Chapter 35 Flowing Light White and Ink-Dark Purple

Chapter 35 Flowing Light White and Ink-Dark Purple

Evelyn's POV

Following the hairstyle on my phone, I chose an elegant low updo. A few slightly curled strands fell by my ears, flattering my face shape while giving off a casual sexiness. The bun had no excessive decorations, looking clean and neat, perfectly showing off my slender neck, the ideal spot for wearing that necklace.

I finally worked through the tutorial step by step on my own hair. Though I'm really not that skilled with my hands, I managed to complete it after several attempts. Looking at myself in the mirror, I couldn't help but sigh: "It actually looks pretty good."

At that moment, the third drawer on the left of the dressing table abruptly sprang open, making a clicking sound!
I walked over to the vanity and found a brand new set of cosmetics inside. I picked up the foundation brush and started a simple makeup routine.

Then came eyeshadow, eyeliner, and lipstick.

I was very satisfied with the finished look.

My originally plain features now looked deep and bright. I swept a layer of light brown eyeshadow at the corners of my eyes, shimmering with tiny specks of light under the lamp, making my skin look even more radiant.

The lip color was a sheer coral tone—not too loud, yet bright enough.
After all this was ready, I walked back to the magic wardrobe.

I reached out, gripped the handle, my heart pounding violently.

I took a deep breath and yanked the cabinet door open.

At last, the closet was not empty. In the middle of the wardrobe hung a stunning white gown that gave off a gentle radiance, as if moonlight were streaming over it.
It wasn't pure white, but an ivory white with an extremely subtle pearlescent sheen. The dress material looked like some kind of incredibly light, high-quality silk, flowing with a water-like texture under the light.

The sleeveless style was uncomplicated and graceful, with a ring of small silver crystals adorning the hem, resembling dew gathered on flower petals.
The skirt cascaded in layers, like a blooming white rose, reaching down to the ankles, both elegant and easy to walk in.

Below the dress lay a pair of silver heels, not too high, looking very comfortable.

"Wow..."

I felt compelled to extend my hand, my fingers gently brushing the chilly silk material. The feel was exceptionally sleek, like making contact with a cloud.
"Kane was right, it really is white," I murmured, the corners of my mouth lifting involuntarily.

White...

Within the realm of magic, white commonly symbolizes innocence, impartiality, or... a sort of pristine "empty canvas."
This dress was impeccably beautiful, perfect for an evening ball, and perfect for me as a newcomer.

But it was too clean.

At this ball where we're supposed to find our partners based on hints, how would this white dress with no magical pattern hints help my partner and me find each other?

Or could this be an indirect signal, implying that I would be without a dance companion this evening?
Could Kane be standing me up, not showing up at the ball...

I ended my excessive pondering, inhaled deeply, tapped my cheeks to push aside those pessimistic ideas, and then began to get dressed.
The moment the dress zipper went up, I felt a wonderful sense of fit, as if this dress had been custom-made just for me.

After slipping on the high-heeled shoes, I studied my reflection once more—dressed in the gleaming white gown, showcasing a slim neck and fine collarbones.
For a moment, I felt like that wasn't me.

I picked up the wooden box from the table, opened it, and took out the fire opal jewelry set.

I picked up the necklace and fastened it behind my neck. The cool metal touched my warm skin, the ruby settling right at the center of my collarbone, rising and falling slightly with my breathing, as if coming alive with me.

I put on the earrings and bracelet one by one.

I carefully stored away my previous bracelet and brooch in the jewelry box, thinking about how I'd already received two gifts, and now I was wearing this even more valuable third one.

The white dress, originally cool and pure, instantly adopted a different feel because of this passionate, fiery jewelry set.
Ice and fire, white and red, this extreme contrast actually created a strange harmonious beauty.

"Alright, finally ready to go."

I lifted my skirt and turned toward the door.

Kane should have already changed and be sitting in his room waiting for me.

I gripped the doorknob and turned it gently.

"Click."

The door opened.

However, the corridor beyond the door was not vacant. Kane was, in fact, already waiting there.
He'd clearly been waiting for a while, and just as I stepped out, he happened to be standing at the door. The moment he saw me, his movement of adjusting his cuffs froze.

Those profound golden eyes, resembling coals that had been set ablaze, immediately flared with incredible warmth as his look landed on me.
"Kane, how did you get ready so fast."

I felt slightly disoriented, growing a little uneasy beneath his stare, and found myself unconsciously pulling at my dress.
After speaking, I finally got a clear look at Kane standing at the door.

He was wearing a dark purple formal suit today.

The color was extremely deep—at first glance in the dim hallway lighting, it looked like pure black, but whenever he moved, the fabric would shimmer with a noble and mysterious violet luster.

He wore no tie, his collar slightly unfastened, exposing his slim neck and adding a bit of lazy sexiness.
What surprised me most was the flash of dark red at his cuffs.

Those were cufflinks made of the same material as my necklace.

And on his left index finger, a low-key but impossible-to-ignore fire opal ring.

I pointed at his hand, then at my own neck, "You... yours matches mine?"

A satisfied smile tugged at the edge of Kane's lips. He approached me with long, deliberate steps, drawing nearer with each one.
He lowered his head, his voice as deep as a low note drawn from a cello, "Yes. White really does suit you."

"But Kane, you've essentially matched us together outright?" I questioned him, gesturing toward the two of us, with a hint of astonishment.
"Sort of. I don't trust the academy's random assignment. Since it can't guarantee we'll be a pair, I'll take matters into my own hands. No matter what, we absolutely cannot be separated."

As he said this, he moved even closer to me, close enough that I could hear his heartbeat.

He spoke in an entirely composed manner, as though this were the natural order of things. Still... the outcome truly was what I had hoped for.
"Doesn't this... doesn't this count as cheating?" I thought this particular aspect of Kane was rather adorable—this was, in fact, his way of making us a couple.
"You might think of it as a justifiable interference," Kane said in a very practical tone, seeing absolutely nothing improper about it.
Seeing his determined look, I couldn't help but laugh.

"Fine, I'll be in your hands tonight." I reached out my hand to Kane, waiting for him to take it so we could exit together.
