Chapter 24 Twenty four
Chapter 24 Twenty four
ZINNIA'S POV
The feeling wasn't just In my heart, I could feel it in my bones and blood. It felt just like a key turning in a lock I never knew was there. A hidden door inside me swung open and this wave of warmth, this crazy sense of rightness, poured into the new empty space. It was the most scared I'd ever been and the calmest, all at once.
Valois put his forehead against mine. We were both breathing hard. His hands came up and held my face, his thumbs brushing my cheeks. His touch felt different now. Less like taking, more like checking. Like making sure I was real.
"That," he whispered. His voice sounded amazed and serious, like he'd won something terrible. "That was the bond finding its mate. The first thread tying itself into place."
Mate. The word should have freaked me out. It sounded like animals, like something permanent and wild. But with all that warm rightness filling me up, it didn't feel strange. It just felt true.
He kissed me again. Softer this time. Like he was stamping the connection closed. I didn't pull away. The fight, the anger, all my thoughts of Luke, were just drained out of me. I was empty and this new, scary truth was rushing in. This crazy feeling of coming home to a place I'd never even visited washed over me, so strong it made my eyes water.
The kiss got deeper. It wasn't just his mouth anymore. It was like that new open channel between us started feeding the kiss, making it more. The world got small. The big room, the city lights, the painting of my face, the book of dead women, all of it disappeared. There was only this. The heat of his mouth. The feel of his hands moving from my face to my waist, pulling me tight against him. The solid wall of his body. And inside me, this faint, glowing thread I could almost see behind my eyes, warm and alive, tying me to him.
He pulled back. His eyes were glowing again with that soft amber light. It should have been scary. It just looked like he was being honest.
"It has begun," he said. He didn't sound happy. He sounded sure, and heavy, like he was stating a fact.
He took my hand. His fingers laced through mine. He didn't ask. He turned and led me away from the wall of windows, away from the view of the world I understood.
We walked across the cold marble floor, past the table with the half eaten chocolate dessert, toward a dark hallway I hadn't gone down. Toward where the bedroom had to be.
The contract, the money, the debt, all the reasons I had told myself, they just melted away. They were nothing. What was happening in my body, in that new open space inside me, was huge. It was real.
Tonight wasn't a business deal anymore.
It was a collision of Two paths, shoved together by bad luck, now clicking into one single, unavoidable line. I was walking toward it, my hand in his, and the part of me that loved Luke was screaming from farther and farther away. The part of me that was awake now, that could feel the thread, just kept walking.
VALOIS'S POV
The click was quiet, but I felt it. A soft, deep snap in the air that wasn't really air. Her reaction proved it. The shock, the gasp, the slow understanding in her eyes that something inside her had changed for good.
I moved to make the moment solid. Forehead to forehead. A shared space. I told her what it was. The bond finding its mate. Giving it a name made it real for her, gave the chaos inside her a shape. Calling it the first thread was on purpose. It meant there was more coming. A whole fabric to weave.
The second kiss was important. It had to be different from the first. Not a demand, but an offer and a seal. She didn't fight it. The resistance left her body, replaced by a quiet alertness. The chemical and magical chain reaction started by the bond's first move was working, flooding her system with feel good chemicals and a deep, old knowing of coming home. It was the usual body response, but seeing it in her, in this last one, felt new.
The kiss got deeper on its own, fed by the new open line between us. It wasn't just physical want anymore, though that was part of it. It was the bond starting to feed itself, creating a loop of feeling and connection. I let myself feel it too, the rightness of it, the sharp, clear brightness of her life next to mine. The world outside the window stopped mattering. There was only the collision.
When I stopped the kiss, I let her see the amber in my eyes. A reminder of what I am. That I am not just a man but the wolf in the painting and The anchor for this bond.
I said the plain truth. It has begun. I put the full weight of the words into them. This wasn't a seduction. It was a beginning. A line you don't come back from.
Taking her hand was a choice. It was leading, not pulling. It was offering to guide her into the unknown. She followed. Her fingers were cool in mine, but she didn't let go.
Walking her from the window to the bedroom was a physical symbol of leaving the old world behind. Moving toward the making real of the new one.
I felt the second her mind let go of the reasons. The contract, the debt, the boyfriend. They fell away like old skin. Her focus was narrowing, zeroing in on the biological and magical need driving her now. The collision.
This was the target. The transaction was the door. The bond was the house. And now, we were stepping over the doorstep together. All the waiting, the reveals, the emotional pushes, all of it led to this exact point: her walking beside me, willing, into the dark, connected to me by a thread of light she could now feel in her soul.
The night would do its job. The physical act would tie more threads into the bond. But the important work was already done. The door was unlocked. She was inside. The rest was about time, and training, and keeping her safe.
As we walked into the dark hallway, I didn't feel like I'd won. I just felt the heavy weight of the job, and the quiet, fierce sense of ownership that came with finally having what was mine. The last Vossen wasn't lost in the world anymore. She was here. And the work of making her truly mine, in every way that counted, was now finally starting.
