Chapter 50 — Waking up

***Harper***

My stomach growls. It's what wakes me up; if it hadn't growled, I'm sure I would have slept for a few more good hours. I reach for my phone on the bedside table and see that it's already 3 p.m. I get up with aches all over my body, as I spent many hours on a sofa, without a good position to rest my body, and with some reluctance to fall completely asleep, even though William seemed like a nice guy.

As I rise, the warmth of the room envelops me, the air carrying the scent of aged wood from the antique furniture that adorns the spacious bedroom. The bed, draped in rich, embroidered linens, sits against a backdrop of intricately carved wooden panels. Sunlight filters through heavy curtains, casting a warm glow over the room, enhancing the deep hues of the wooden furnishings.

I pad across the room, my feet sinking into the plush, softness of the ornate carpet that covers the polished hardwood floor. The room is a sanctuary of tranquility, a haven from the chaos outside.

Making my way to the bathroom, I step onto the cool, smooth surface of the porcelain tiles, each one gleaming under the soft glow of the elegant chandelier above. The bathroom is a vision of modern luxury, with sleek marble countertops and gleaming fixtures that complement the classic elegance of the bedroom.

As I indulge in a refreshing cold shower, the water cascading over me, washing away the remnants of sleep and rejuvenating my senses, I can't help but think about Alex. Anger simmers beneath the surface, a constant reminder of his reckless actions and the turmoil he's brought into my life. The porcelain tiles beneath my feet provide a cool contrast to the warmth of the shower, grounding me in the present moment.

After drying myself and my hair, I take a moment to admire the beauty of the bathroom, appreciating the meticulous attention to detail that went into its design. With a sense of renewed energy, albeit still tinged with resentment towards Alex, I return to the bedroom area, ready to start my day.

Walking over to my suitcases, I unzip them and begin to carefully unpack my clothes. Each item carries memories of a life I once knew, a life that feels increasingly distant with each passing day.

As I lay my clothes out on the bed, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness at the thought of leaving behind the familiarity of my old life. But I push the feeling aside, focusing instead on the task at hand. With each garment I fold and place in neat stacks, I feel a sense of accomplishment, a small victory in the face of uncertainty.

Once all my clothes are neatly arranged on the bed, I turn my attention to the spacious wardrobe that stands against the far wall of the room. Made of rich, dark wood, its ornate carvings hint at a bygone era of elegance and opulence.

I take a deep breath as I open the wardrobe doors, expecting to find empty hangers waiting to hold my belongings. However, what I find inside is far from what I anticipated. Instead of an empty space, the wardrobe is filled to the brim with an array of clothes, each more garish than the last.

There are brightly colored blouses with bold patterns, outdated skirts in clashing prints, and dresses that look like they belong in a costume shop rather than a modern wardrobe. As I run my fingers over the fabric, I can't help but cringe at the thought of wearing any of these garments.

And then, tucked among the chaos of clothes, I spot a small piece of paper. It's a note, written in Alex's unmistakable handwriting. "Make good use of them. They're yours," the message reads.

I feel a surge of anger and frustration welling up inside me. How dare he presume to dictate what I should wear? These clothes are not me—they're a cruel reminder of his control over my life.

But as I stand there, staring at the clothes and the note, something shifts inside me. I refuse to let Alex's petty attempt at manipulation get to me. With determination, I begin to remove the clothes from the wardrobe, setting them aside in a pile on the floor.

I may not have chosen these clothes, but I refuse to let them define me. With each garment I discard, I feel a sense of liberation, as if I'm shedding the weight of Alex's expectations and reclaiming control over my own life. And as I stand among the discarded clothes, I know that no matter what challenges lie ahead, I am strong enough to face them on my own terms.

So, I was there in the room, looking at that pile of clothes that, honestly, I don't even know how to describe. And I thought to myself, “Harper, you're a fashion designer. You can turn this into something amazing.” And that's what I did.

I started cutting, sewing, completely changing the appearance of those pieces. It was like I was painting a picture, but with fabric. Every cut, every detail, was a new brushstroke, a new idea forming in my mind.

The hunger started to kick in, but I just couldn't stop. I had a vision in my head, a look I wanted to create, and I wasn't leaving that room until I saw it come to life.

And when I finally finished and went downstairs... well, let's just say I knew I was slaying. Those clothes that were once so dull now had life, personality. It was like I was wearing my own artwork.

And of course, everyone in the house was kind of shocked, right? I may have caused a little stir, but it was worth it. I showed everyone that I'm capable of making my own fashion, following my own style, and I don't need to follow anyone else's rules to do that."

As I descend the stairs, the aroma of home-cooked food envelops me, enticing me towards the kitchen like a siren's song. There, I find Mrs. Doris, the housekeeper, diligently tending to her duties. She turns towards me with a warm smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners in genuine welcome.

"Good afternoon, Miss Harper," she greets me politely, her voice soft and reassuring. "I hope you're feeling rested after your journey."

I return her smile, feeling instantly at ease in her presence. "Thank you, Mrs. Doris. I must say, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. Your reputation precedes you."

Mrs. Doris chuckles softly, a hint of modesty in her demeanor. "Oh, you're too kind, dear. I'm just here to make sure everything runs smoothly around the house."

We engage in light conversation as Mrs. Doris bustles about, setting the table with care and attention to detail. Despite her initial hesitation, I sense a warmth and sincerity in her that draws me in.

As she lays out the meal she has prepared for me, I can't help but admire her culinary skills. The spread is impressive, a testament to her dedication and expertise in the kitchen.

"Please, Miss Harper, you shouldn't have gone to all this trouble," I protest, feeling a pang of guilt at the thought of imposing on her hospitality.

But Mrs. Doris waves off my concerns with a gentle smile. "Nonsense, dear. It's my pleasure to cook for you. Besides, it's not every day that Mr. Montreal gets married, is it? Now you're the lady of this house, which I'm loving. It's nice to have a feminine presence like yours in the home. Mr. Montreal is a good person, but sometimes he has no interest in this house at all.

Her words touch me, and I realize just how lucky I am to have crossed paths with someone as kind-hearted as Mrs. Doris. With a grateful smile, I extend an invitation for her to join me at the table.

"Would you care to join me for lunch, Mrs. Doris?" I ask, hoping she will accept.

At first, she hesitates, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. But then, with a soft sigh, she relents, her expression softening with genuine warmth.

"I suppose I could make an exception this once," she concedes, her tone tinged with amusement.

And so, we sit down together, two strangers brought together by circumstance, sharing a meal that marks the beginning of an unexpected friendship.
