Chapter 19 His Interrogation
\[Tabitha’s POV\]
Pain shoots through me as light penetrates through my closed eyelids. Fuck, I felt like I had been hit by a ton of bricks. What in the world happened last night after I came home?
Prying my eyes open, I slowly sit up and rub my temples while I wrack my brain in an attempt to come up with the cause of the pain I was feeling. However, I immediately regret it when images that seem more like dreams start to appear that involve me and those vampire twins getting down and dirty right on my fucking couch.
“Dammit!” I snarl, jumping up and immediately regretting it as a wave of dizziness hits. “Those bastards! How could they?”
More like, how could you? The small voice in the back of my head counters, causing my heart to constrict painfully and bile to rise up in my throat as guilt crashes into me.
Right. How could I? I actually let the very things that took everything away from me fuck me, and I actually enjoyed it. I couldn’t even deny that.
Frowning, I try to ignore the sudden flare of desire I feel due to remembering exactly what we did.
“Get it together, Tabitha,” I hiss, smacking both my cheeks.
Once I’m feeling slightly more clear-headed, I look down at my watch and feel my eyes grow wide as I realize that I’m running late.
Cursing, I rush upstairs and hop in the shower, then quickly change and pull up my hair before heading out.
When I arrive at the precinct, the chief is standing in front of my office, and I know that I’m going to get an earful. However, when his expression turns from annoyed to relieved, I know that something is horribly wrong.
“What is it?” I ask, bracing myself for whatever kind of case he has for me. “What happened?”
“More murders,” he responds, seeming uneasy.
“Murders,” I repeat, feeling a chill race down my spine. “As in multiple. Are they all related to the last two?”
Any lingering frustration and guilt I felt about what happened the night before disappears entirely as a chill races down my spine and fear begins to bubble.
“They are,” he confirms. “I need you, Anthony, and Atticus to go and investigate. There has to be something that we are missing. I’ve had men staking out the cemetery to try to catch the one responsible, but it is almost as if they’re a specter.”
“I don’t think a large lizard creature could go unnoticed,” I point out, frowning. “There has to be someone helping. I’ll go and check it out,” I continue. “But I can’t make any promises.”
“That’s all I ask,” the chief nods. “We’re counting on your good news.”
Nodding, I turn and prepare to leave, but stop as I find Atticus and Anthony already standing behind me. Both men have looks of frustration on their faces, and there is a thick, awkward atmosphere between them. Fuck, why did I have to be working with them today?
“Are you just going to stand there?” I snap, letting my gaze travel from one to the other. “We have a case to handle.”
I don’t wait for either to reply before I’m heading out and making my way to the parking lot where my car is waiting. But when I arrive, I feel someone reaching into my pocket and pulling out my keys.
“What the hell?” I hiss, whirling around to find Anthony standing so close that his heat seeps into me, soothing the last bit of unease that I’m feeling. “Give them back.”
“Nope,” he counters, twirling them around on a finger. “You look like shit, Tab. I’ll drive.”
“No,” Atticus snaps, grabbing the keys. “I’ll drive, and you can ride in the back seat.”
“Why the hell would I do that?” Anthony hisses, attempting to take the keys back. “And who are you to even consider driving Tabitha’s car?"
“Her future,” Atticus responds, causing Anthony’s face to turn red with rage. “What? Shocked, pretty boy?”
“Tabitha!” Anthony growls, turning his gaze on me. “What the fuck is he talking about?”
For a moment, I don’t speak as shock over Atticus’ response rushes through me. Hell, I didn’t even know what the fuck he was talking about. Did he think that a single kiss and peeping through my fucking kitchen meant that we were together? He was full of shit, but before I can say any of this, the need to get back at Anthony for what he did hits me.
“You heard him?" I shrug, deciding to play along. “You understand basic English, right?”
I knew what I was doing was low, but Anthony started this when he cheated on me with that bitch Holly. He was the one who ruined everything, so why the hell should he even care if I was with someone else?
“Now, can we get going?” I continue, walking around to the passenger side of the car.
Once I’m inside, I wait as Anthony and Atticus continue to stare each other down, and when I think I’m going to have to repeat myself, both men climb in even though they look like they want to kill each other.
As we begin to move, I once again regret my decision to go along with Atticus, as the atmosphere around us grows dangerous and is nearly suffocating. And when we arrive at our destination, I find that I’ve never been happier to have to inspect a dead body, or rather, bodies.
Jumping out, I rush forward to find a group of officers standing around what looks to be a pentacle made out of five bodies. Hissing in shock, I stop and take in their splayed open torsos, which are missing vital organs just as the others had.
“Tabitha I’m assuming,” one of the detectives says, coming over to join me. “I’m Officer Leonard. I’d appreciate it if you would come in for questioning.”
“Questioning,” I repeat, raising a brow. “And why the hell would I need to do that?”
“This,” he says, holding up a note. “We have reason to believe that you are involved with all of this.”
Not responding, I snatch the note from him and take in the words that are written on it while my heart drops.
We warned you to run far away, Tabitha Sullivan, and you didn’t listen. Now, you will have to live with the consequences.
Again and again, I read the warning as Atticus and Anthony came to join me.
“Please,” Officer Leonard pushes. “It would be better if you just cooperated.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Anthony demands when two officers attempt to grab me. “Someone better tell me what the hell is going on right now.”
“Please stay out of this,” Officer Leonard says. “This is between us and Miss Tabitha.”
“Like hell it is.”
As the words leave Anthony’s lips, his fist is flying and connecting with Officer Leonard’s jaw, causing a sickening crack to fill the air before the other officers burst into motion.
“Can everyone just freeze?" Atticus snaps, allowing a burst of energy to erupt from him that causes ice to start to encompass our feet. When everyone is stuck and unable to move, he lets his gaze take in the scene. “Now, let’s talk this out like reasonable adults.”
