Chapter 18 Suppressed Fury
Kane's POV
I saw Evelyn's surprised expression and couldn't help but soften towards her. I really didn't want to let those who hurt her get away with it, but she asked me to wait, and I couldn't refuse.
Facing Evelyn's question, I lied, nodded and said, "I bought it."
I thought I used the most sincere tone, and she seemed to believe me.
Actually, the moment I received her message, I felt Evelyn would need a change of clothes, so I took it directly from the magic wardrobe in the dorm. I didn't want her wearing anything with someone else's magical scent on it.
I watched Evelyn happily go to the changing room next door, my mind full of Esko's words—this was definitely not a simple accident.
Evelyn quickly changed and came in. As expected, this outfit suited her perfectly.
The magic wardrobe had chosen Evelyn's favorite misty blue color. I saw her pin the bird brooch on the left side of the hoodie. My eyes swept to her neckline, where the exposed gauze still looked jarring to me.
I heard her ask Esko if she could return to the dorm. After getting a positive answer, I helped her walk out of the infirmary.
Along the way, Evelyn walked very slowly, and I deliberately slowed my pace to match hers. People around us still looked our way. I listened carefully for anyone discussing what had happened in Basic Potions, but there wasn't a single word about it.
I helped Evelyn quickly reach Starflame Tower dorm. At the door to her room, I stopped.
Evelyn suddenly grabbed my wrist, asking where I was going. I tried to make my expression look more convincing, answering in a low voice, "You rest first. I'm going to the cafeteria to get lunch."
Evelyn looked somewhat uneasy. She still didn't let go of me, staring at me and asking again, "Are you really just going to get lunch?"
"Of course." The violence in my heart calmed down a bit as I looked at my wrist.
She finally let go, and I watched her close the room door.
I left the dorm building, but didn't go to the cafeteria. Instead, I walked straight to Celia's office.
Just as I reached the door, I saw students quietly discussing as they walked out. When they saw me standing there, they quickly ran off, avoiding me.
I knocked on the office door and walked in. There were still students inside who hadn't left.
Celia saw it was me and froze for a moment. I saw her rub her temples with some frustration, then heard her say to me. "If you're here to ask about Evelyn's situation, I can tell you..."
I had no patience to hear her say something to brush me off. I coldly interrupted her, asking, "Professor Martin, what are the investigation results?"
Without Evelyn by my side, I didn't need any pretense. I wasn't afraid of scaring others, I just needed Evelyn not to be afraid of me.
Celia looked at me and said, "There's no evidence to suggest this was intentional. However..."
I didn't want to hear them continue with their empty words. My eyes swept over everyone in the office as I spoke, "Fine. If you say there's no evidence, then I'll help you find it."
I saw Celia frown, as she said, "Kane, I know you're worried about Evelyn, but the school has its rules."
I heard her say such ridiculous words. School rules—was me being bullied also part of the school rules? I could tolerate being bullied myself, but I couldn't accept Evelyn being hurt.
"If the rules can't protect people who follow them, why should we follow them?" I looked at her, asking one word at a time.
I saw Celia's mouth open and close slightly, but she didn't say a word. I continued, "If we don't get results today, tomorrow in Basic Potions, I'll go to the classroom and wait for you until the school gives me a satisfactory answer."
My words stunned both Celia and the students who hadn't left the office. There was a girl in the corner who seemed strange, I felt like I'd seen her somewhere before.
Celia clearly didn't expect me to say this. I saw her face turn awkward, then finally, she waved her hand, telling everyone to leave the office.
I watched everyone else leave and stood quietly outside the office door, waiting.
Twenty minutes later, that girl whose face looked familiar entered the office again. I heard Celia discuss with her inside. "Emma, you should know what you did. Seraphina wants you to make a public apology in front of all the teachers and students tomorrow, and take a month off to go home and reflect."
I finally remembered why Emma looked so familiar—she was the one standing next to Evelyn when I first met her.
I didn't know why she did it, but whoever it was, anyone who hurt Evelyn would pay the price.
I saw her crying as she opened the office door. She glared at me and ran off.
I knew the matter had been resolved.
The office door was pushed open. I saw Celia walk out, a stern expression on her face. She didn't acknowledge me and just turned and left.
I checked the time and quickly went to the cafeteria to pack two servings of tomato pasta before returning to the dorm. I knocked on Evelyn's door, trying to make my expression look gentler.
The door opened quickly. I saw Evelyn's eyes light up after confirming it was me. "Kane, you're finally back! You didn't go do anything, did you? I was so worried!"
Evelyn stepped aside to let me in while rambling on with many questions.
I walked into the room and placed the pasta on the low table in front of the sofa, opening the lid. The steaming hot aroma filled the air.
"No, I didn't." After hearing my answer, she quickly came in and closed the door. I saw her sit on the sofa and pat the spot next to her, telling me to sit.
I sat beside her, moving a bit closer to her. She didn't notice my movement at all and started eating with big spoonfuls.
I saw she was still wearing that misty blue hoodie. At her collarbone, the edge of the white gauze was slightly red.
"Does it still hurt?" I asked in a low voice.
"Not anymore. Eat your food! Don't you have class this afternoon?"
Hearing Evelyn's question, my heart relaxed a little.
I had just picked up my fork when I heard Evelyn's phone ring. She picked it up, her eyes wide open, voice rose in surprise, "Kane, guess who just sent me a message?"
