Chapter 53 — Be brave

***Harper***

I close the door behind me, drawing in as much air as I could in one breath. I had to make a huge effort not to show how vulnerable I was feeling in Alex's office. As I walk down the corridor towards my room, I couldn't help but glance at the paintings adorning the walls and the rich wooden furniture that filled the mansion. Normally, these surroundings would have felt like a sanctuary, but tonight they only add to my unease. It was as if Alex's personality was infused into every corner of the house, and the thought of it sent a shiver down my spine.

As I stay outside my room, still reeling from my conversation with Alex, I spot Laurie just ahead, her eyes bright with excitement.

"Welcome home, Harper!" Laurie exclaims, rushing forward to hug me tightly.

My heart melt at her warmth, but I couldn't shake off Alex's strict instructions. He made it clear that he didn't want Laurie and me to grow too close, to maintain a certain distance.

"Laurie, darling," I say, crouching down to her level. "Thank you for the lovely welcome, but remember: I have many things to do, and I can't waste time on trivialities.”

I see a flicker of confusion cross Laurie's face. "But why, Harper? If you married my dad, you are my stepmother and take care of me," Laurie responds between tears.

I sigh inwardly, searching for the right words. How could I explain Alex's reservations to a sweet little girl like Laurie without hurting her feelings?

At my knees to meet Laurie's tear-filled gaze, my heart twist with empathy. "Listen, Laurie," I begin gently, "being a stepmother is a big responsibility, and it's not something that happens overnight. But if you promise to study hard and do well in school, who knows? Maybe one day you'll be my stepdaughter." I forced a smile, hoping to soothe her sadness.

Her tears subsid slightly, replaced by a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "Really?" she asks, her voice trembling with anticipation.

I nod, trying to mask the ache in my chest. "Yes, really. But it'll take time, okay?"

Laurie nod eagerly, a small smile brightening her face. "Okay."

As she scampers off to her room, the weight of my own deception settles heavily on my shoulders. I know I’m only buying time, offering false hope to a sweet, innocent girl. With a heavy sigh, I enter my room, the echo of Laurie's footsteps fading into the distance.

As I find myself alone in the room, the pile of hideous clothes Alex left in my wardrobe serves as a stark reminder of his childishness and cruelty, all wrapped up in one. With a heavy sigh, I reach for my phone and dial my uncle Leonard's number.

"Harper, darling, where are you? I've been trying to reach you all morning," comes Uncle Leonard's concerned voice on the other end.

"I'm sorry, Uncle Leonard. I need some time alone," I reply, trying to sound composed despite the turmoil inside me.

"I've seen the news, Harper. I'm worried sick about you. Are you safe?" Uncle Leonard's voice trembles with concern.

"Yes, I'm fine, Uncle. Alex... he just... he made a mistake," I struggle to find the right words to explain the situation.

"If he's putting you in danger, Harper, I won't stand for it. I'll do whatever it takes to protect you, even if it means losing the company," Uncle Leonard declares firmly.

"No, Uncle Leonard, you can't do that," I interject quickly, my mind racing with conflicting emotions. "I appreciate your concern, but I won't let you sacrifice everything for me. I enter this game, and I intend to win."

There is a brief pause on the other end of the line before Uncle Leonard speaks again, his tone softer this time. "Just promise me you'll be careful, Harper. You mean everything to me."

"I promise, Uncle Leonard, I will be safe. And brave.”

I feel relieved to share the news with my uncle about the financial agreement I made with Alex. But at the same time, I feel a tightness in my chest as I hear the concern in his voice. He questions whether this money is some sort of compensation for not reporting Alex to the authorities, but I prefer not to delve into that detail.

"Uncle Leonard, don't worry about that now. The priority is to ensure everyone's safety," I try to reassure him, although I know my words aren't enough to dispel his concerns.

While still on the phone, my aunt Dorothy takes the device, eager to share news that sends a chill down my spine. "Harper, dear, I need to tell you... When Sarah saw Alex on television, she started crying. Even with everything she's been through, that was the first emotional reaction we've witnessed from her since the accident."

Those words cut straight to my heart. Sarah, even in her catatonic state, is still affected by Alex's presence. It only strengthens my determination to deal with this situation as quickly as possible.

I nod slowly, trying to process Aunt Dorothy's words. "That's wonderful news, Aunt Dorothy. It means that Sarah, the one we knew before the accident, is still in there somewhere. Maybe she can come back to us."

Aunt Dorothy's voice is warm and comforting over the phone. "Yes, dear, that's what we're all hoping for. We'll keep praying for her recovery."

As I hang up the phone, a surge of conflicting emotions washes over me. Relief mixes with sorrow, hope intertwined with fear. I clench my fists, feeling the tension building inside me until it's almost unbearable. Without thinking, I grab the pile of ugly clothes Alex left for me and hurl them across the room, the fabric scattering in all directions.

Breathing heavily, I sink to the floor, my body shaking with sobs. Each tear that falls feels like a release, a tiny crack in the armor I've been wearing to shield myself from the pain. But beneath it all, the uncertainty still gnaws at me, leaving me feeling raw and exposed.

Closing my eyes, I let the tears flow freely, allowing myself to finally confront the whirlwind of emotions that have been swirling inside me since yesterday. It's overwhelming, but somehow, it also feels like a small step forward.
