Chapter 44 I Don’t Know Who I Am
Chapter 44 I Don’t Know Who I Am
Malik’s POV
“Hi, Malik. Thank you for updating us about the person who was about to sabotage this deal, but we’ve checked the records, contacted the embassy at home and abroad. We have used all the connections we have and we are certain that there has not been a Gemma Princewill to touchdown Los Angeles. At least not yet.”
“Ok, but can you still be on the lookout? The person in question is a major threat to my girlfriend.”
“Best believe we will. I will inform you if anything changes.” Caleb said and I nodded before I ended the call.
Sloane and I had been walking on thin ice for the past couple of days.
That did not mean that when she told me that this arrangement was about to get sabotaged and ruined, I was not going to step up.
I hated the fact that I was the centre of attraction in all of this. I hated the fact that I was the one that she was studying.
I was still pissed at her from last night, but I was learning to not let my emotions get in the way of my better judgement, but it was so hard.
Alcohol was calling my name. Screaming my name at the top of its lungs because at this point, it was my best companion.
I was trying my hardest not to succumb to its calls.
It was either I drank or I sought another form of companionship.
And so, I headed straight to Sloane’s room. I knocked loudly on the door.
I didn’t wait for her to give me a response before I pushed the door open and met her sprawled on the floor. Tons and tons of paper were littered over the marbled floors as she stared at the screen of her MacBook and IPad simultaneously.
On noticing the movement behind her, she turned her head to look at me and I stopped walking, the both of us observing each other.
“What’s up?” I quizzed so casually as though things were not sour between us both currently.
“I’m trying to find the inconsistencies that were flagged by the supervisors so that I can correct myself and no one else has to be involved in all of this.” She explained.
“You know you really do not have to worry about all of that, yeah?”
“You’re literally blowing hot and cold and I don’t get it with you.”
My face contorted in confusion because what the fuck did she mean.
“First, you hit me with the ‘the heart wants what it wants line’. That means I should clearly leave you the fuck alone because I’m the last person that you want to be with. Now, you come into my room and act like you care. I am not in the right frame of mind to play these types of games with you. If you so damn badly want to show that you care about someone, I am not the right person, Malik!” She tossed as though she had been pissed for way too long.
If there was anyone who ought to be pissed here, it was me.
“Okay so if I don’t show that I care about you, my girlfriend who do I show that I care about then?”
“I’m not your fucking girlfriend. Your girlfriend is Anita, Malik.” Sloane responded once again and that had me completely shocked.
“What……” I mumbled, tongue-tied because she has caught me off guard.
Sloane had been acting a bit different lately. We were both acting different around each other.
Something I was certain that she had noticed, but would rather chop off her fingers than talk to me about it.
I was about to try to speak to her when she angrily charged out of the room, tears falling down her eyes as she pressed her laptop against her chest.
The bottom line of it all was that I was the bug she needed to get rid of in order to focus.
Fuck my life.
Sloane’s POV
It was crazy how people went from being so jovial to just not giving a shit about even the basic things.
That was me.
I had lost my spark and the little comments that people made hurt me so much.
I found myself doing things that I swore I was never going to do.
I found myself hopping on clothing trends because I wanted to appeal to a certain type of people and I did not want people to call me a Goody-Two-Shoes.
The Los Angeles lifestyle was rubbing off on me. Not even in a good way.
I needed something entirely different. I could not lay a finger on what would do the trick, but it had to be something.
My phone pinged very loudly—adding to the issue on the ground.
I stared at the text, my eyeballs almost falling out of my eyes.
Unknown: Hurry, babes. The clock is ticking and I’m sure you wouldn't want your secret out there.
I read the message over and over again. When my eyes finished scanning all of the documents, a tear dropped from left eye.
Yeah, I was fucked.
Unable to think further, I grabbed my phone and ordered an Uber.
