Chapter 28: Explanation

Gift went ahead and told Felix how they started seeing each other first in secret before it became public knowledge because the man had not wanted to keep the affair under wraps for much longer. He deliberately let the information about their relationship drop here and there and made sure they were seen at strategic places. This she later found out was so that Felix would not be kept in the dark but know of Gift's infidelity and call it quits but it had been she- Gift who had called it quits because she had been under the influence of some powers he used on her.

'Later, after I had asked you to let me go on with my life without you, he took me to alot of unthinkable places. Places that I shudder to name. All in a bid to ensure I never went back to you and if possible that I killed you. He actually wanted me to kill you with my own hands but when it got to that, where I was asked to stab your image, I, who had permitted our snapshots to be burnt after a pair scissors had been used to significantly cut you away from me, could not do it. Since that was what he was asked to make sure I did and since I refused, threatening to stop seeing him if he insisted, he stopped his persistence. Till today, I don't know where I got the strength to resist the powers he conjured on me but I believe it must have been the strength of our love'. After telling him all these, Felix was dumbfounded. He found the story unbelievable and he had lost his faith and trust in Gift but if what she said was true and there was a possibility that it was, having heard some ungodly rumours about the man in question then Gift had been Bewitched into jilting Felix.

'I can understand all this and against my better judgement, I believe you.

'Oh, thank you', she said sure that she had won the battle already.

'But what about the other men? Did they also give you charmed sweets or drinks laced or spiked with love portions? I mean from what I heard, you threw yourself at anyone who as much as glanced at you. Was your interlude with Sam such that you not only lost your reasoning but your modesty and control? You even threw yourself at my own, my very own best friend Desmond. Unbelievable! I know that men will be men but if he could not control himself, how about you? And what about the others before him? Not that it is any of my business', he concluded painfully. The pain of her persistent and ultimate betrayal had been too much. He knew that he may be unable to forget her and her exceeding good looks was not helping matters. He was curious with himself for thinking these things when he had thought he had moved on with his life and was going to advise her to do likewise.

She could talk about the strength of their love empowering her to resist Sam's devious plot against him and breaking out of the love spell he had cast on her but his argument was when she regained her senses, why did she not come looking for him to explain? Why become a full fledge prostitute that made Lawrence advise him never to marry her else he, Lawrence would break out of their friendship?
