Chapter 30: Feeling Scorned'
In her wildest dreams Gift never thought that Felix would reject her, not to mention humiliating her this way.
'Why?' she screamed in anguish.' When we were still courting you still had your affairs and I never complained except to lay claim on you when the girls over step their boundaries. Did I not keep forgiving you your sexual escapades? now it's your turn to forgive me knowing that it all started with bewitchment but you tell me you have fallen in love with someone else? I can't accept that because I believe we are destined to be together but if you insist on allowing this person come between us, I am ready to become your second wife. Make her your first but please accept me as well for I have realised and come to accept what I kept denying before now, that I cannot live without you. Life itself would be meaningless. So, please make her the first wife and I the second. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would make this outrageous suggestion but there you have it. Let it serve as your punishment to me'.
Felix looked at her and felt pity for her. He had known that it would not be easy parting with Gift and though desirable Rather than be enemies with her, it was dangerous being friends with her even on a platonic level because she would keep hounding him to an acceptance of her terms. Thank goodness he was leaving tomorrow but he knew he could not run away from this dilemma forever. He had to solve it once for all. Why was fate so cruel sometimes. If she had not been bewitched they would still have been together but then again he reasoned, he would not have come as far as he had with his job, academic pursuit and a more matured view on life and relationships. So thanks to God as well for this.
'Gift please, there is no need for all this drama. You are making a scene and my parents will be here any instance and I don't want them to see you this way. So please forget about me, get on with your life as I have. We shall remain friends of course but nothing more than that. I can't marry two wives. My father did not and even if he did, I won't. You talked about destiny just now but have you reasoned that it could be destiny that threw us apart because the fates knew that we won't be compatible as a wedded couple? Though we had been so compatible as lovers. Wipe your tears, get a hold on yourself and get on with your life. You have your life, a long one at that, ahead of you. Don't throw it away by waiting or dreaming for the impossible. You are very beautiful and no man could possibly resist you and you can get any man of your choice'. He concluded
'All, except the one I really want', she said with painful regret. 'You could keep numerous girls but you can't keep two wives? I shall go now so that you can rest for your journey tomorrow but I want you to bear it in mind that I did not accept this decision of yours. You will have to include me - your first love - into your future. Since I seem to have lost out on being a part of your present'.
