Chapter 268 Chapter 268
Chapter 268 Chapter 268
Hailey's POV.
My eyes were steady on his fingers, however, my ears perked up for a response, a shift in his voice, a stutter. Anything.
How could he be so chill about it?
The room was quiet when I bumped into him and Benita stood behind him, certain that she found the scene a little too confusing.
He rubbed the handkerchief on his hands, getting the deep base of his fingers. He took his time to reply with a dramatic stare. His sleeves were pushed up and a finger of his looked sore red, probably from an intense struggle.
I swallowed softly and thought of walking away. Nobody questions Kai except Damien. He didn't look like he was in a mood to be questioned either.
“Yes, I'm back,” he replied with a deep voice.
I blinked up and hunched my shoulders. “Y… your hands, what happened?” I asked, my expression a mix of curiosity, concern and disappointment.
He didn't answer right away. He scrubbed his hands once more and turned to find a litter box around the corner. Unable to find any, he squeezed the soiled handkerchief into his pocket and dusted his hands. His hands were almost clean except the faint trace of blood under his nails.
“I can see my hands,” he replied, ignoring the last part of my statement.
“Did anything…” I forced myself to a halt and sunk my nails into my thighs. “I couldn't help but notice you are cleaning blood of your hands, and you just got here,”
I couldn't make my statement any milder. I could feel the uneasy stare coming from him, something shifted into a cold grip in his patience. He gave into the temptation, I thought to myself. In my head, I could already piece out that Kai fell into his anger for Vincent instead of obeying the commands of Damien. His pain bore more weight than the orders he was given.
And he had the right to call me a traitor. He just went against Damien's authority. Any actions Afterwards was him trying to get rid of any trace of his action and possibly think of a well received excuse.
After a long, intense stare, he glanced at Benita shooting a subtle sign for her to leave. She hurried out without thinking twice.
“Are you stalking me now?” He asked.
“I. I would never,” I replied.
“So why assume I just got here?” He fired immediately.
“Because I… I haven't seen you around and I have no updates on your assignment,” I stuttered.
“You get updates when it is shared,” he huffed. “Besides, what's there to update you on? I got the job done and left when there was nothing else,”
His voice was flat, no remorse or a flicker of emotion.
“What about Vincent,” I mumbled with desperation.
“What does it matter? I wasn't ordered to keep tabs on him.” He walked away almost immediately into a room to wash off his hands.
I rushed straight to the living room, my eyes circling around the table to find a remote for the television. I found the remote beside a cup of coffee and I rushed towards it. I switched the television on and flipped past a few reality shows until I hit a national news channel.
The reporter had just finished with a business headline. Next was a weather forecast, I could barely wait for them to confirm my fear. I hoped it wasn't true, I hoped his picture was not going to pop out on the side of the television because that would mean more trouble for Damien in about a few months.
“Please, don't be found dead. Please, please,” I fumfered.
A few minutes more, the ticker at the bottom changed “Crook and impersonator with a malicious record of crime Vincent, also known as Vinicius junior caught by the police by a random anonymous tip,”
“Goodness gracious,” I exhaled so loud that I thought it was a buzzer. Kai didn't do anything stupid or selfish.
Relief hit me like a wave ridding me of the lingering memory I had of the mansion. I was relaxed and happy that he obeyed Damien's command.
Then the guilt hit me. He was loyal to the core. No wonder he had a hard time trusting people.
What he meant by getting the job was making sure the police took Vincent into their custody. He didn't think of snooping any further because he wasn't invested anymore, he wanted to stay far away and that was okay.
The hours that followed were long and exhausting until nighttime ushered the stars into the skies. I retired for bed though feeling an awkward chill as I walked into the room and spotted Damien by the corner engrossed in a book. I went to the bathroom to freshen up and when I was done I sat on the edge of the bed and pretended to brush my hair.
The silence made my efforts feel forced, so I slid under the cover and shut my eyes. I guessed the night wasn't going to be like the times I reached for his hands, how I normally press my face into his chest and feel his touches around my sensitive parts.
The sheets rustled and I opened my eyes, his shadow falling on my face as he knelt bare chested on the bed. He yawned for a second and stretched his arms out wide and sat on the bed, his back resting against the crown of the bedframe.
I sat up and gulped silently.
“Are you having any trouble sleeping?” I asked.
“No, I'll sleep when I have to,” he replied flatly.
I moved an inch closer and gaped at the light headlamp beside him. “Maybe if you turn the lights off you can sleep better.”
He didn't answer for a while, and the time he spent in silence made my mouth water, my lips curving into a thin line with an uncontrollable desire for him. I could feel my heart thumping and my stomach pulsing with movement. He glanced at me, his eyes scaling my breast through my nightwear.
I unbuttoned a few to give him a good view. I missed these moments, his touches, I missed him. He grabbed the control of the lampshade and turned them off, then he grabbed me in a hurry in the darkness like a thirsty stranger.
The night wasn't so awkward after an intense hour of bliss and ecstasy. By the next morning, I woke up tired, my legs too sore to walk properly for the first hour.
After a while, I walked out of the room to get us coffee, but I stopped as Sophia stood like a statue right at the entrance, her beauty face mask almost dried on her face and her hair rolled up into colourful curlers.
“I was just about to knock,” she said.
“What are you doing?” I asked with a shock smile, scanning through the split on her pink bathrobe.
“Would you like to go shopping on our first day back here?” She asked. “The house is basically empty and I think we need to go out for something by ourselves. You know, have some fun,”
Shopping? I was ready to do anything that would get us out of our rooms hiding like fugitives.
“I'm down. I'll let Benita know, we need something like this,” I chuckled.
I was about to walk her back to her room, when Damien stopped us with a statement. “I don't think you should be shopping today. At least give it a month,”
“And stay here like test rabbits?” Sophia replied. “Can't we just go out a little. We've been camping in our secret hideout for way too long. We are not criminals anymore, dad,” she begged.
Damien exchanged glances between us, noticing the desperate look in our eyes. We really needed to go out, explore the city like we were tourists even if it was for an hour or so.
“Alright,” he scoffed. “But I'll follow you. And I'll take Marco along. Some twats may try to overstep, you need protection.”
