Chapter 9 Invite Him to Grandpa’s House

Chapter 9 Invite Him to Grandpa’s House

Evelyn's POV

But in the books about magic gems, there were still occasional mentions of the Phoenix Clan, although only in a few lines.

"This is too precious, I can't accept it." I pushed back his outstretched hand and shook my head.

Even though I didn't know much about this academy, I knew this bracelet was valuable.

Honestly, I didn't expect him to give me such an expensive gift. I refused again, saying, "This is really too precious!"

Kane's hand froze in mid-air. I saw that in those deep golden eyes, the hopeful light that had been there instantly dimmed. I don't know if I was seeing things, but I actually felt like he looked a bit hurt.

He still held up the bracelet in his hand, "For you, " he said."

Seeing him like this, the words of refusal got stuck in my throat and I couldn't say them. "Then... then I'll accept it, but let's say I'm just borrowing it to wear, okay?"

After Kane heard me agree to accept the bracelet, he directly placed it in my hand.

I didn't want to let down his kindness, so I put it on my wrist right away. The moment the Flamecore Jewel touched my skin, a warm current began to slowly flow through my veins, making me feel instantly at peace. This feeling was somewhat like when Kane rescued me from Starlight Spring that day.

"Let's go, now we can finally get breakfast!" I looked up at him and said. Kane's eyes were sparkling.

We walked side by side toward the cafeteria. The morning air was very fresh. Maybe because the environment here was so good, I even felt this morning, when I looked in the mirror, that my skin was much better than before.

Along the way, I kept chattering away as usual. Kane only occasionally replied with a few words, but I was already used to this way of getting along.

We soon arrived at the cafeteria. There were many people there today, but Kane and I still went to a quiet corner.

I chose my favorite blueberry pancakes and orange juice. Kane only ate a burger, and he ate slowly at a leisurely pace.

I thought that if I told him that I found him a bit cute at this moment, he might just turn around and leave. Just as I was spacing out, Kane suddenly asked me, "What's your favorite color?"

"Misty blue."

He looked at my clothes, then seemed to be thinking about something and nodded.

"What about you? What's your favorite color?"

"Gray, I guess."

I thought the conversation would end there, but he spoke again, "What kind of weather do you like?"

"Sunny days, with sunshine, very warm— like you!"

Kane lowered his head, but I saw his ear tips turning red. I covered my mouth to keep from laughing out loud. "So what else do you like?"

"Fire."

I nodded in response, "But why are you asking all this?"

"To understand your preferences and analyze your personality. Liking misty blue and sunny days means you probably long for peace and warmth in your heart, but you subconsciously carry some sense of distance."

"That actually makes sense." Seeing him talk so logically, I nodded in agreement.

Just as I was about to ask more questions, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I took it out and looked - it was a call from Arthur. I glanced at Kane, and he nodded at me, indicating I could answer.

"Hello, Grandpa!" I answered the phone, speaking cheerfully.

"Evelyn, how are things at Thornwick Academy?" Arthur asked with concern.

"Great, Grandpa. Although a lot of things are unknown, I'm already adapting. Oh, and Grandpa, I've made a new friend!" I said with a smile, glancing at Kane across from me when I mentioned the friend.

"Looks like sending you there was the right choice. But is this new friend a boy or a girl?" Arthur asked with some curiosity.

I felt inexplicably embarrassed, but it was a perfectly normal question, so I continued, "It's a boy. His name is Kane Smith, and he's a really good person."

Kane, who was eating his burger with his head down, immediately stopped when he heard me talking about him. He looked up at me with a questioning gaze.

"That's good, then I can rest easy."

I could even picture Arthur's wrinkles bunching up as he smiled.

"So do you and your friend have time this weekend? You could bring him home to visit, and I'll make you both something delicious. How about that?"

I didn't expect Arthur to invite Kane to our home. After a moment of surprise, I said into the phone, "Let me ask him."

I covered the mouthpiece of the phone and whispered to Kane, "My grandpa is inviting you to come over this weekend. Do you want to go? If you don't want to..."

"I want to." Kane answered me immediately without waiting for me to finish, without any hesitation.

I could tell he genuinely wanted to go to Arthur's house with me, not out of politeness or obligation. So I nodded happily and said to Arthur on the phone, "Grandpa, I'll bring my friend home this weekend. You have to make us lots of good food."

"Okay." Arthur laughed happily on the other end and gave me a few more reminders before hanging up.

"Kane, you actually agreed?" I looked at Kane in surprise after hanging up.

"Yes." He avoided my gaze a bit, but I could tell that was the expression he had when he felt shy.

Before I could say anything else, a familiar figure suddenly appeared by our table.

It was Ambrose.

He stood beside us with his gray-white hair, an imposing presence, expressionlessly fixing his gaze on me.

"Evelyn, come to my office after class. I have something to discuss with you." His voice was cold, emotionless. After speaking, he turned and left without giving me any chance to respond.

Both Kane and I were stunned.

"Why is he looking for you?" Kane's face darkened, the mark on his forehead began flickered faintly with light, and his voice carried suppressed anger.

"Kane, it's okay." I looked at him and said in as relaxed a voice as possible, trying to calm his emotions.

"To talk?" Kane's eyes were full of vigilance. I could see his distrust of Ambrose.

"Trust me, since he came to me on his own, I also want to see what he's really up to! I can handle it, nothing will happen."

I tried to calm his anxious emotions.

After a moment, Kane nodded as if making up his mind, "Okay."

I smiled at him, looked at the finished breakfast, and said casually, "Then let's go to class!"

Kane and I left the cafeteria. The first class was Magical Creatures 101. I wasn't clear about what this class would cover, and I just thought it might be similar to biology class in human schools.
