I didn’t know how long we had been walking, but it felt like an eternity. The silence between Dante and me was suffocating, thick with tension and unspoken words. His grip on my wrist hadn’t loosened, his knuckles white from the pressure. I could feel the cold of his touch creeping up my arm, but it wasn’t just physical—it was as though his fear was bleeding into me, wrapping itself around my heart.
What had just happened? Who was that man? What did he mean when he said I was the answer to everything? I couldn’t make sense of it. And yet, the more I tried to push the thoughts away, the more they gnawed at me, demanding answers I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear.
"Dante..." I finally whispered, breaking the silence that had become unbearable. "Who was that man? And why did he say what he said about me?"
His jaw clenched at my words, and I could feel the weight of his hesitation. For a moment, I thought he wasn’t going to answer, that he was going to shut me out again, but then his voice broke through, low and strained.
"He’s someone I never wanted you to meet. Someone who has been watching you for longer than I care to admit."
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. "Watching me? Why?"
Dante’s eyes flicked to mine, and I saw something there—something that hinted at a deep, painful truth. But he didn’t say anything more. Instead, he pulled me into a nearby alley, away from the eyes of any potential onlookers. The air was thick with the scent of rain, but there was something else in the way Dante stood, in the way his posture was so rigid, like a man preparing for battle.
I couldn’t hold back any longer. "Tell me the truth, Dante. Please."
He exhaled sharply, as if the weight of the world had settled on his shoulders. He ran a hand through his hair, his eyes distant, lost in some thought I couldn’t reach. And then, finally, he spoke.
"You were never supposed to be involved in this," he began, his voice low, almost defeated. "None of this was ever supposed to touch you. But now that it has, there’s no going back."
I stepped closer, my mind racing. "What is it? What’s going on, Dante? What’s happened to me?"
He met my gaze, and for the first time, I saw vulnerability in his eyes. "You were always meant for something bigger. More dangerous. And I... I should have protected you from that."
I could barely breathe as his words sank in. "What do you mean? What am I supposed to be?"
He looked down, his lips pressed into a thin line, and I knew he was struggling with something, something he didn’t want to share. But I needed to know. I couldn’t keep living in the dark.
"You’re... you’re the key," he said finally, the words coming out in a rush, as though they were too heavy for him to carry. "You were born for this. For this war, this battle that’s been raging for centuries. You’re connected to it, Aurora. You always have been."
I felt a cold chill run through me, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from him. "Connected to it how?"
Dante’s expression hardened again, and he took a step back, his eyes closing as if he couldn’t bear to look at me. "I can’t tell you everything. Not yet. But I’ll tell you this—you’re stronger than you know. And you’re going to have to be strong if we’re going to get through this."
I didn’t understand. How could I be stronger than I knew? What war was he talking about? And what role did I play in all of it?
The fear that had been creeping through me, slowly building with every passing moment, exploded into full-blown panic. "What does this mean for me, Dante? For us?"
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he turned away, his back to me as if he couldn’t bear to face me. "I wish I could tell you that everything would be okay," he said, his voice tinged with something almost like regret. "But I can’t promise you that. What’s coming... it’s going to change everything."
I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t process it. My world was spinning, everything I thought I knew about my life was unraveling, and I didn’t know how to stop it.
Dante turned back to me, his expression unreadable, but his eyes—his eyes were full of something I couldn’t place. "You have to trust me, Aurora. If we don’t stop this, everything will fall apart. You have to be ready."
I shook my head, the weight of his words sinking in. I didn’t know what I was supposed to be ready for. I didn’t know what was happening, and the more I tried to understand, the more the questions piled up, pressing down on me until I could barely breathe.
I wasn’t ready for this. I wasn’t ready for any of it.
But as I stood there, staring into Dante’s eyes, I realized something else. I didn’t have a choice anymore. Whatever was coming—whatever was happening—I had no choice but to face it, no matter how terrifying or impossible it seemed.
And as Dante took my hand, his grip firm, his eyes full of determination, I knew one thing for sure: I was in this now. There was no turning back.
