Chapter Twelve - Sweet treats.

Maya

I am so glad I don’t have work this morning. I am not in the headspace for it after yesterday and Conrad texting me last night. I don’t even know where he got my number from. I didn’t give it to him, and I sure as hell don’t think Meredith gave it to him. I was surprised to hear from him. I thought he would be done with me once he knew the truth. He probably is, but he wants to tell me to my face rather than on the phone.

I felt horrible for ignoring his last text, but I wasn’t sure what to say to him. Plus, it is better he forgets about me, like I said. We would not work. Our worlds are too far apart.

I planned on going out today because I needed to pick a few things up, but the second I woke, I knew I wouldn’t be going anywhere. I was exhausted, physically and mentally. I will probably spend most of my day in bed. When I feel like this, all I want to do is sleep. I don’t tend to eat. I may push myself to shower a little later, but that will be it. Thankfully, I have a couple of days to get myself together before work on Monday.

I reach for my cell to turn it back on. I switched it off last night after Conrad’s last text. It’s not like it matters since I have no one who would want to contact me anyway. I give it a minute and I get two texts from Conrad, one he sent last night and one only an hour ago.

I hope you will agree to talk to me, Maya. Goodnight xx

Good morning, Maya xx

I sigh; why can’t he let me be? Though it was sweet, he took the time to say goodnight and good morning to me. It has been a while since I have had those types of texts.

I stare at my screen, deciding whether to text back. I shake my head and toss it aside, pulling the covers over me. I try my best not to cry. I hate I am such an emotional person at times. I close my eyes and hope sleep takes over me, but it doesn’t work. I groan in frustration and sit up, picking up my cell again. I should text him back. He doesn’t deserve me ignoring him. It doesn’t mean I will agree to meet him.

I take a minute to decide what to write.

Good morning. I am sorry I ignored you, but I really think it is best you just forget about me.

I take a deep breath and hit send. I dread what he will text back. He may not text back at all since I ignored him, and I wouldn’t blame him. My cell vibrates, and I expect it to be a text, but I soon realise it is a call. Damn it! I didn’t want him to call. I hesitate but hit the answer button.

“Hi,” I whisper.

“Good morning, Maya.” He replies.

“Um, why are you calling me?”

“Because it is the only way I can get you to talk to me.”

“And what if I didn’t answer?”

I could have ignored his call or hung up.

“I guess I hoped you would, and you did. I am sorry I ran off yesterday. I shouldn’t have done that, but you lied to me, Maya. You could have been honest with me.” he sighs.

“I lied because it was for the best, Conrad.”

“Don’t you think I should have had a say in it?”

“Yes, but you can’t tell me you are still interested after discovering the truth. At the ball, you looked at me a certain way. When you saw me as Maya, the look was different. You felt the connection and the attraction to the person you thought I was, not the person I am.” I answer softly.

I hear him sigh loudly, “They were two completely different situations, Maya.”

“Maybe, but both still were me, and you acted differently towards me at each one. And no, I am not trying to sound like a bitch, I am being honest, Conrad.”

“Maya, any time we have been together in the same room, it has been for a short period of time. You also acted differently around me,” he replies.

“Yes, because you make me nervous.”

“Maya, I am not the kind of person you assume I am. Yes, we come from two different worlds, but none of that matters to me,” he says softly.

“You say that now, Conrad, but trust me, you will soon realise it does matter. I enjoyed our time together at the ball, but it is best it stays as a memory.”

“No. I don’t agree. I think you should meet me so we can talk. I know you felt it, too, Maya. The connection, the chemistry, and the ease we felt around one another.” He states firmly.

“None of those matters, okay? You don’t need someone like me in your life. I told you I was broken, and I meant it. Please, leave me alone, Conrad.” I whimper and hang up.

I couldn’t talk to him for any longer. He calls straight back, but I reject the call. I pull my ass out of bed and head to the bathroom for a shower. I switch it on, strip down and step into it. I close my eyes and allow the warm water to run over my body, relaxing my muscles.

I only stay in it for a short time before drying off and pulling on some clean pjs. I want to crawl back into bed, but I stop myself. I should try to eat something. I look through my cabinets and fridge, but I don’t want anything. I op for a coffee. I can fill myself up with that today. It is better than nothing.

Once I had my coffee, I was ready to go back to my bedroom, but before I could make it, there was a knock at my front. It makes me panic a little because I don’t ever get visitors. I cautiously stroll toward the front door and look through the peephole. The person on the other side looks like a delivery. Maybe it is for a neighbour because I haven’t ordered anything.

I open the door, “Hello.”

“Hello, I have a delivery for Maya?” he smiles.

“Yes, that is me,” I reply, confused.

He hands it to me, says goodbye and disappears. I close and lock the door behind me. I stare down at the box. What the heck is this? I read the box, and it says Dessert delights. It is a cute little bakery not too far from me, but why are they delivering to me? I don’t tend to buy from there often, because they are quite expensive, but they are delicious.

I sit down on the sofa and take the envelope from the top. My name is written on it, but I don’t recognise the handwriting. I open it and take it out.

I know how you like sweet treats. I hope you enjoy these – Conrad x

Wait, what the hell? How does he know where I stay? He must have looked into my file. Is he allowed to do that? I don’t know if I should be freaked out by it. I open the box, and my mouth nearly waters at the sigh. There is a mixture of little desserts inside, some of the same ones from the ball. I feel a smile grow on my lips. I do have to say, this was very sweet of him.

They look tempting, but with how I feel today, I worry if I eat one, it will make me sick. I can keep them for later or tomorrow. I close the box and put them into the kitchen out of the way.

I stop in at my bedroom for my cell.

Thank you for the sweet treats. It was nice of you, but you shouldn’t have. How do you know my address and phone number? X

No one has ever bought me a gift like this before. It is a new experience for me. Maybe Conrad has a point; I should at least meet with him. I will take a little time to think about it. As long as he doesn’t show up at my front door before I decide.
