Chapter 62

MATT

I’m not sure what Ashley did to him, I just know that when I came upon Brock, he had his face in the stream and was scrubbing. It was strange seeing him like this after he was so composed every other time he’d threatened me. Stepping off my motorcycle, I was slow to approach him.

“That’s one bitch of a girlfriend you have there,” he spit at me as he heard me approach.

“Yeah, that’s why I dumped her,” I lied. She wasn’t a bitch, but whatever she did to get him out was damned impressive.

He laughed wryly and then turned around to me.

Brock’s face was hot red, his eyes looked like he’d rubbed sand into them; even his usually blue irises looked red.

“What on earth did she do?”

“Mace? Never seen mace like this, so probably some of that anti-shifter spray that humans sell,” he griped. Okay, I was officially proud of her. She was able to defend herself without me, that was a relief. I only came up here to keep an eye on the place and protect her. I don’t know how I missed him making his way in. “Do you have my fucking money?” he asked.

I looked away uncomfortably.

“I don’t, I’m going to sell the house,” I explained.

“Market’s gone down,” he chided. “Plus, with interest, you'll still be almost a hundred grand in the hole."

“Leave her out of this, you’ll get your money,” I said flatly.

“Leave her out of this? You get to make demands now?” his voice was chilling. “No, I don’t think so. She maced me! That was new … I mean, speaking of new, I’ve never fucked a fox girl before.”

His smile was sickening. I wanted to shift and kick the shit out of him for even teasing that.

I couldn’t.

I knew better.

Dragon shifters get every advantage in life, they can breathe fire, can fly, they’re stronger than almost any shifter you put against them. I remember hearing tales as a kid that they used to be treated like royalty.

Oh, how far they’ve fallen!

“Look, you broke into her home, she had to defend herself.” I was mostly guessing at what happened.

"I just asked to talk to her," he frowned. "Sure, I was in her house before she was, but she should learn to lock her doors, especially out here. There’s no telling what lurks in this land,” he smiled.

“Leave her alone! I’d sell a kidney if it would get the money to you faster,” I tried to say.

“That’s only worth twenty-six thousand dollars. Do you have four kidneys?” he was having fun making me squirm. “She’d be fun to have though, a sexy little fiery fox to keep as a pet. Give her to me and I’ll take fifty thousand off,” he offered.

“She’s not an item for sale, you’re disgusting,” the wolf inside me was begging to shift.

My wolf side was begging to rip his throat out for even suggesting he mate with her.

She was mine, entirely. The only reason we didn’t have pups yet was that I didn't want to risk it with this bastard holding a debt over my head. It looked like I made the right call on that.

“Just a thought,” he smiled coldly.

He suddenly shifted, he had a terrifying size and wingspan! He was gone before I could even reply.

He could kill her if he got the chance. Mace wasn’t going to stand up to him in his dragon form.

She was supposed to move to the human’s city. I needed her to be far from here.

He wouldn’t have the balls to fly into a human city like that, he’d be shot down in minutes. Out here, where not even shifters would notice him, it was like she was a fly in a Venus flytrap.

All I could do was watch.

How many cans of bear mace spray would it take? How many times would he show up in her new home until he just snatched her from it? I had bought our house for her, off his dirty money, and now she might have to pay the price for it.

The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I should just drop this.

He’s gigantic.

I should leave him alone and hope he leaves her alone. The image of him stealing her away, of him even laying one fucking finger on her made my blood boil. She was mine.

My mate.

My whole fucking world.

I couldn’t just roll the fuck over like this and hope he didn’t touch her!

Starting my bike, I followed the dragon’s shadow deep into the mountain, past the cabin, further than I’d ever gone. The road ended and I left my bike there to travel on foot. I’d kill him for threatening her, it didn’t matter to me if I got hurt anymore.
