Ninety one
Selene's POV
I reached Carey's bedroom door and knocked, waiting for her to open up. It was the weekend and I didn't need to go to work so I wanted to spend my free time with her. It's been a week since I last saw her since I leave for work very early in the morning and I get back very late. I texted her a few times, but she always seemed stressed, and I was worried, so I decided to come find her early that morning.
She soon opened the door and when she saw me standing there, she leaned on the doorway as she gave me a blank look. "Why are you here?"
I was surprised by her tone but I knew she wasn't usually like that so I didn't take offense and instead invited myself in as usual, sarcastically replying, "Well, I came to pay homage to the little insects in this room."
She didn't give a response and, instead, settled down on the sofa across me, folding her legs. I regarded her from head to toe as she sat down, noting how haggard she looked. She looked really stressed and tired and there were eye bags under her eyes.
I realized that it seemed as though I hadn't seen her in months and how I've been distant since getting my new job.
"Are you alright, Carey?" I asked, pausing to give her a once over. "You look... really stressed."
She gave me a blank look. "Took you long enough to remember I exist."
"What do you mean?" I asked, confused by her words.
"You've been out for a whole week, k owing fully well what happened but didn't bother to come check up on me," she responded.
"I... I've been busy."
"Busy to come check up on me at least once?" She questioned.
I sighed, palming my face, knowing she was right, but it had been really hectic for me, and I was tired.
"I'm sorry. It's just that I have to go to work and when I get back, it's always very late..."
"But you couldn't even drop by once for a whole week? I mean, you knew I was not well so not to even check on my health. It's really wrong."
"I was wrong..." I said to her, raising my hand in surrender. I knew Carey well, she would never get so mad at me and I was indeed wrong.
She sighed, palming her face in frustration and leaned back on the sofa to relax before saying, "I'm not mad at you. I'm just..."
"Did something happen?" I asked and she looked at me, tears welling up in her eyes.
She combed her fingers through her hair in despair and I knew even before she said a word that there was something wrong. I stood up from my seat to settle beside her and looked at her eyes as she clenched her fists.
Eventually, she revealed, "Something is wrong. Everything is wrong, Selene."
