The next few days passed in a blur of training and conflicting emotions. I woke each morning with a gnawing sense of dread, my mind reeling from everything I had learned. Each piece of information was like a puzzle that didn’t quite fit together, a confusing mosaic of truths I wasn’t ready to face.
Dante was there every step of the way, pushing me to my limits. At times, his methods were harsh, but I could tell he was doing it out of necessity. This wasn’t a game. This was survival.
I stood in the middle of a wide open field, the wind whipping through my hair, trying to steady my breath. Before me, Selene and the others were waiting, watching, waiting for me to do something—anything—to prove that I was ready. To prove that I could do this.
"You have to focus, Aurora," Dante called from behind me, his voice carrying across the wind. "Clear your mind. Don’t let the doubt take hold."
I swallowed hard, nodding. Easier said than done. How was I supposed to clear my mind when everything felt like it was crashing down around me?
Selene stepped forward, her eyes narrowing with concentration. "We’ve seen your potential," she said, her voice steady. "Now, it’s time for you to see it too."
The words felt like a challenge, but they also ignited something deep within me—a flicker of hope, a tiny spark that I could hold onto. I closed my eyes, focusing on the beating of my heart, trying to steady myself, to feel that elusive power that had been hidden inside me.
The air around me seemed to hum with energy, vibrating just beneath the surface. I could feel it now—something pulsing through me, something raw and untamed. I reached out with my senses, searching for it, pulling it from the depths of my being.
The ground beneath my feet trembled slightly, and I opened my eyes to see the earth crackling with energy, responding to me in ways I couldn’t fully understand. My heart raced as I watched the ground shift and swirl, as though the very earth itself was alive, bending to my will.
I gasped, stepping back in surprise. "What… what is this?"
Selene smiled, a flicker of approval in her eyes. "That’s the power within you, Aurora. The connection you have with the earth, with the forces that shape this world. It’s only the beginning, but you’ve taken the first step."
Dante moved closer, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my chest tighten. "This is only the beginning," he said softly, almost to himself. "You’re stronger than you realize."
But I wasn’t sure if that was true. Could I really be strong enough to face Valerian? Could I really be the one to stop him? I wasn’t sure I could even control the small tremors I had just caused, let alone take on someone like him.
The doubt lingered, creeping back into my mind despite my best efforts to push it away.
"We’ll help you," Selene reassured me, sensing my hesitation. "But you have to keep going. You have to trust yourself."
I nodded, though my heart was still heavy with uncertainty. The pressure of it all was suffocating, and I didn’t know how much longer I could keep pretending that I had everything under control.
As the day wore on, the training grew more intense. Each exercise pushed me further, forcing me to tap into something deeper, something darker. I felt the power growing within me, but it was also terrifying. What if I couldn’t control it? What if I lost myself in it?
Dante was always there, guiding me, his presence a constant reminder of what was at stake. I could see the determination in his eyes, the weight of his own past pressing down on him, and I knew he was pushing me not just for my sake—but for his own.
He had his own demons, his own history that he couldn’t outrun. And now, he was tied to me in ways I still didn’t fully understand.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the field, we paused for the night. The silence that fell between us was heavy, filled with unsaid words and unasked questions. There was so much more I needed to know, but I didn’t know where to start.
Dante came to stand beside me, his expression unreadable. "You’re doing well," he said quietly, as if trying to reassure me.
I nodded, though the doubt was still there, gnawing at me. "I’m not sure I can do this, Dante. I’m not sure I’m ready."
"You don’t have to be ready right now," he said, his voice soft. "We’ll help you get there. One step at a time."
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to trust that I could do this, that I could be the person they all seemed to believe I was. But deep down, a part of me was still terrified—terrified that I wasn’t strong enough, that I wasn’t the hero they thought I was.
But what choice did I have?
Tomorrow, we would face more challenges. Tomorrow, the training would continue. Tomorrow, the clock would tick down, and I would be forced to confront whatever was waiting for me.
Valerian was out there. And I was the only one who could stop him.
