth rather than sacrifice."
Ariel felt something warm expand in her chest, something that felt like hope made solid. "I'd like that very much."
"I should leave you now," Elena said, stepping back with a glance toward the throne room doors. "You've had a long day, and I've taken enough of your time." She turned back, her smile sad but genuine. "Thank you for hearing me out. For believing me."
"Thank you for trusting me with the truth," Ariel replied. "I'll organize a formal meeting. Soon."
Elena nodded, then turned and walked toward the doors, her steps lighter than when she'd arrived, as if she'd finally laid down a burden carried too long.
The doors closed behind her with a soft thud.
Zack turned to Ariel, his eyes searching her face with familiar concern. "How are you feeling? About all of this?"
Ariel looked at him, and felt the last of the fear drain away. "Redeemed," she said, the word emerging like a prayer. "I can carry the Carter-Ashwood name now. Knowing my father wasn't a criminal. He only left to save himself. To survive a judgment that was never fair."
She took his hand, lacing their fingers together, and felt his love wrap around her like armor.
