Chapter 55 — A Tragedy

Dheer's POV:

I went home and took Mitra for a health check-up after informing mom and dad about this good news. The doctor checked her and wrote a few tests.

"Doctor, is anything wrong with Mitra's health?" I asked.

"We need to wait for the reports. We can't say anything now," the doctor said, and she went through all the tests.

We returned home as reports will come tomorrow. I talked to the constables regarding the case of that girl who was murdered in the hostel. The culprit, Anand, was arrested, and tomorrow they will submit him to the court. I looked at Mitra, who is in deep thinking. I went and sat beside her.

"What happened to my darling?" I asked.

She leaned onto my shoulder and held my arm tightly.

"Dheer, that doctor wrote many tests. Does it mean is anything wrong with my health? I want baby and you. I can't leave you both. Will anything happens to me?" Mitra asked, pouting.

"No, sweet heart. Nothing happens to you and our baby. I am there for you always. Now don't worry too much and take rest," I said, making her sleep in my lap.

I patted on Mitra's shoulder slowly to make her sleep. She smiled.

"Sing a lullaby also dear husband," Mitra said, teasing me.

I kissed her forehead.

"Anything for you, baby," I said.

"I love you," Mitra said, holding my other hand tightly.

"I love you. Now don't talk and sleep or I won't allow you sleep for the whole night," I warned her romantically.

She smiled and pouted.

"I know that I am so beautiful. That's why you can't leave me even for a second," Mitra said proudly.

"Don't test my control, baby. It's really tough to control when you are this close to me," I said, smiling.

Mitra closed her eyes and slept in my lap peacefully. I caressed her hair.

I remembered the doctor saying that Mitra's health is not good, and now it's not the right time for her to become a mom. Even the baby is so weak. Mitra doesn't know this, but still, she was worried. However, the reports are yet to come. I hope there would be no complications in her pregnancy. Mitra is thrilled after knowing that she is pregnant. She can't bear if she comes to know about her health complications. I kissed her forehead once again, and by that time, she slept happily. I kept her head on the pillow and laid beside her pulling her closer to me.

I didn't sleep the whole night as I feel something wrong. I hope nothing happens to my Mitra. I am more worried about my Mitra than a baby. We can adopt a baby if anything goes wrong, but what matters the most to me is Mitra's life.

In the morning, Mitra woke up and got ready.

"Mitra, don't go to office today," I said to her.

"Why? Did something happen? Are we going somewhere?" She asked me.

"Nothing like that. I think these days you are becoming too tired. So, as got conceived, take rest for a few days," I said.

"Ok. But, today I will go to office and will take leave from tomorrow till you feel I am ok and permits me to go to office. Is it ok, DCP sir?" Mitra said mocking a kid with her sweet smile.

I hope that smile stays forever on her face.

"Ok, sweet heart. I will pick you in the evening, or will send the car. You don't come alone. Mostly I will try to pick you," I said, pecking on her cheek.

"Okay. Now first drop me at the office," Mitra said, hurrying and taking her handbag.

"Mitra, are you going on any mission?"

"Why did you get that doubt?"

"Because you woke up soon today and got ready before me. From the morning, you are thinking deeply. So, I got a doubt. Please Mitra, don't go," I said, holding her wrist.

"Till now you never ordered me anything regarding my job and never interfered in my profession," she asked suspiciously.

"Even now I am not ordering you, just requesting you," I said, cupping her face.

"I need to go. This is the last mission. Until my delivery I won't take up any mission again, please," Mitra said.

I don't want her to go. But I couldn't stop her because it's her profession, and I have no right to interfere.

"Ok fine, but take care. I love you and our baby," I said, and she smiled.

She pecked my lips, and I dropped her at the office.

"Call me if necessary. However I know you are capable of handling anything," I said to Mitra.

I went to the office. For the first time, I am unable to focus on my work. Why am I thinking a lot about Mitra today? Am I worried about her health condition, or what's bothering me? I got a call from the doctor who tested Mitra yesterday, saying reports came.

I went to the hospital immediately.

"Mr. Dheer, we should thank God. Mitra is weak but the condition of baby and baby growth is absolutely normal. So, no complications in her pregnancy," the doctor said, making me relax and happy.

I went to her office to pick her. But she is not there. I called her, but she didn't receive my call. Maybe she is busy with her mission. I hope she is safe. She loves her profession, and I love her.

I got an idea. Mitra wants me to propose to her. I decided to propose to her today by surprising her. I immediately took my mobile and booked a room in a resort. I went to the resort and supervised the decoration in the way that makes Mitra thrilled. I brought a ring with our marriage photo on it. Whenever she keeps it to her hand, it plays "I LOVE YOU" in my voice. I brought red roses for her. Everything was set, and then I sent a message to her about the resort address. I waited for two hours, but she didn't come yet. She didn't call back or replied to my message. Is she busy with the mission till now?

After half an hour, I got a call.

"Hello, who is this?"

"Sir, is this DCP Dheer?"

"Yes."

"Sir, we are calling from Vedanta hospital. Your wife Mitra was admitted here as she was hit by a car," someone said, shocking me.

I immediately went to the hospital.

"Doctor, I am Dheer, DCP. How is my wife Mitra and her baby?" I asked.

"Though she was hit by a car, nothing happened to baby but..."

"But?" I asked as I didn't understand.

"You go and meet Mitra once," the doctor said, and I went to Mitra.

"Mitra."

She looked at me.

"Who are you?" She asked, mocking a kid.

"Stop it, Mitra, it's not the time to play," I said, holding her hand.

"Who is Mitra?" She asked, blinking her eyes.

"Mitra, please stop it. You have a big surprise awaiting. Come let's go," I said as there is only a small bandage to her head but no other injuries.

She freed her hand from me and moved away from me as if she is scared of me.

"Mitra, what happened to you? Ok fine, I am not angry with you. I think you are doing this drama as you refused to stay at home and met with this accident by going on a mission," I said, sitting beside her and cupping her face.

"Mr. Dheer, Mitra is not acting. In the accident, there is no major injury to her body. We thought it's a small accident but when she came into conscious, she didn't recognize anyone, including her colleagues and your photo too. We did tests on her. She has a blood clot in her brain due to this injury. That's why she lost her mental stability. Now she's mentally like a five-year-old kid," the doctor said, and I looked at her with tears as she is so scared and sat hugging her knees.
