Chapter 57 Kane Didn’t Come to Pick Me Up

Chapter 57 Kane Didn’t Come to Pick Me Up

Evelyn's POV

I nervously watched Vicky, afraid she might say something that would make me lose confidence.

I saw her smile at me and say, "While your technique still needs practice, your talent is undeniable. However, according to the requirements, you still can't heal others for now, but... if Kane is still willing to be your guinea pig, then I think your skills are more than sufficient."

I actually couldn't imagine practicing on Kane for now, or rather, I couldn't bear the thought of him getting hurt.

"Alright, that's it for you."

Vicky removed the last Healing Charm, and the centipede-like suture line instantly disappeared, leaving only a faint white mark on the finger - the trace of new flesh.

"You should go meet up with Kane now; otherwise, I'm afraid he'll come looking for me to get you back."

Vicky joked, her tone relaxed.

I packed up my things somewhat embarrassedly, thanked the professor, and quickly walked out of the classroom.

However, when I walked out the classroom door, that familiar figure wasn't in the hallway.

"Kane didn't come to pick me up? Strange..."

I frowned, a sense of loss welling up inside me, but more than that was worry. Kane would never miss this without reason, unless something urgent happened, or... he ran into trouble.

I felt my pocket, my fingertips touching a piece of cold metal.

It was the pocket watch we won at the ball.

I remembered Kane saying this watch could sense each other's location. Since that was the case, today was the moment for it to come in handy.

I took out the pocket watch, thought of Kane, and gently pressed the button.

The pointer on the dial began spinning wildly, making a faint buzzing sound, then stopped with a tremble, pointing firmly in the direction of the library.

"The library?"

I put away the watch, turned and walked in that direction. Setting aside my worries, I pushed open the library's heavy doors. The familiar scent of old books hit me, mixed with the smell of parchment and dust.

I lightened my steps, slowly searching along the aisles between the bookshelves. Finally, in the deepest corner, I saw Kane.

He was buried in a pile of ancient books taller than his head, his brow furrowed as he held a quill, rapidly recording something on a piece of parchment. His expression was focused to the point of obsession. Scattered around him were more than a dozen books with obscure titles - Study of Primordial Bloodlines, Compendium of Inhuman Creatures, Magical Traits of Mutated Species...

The moment I saw him, I finally felt relieved. As long as he was safe, nothing else mattered.

I quietly walked up behind him without making a sound.

Over his broad shoulder, I could see the page he was studying had a strange totem drawn on it. He was researching my species.

"Kane," I called out softly, my voice carrying a barely noticeable tremor.

Kane suddenly turned around. After seeing it was me, the surprise in his eyes suddenly turned to guilt. He quickly stood up and closed the book. "Evelyn, I'm sorry, I lost track of time. I..."

"It's okay; it gave me a chance to come find you."

I smiled and sat down beside him, staring at the book in his hands.

"How did you know I was... ah, the watch!"

Once he realized, he looked at me and said, "How was class today?"

"Great, Vicky taught me something new, and she still thinks I'm very talented."

"That's good."

Kane relaxed. He continued, "I'm still trying to figure out what kind of shapeshifter you are, but..."

"I feel like I already know so many of your characteristics, yet I still can't find a match," he said somewhat dejectedly, hanging his head.

"I'm not so anxious anymore. Next time, we can search together." I held Kane's hand and looked at him seriously.

Over the next few weeks, our life passed peacefully. Every morning, Kane would appear at my dorm door on time to take me to breakfast. We'd go to class together, and I learned so many new things. In the afternoons, we spent most of our free time in the library.

Kane continued investigating the mystery of my species, while I reviewed healing magic theory beside him. Although we still hadn't figured out what species I was, Kane didn't seem discouraged. He said that no matter what I was, as long as it was me, it was enough.

Of course, we still watched movies and walked by the lake, enjoying sweet dates as a couple.

My healing magic improved rapidly.

Vicky not only taught me theoretical knowledge and patiently guided me through practical basics, but also took me to handle different situations in various settings, and I gradually gained much more confidence.

Although Shapeshifting 101 still wasn't showing any progress and Ambrose still mocked me, I no longer cared like I used to.

Because I knew I had Kane, I had my healing magic, and I also had... the Academy.

Yes, the Academy was still secretly helping me, and even cheering me up.

Those who tried to trip me in the hallways would mysteriously step on their own shoelaces and fall; those who tried to put dead bugs in my books would find a croaking frog suddenly appearing in their backpacks.

And Magical Healing and First Aid 101 became my absolute safe zone.

No one dared bully me in this class, because if Vicky discovered such people, she would directly deduct points or even ban them from attending class.

"Today's lesson is about the anatomical differences between humans and shapeshifters, and the differences in life-threatening rescue situations."

Vicky stood at the podium, displaying complex skeletal diagrams and Mana Circuit diagrams.

"Although we're all humanoid, in terms of magical energy flow pathways, shapeshifters have a unique 'core'..."

I was listening intently when suddenly, a white owl flew in from outside the window, landing precisely on my desk.

It didn't drop off a letter and fly away like ordinary owls, but gently pecked the back of my hand with its beak, handing me a piece of letter paper emanating a faint silver glow.

I opened the letter paper in confusion. There was only one line of writing, the ink seemingly still faintly shimmering:

[Dear Evelyn, please come to the Central Courtyard immediately.]

I instinctively looked out the window. In the Central Courtyard, the sunlight was perfect, golden spots of light scattered on the grass, swaying in the wind.

It seemed Kane had flight class there today. Why would he suddenly ask me to go there?

Before I could figure it out, Vicky noticed something was wrong. She walked to my side, her gaze falling on the letter paper in my hand.

"Ms. Gray?"

Holding the letter paper, I felt somewhat at a loss. "Professor... I..."

She reached out her hand for me to give her the letter. After reading it, she said, "Go ahead, don't worry. Your course progress is already ahead, it won't delay anything."

I nodded, packed up my things, and quickly walked out of the classroom.
