Chapter 82 up

Chapter 82 up
The night after dinner felt longer than it should have.
Adrian returned to the apartment later than usual, the quiet inside greeting him like a space that had been waiting to observe rather than welcome. The lights were dim. The city outside stretched in endless lines of yellow and white through the tall windows.
He loosened his jacket and set his phone on the table.
Selina was already there.
She sat on the couch with a book open in her hands, though Adrian could tell almost immediately that she hadn’t been reading. Her eyes lifted the moment he stepped into the room.
“You’re late,” she said.
Her voice wasn’t accusatory.
That almost made it worse.
“Work ran longer than expected,” Adrian replied.
Selina closed the book and set it on the table beside her.
“Was she there?”
The question arrived so simply that Adrian didn’t react at first.
“Who?”
Selina held his gaze.
“Vanesa.”
Adrian exhaled slowly.
“Yes.”
Selina nodded once.
“I thought so.”
Adrian walked to the kitchen counter and poured himself water. The quiet between them stretched across the room.
“She had a meeting with the strategy team,” he said. “I stayed afterward to review a few things.”
Selina watched him carefully.
“You didn’t mention that earlier.”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
Selina leaned back slightly against the couch.
“That seems to be a recurring theme.”
Adrian turned toward her.
“You’re still thinking about what we talked about tonight.”
Selina let out a soft breath.
“I didn’t stop thinking about it.”
Adrian crossed the room slowly and sat in the chair across from her.
Neither of them spoke for a moment.
The city hummed faintly beyond the glass.
Selina finally said, “When you were sitting across from me tonight, you looked like someone who was trying to solve a problem.”
Adrian frowned slightly.
“I was listening.”
“You were calculating,” she said gently.
Adrian didn’t respond.
Selina tilted her head.
“That’s what you do when things feel unstable. You analyze the structure.”
Adrian gave a quiet, humorless smile.
“That’s not a crime.”
“No,” Selina said softly. “But it’s not the same as being present.”
The words lingered.
Adrian leaned forward slightly.
“I was present.”
Selina studied his face.
“Then answer something honestly.”
“What?”
“When you think about the future right now… who do you see standing beside you?”
Adrian blinked.
The question landed harder than he expected.
“That’s not a fair question,” he said quietly.
Selina nodded slowly.
“I thought you might say that.”
Adrian ran a hand over his jaw.
“Selina, the situation we’re in is complicated. The decisions happening right now affect thousands of people.”
“I know.”
“This isn’t about personal preferences.”
Selina’s expression softened slightly.
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“Maybe,” she said. “But people don’t stop being people just because they’re responsible for systems.”
Adrian didn’t argue.
Selina looked down at her hands.
“I’m not asking you to choose between me and Vanesa.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You said that earlier.”
“Yes.”
She paused.
“But I am asking whether you’ve already chosen something without admitting it to yourself.”
Adrian frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Selina lifted her eyes.
“You trust her instincts in crisis more than anyone else’s.”
“That’s professional trust.”
“You confide in her before anyone else when a strategy shifts.”
“That’s because she’s part of the leadership structure.”
Selina didn’t look convinced.
“And when something shakes you personally?” she asked quietly.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Selina noticed.
“That’s what I thought.”
Adrian exhaled.
“You’re interpreting patterns.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re assuming they mean something they don’t.”
Selina tilted her head slightly.
“Then tell me what they mean.”
Adrian hesitated.
Selina leaned forward.
“Adrian.”
He met her eyes.
“What?”
“Are you still emotionally connected to her in a way you’re not admitting?”
The room fell silent.
Adrian didn’t answer right away.
Not because he didn’t want to—but because the question was layered in a way that made the truth difficult to define.
He finally said, “Vanesa and I share a history that shaped how we work together.”
Selina nodded slowly.
“That’s not the question I asked.”
Adrian’s voice dropped slightly.
“It’s the only honest answer I can give.”
Selina watched him for several seconds.
Then she leaned back again.
“You know what the strange thing is?”
“What?”
“I don’t actually think you’re lying.”
Adrian blinked.
Selina continued quietly.
“I think you believe what you’re saying.”
“And that’s a problem?”
Selina gave a small, sad smile.
“It might be.”
Adrian frowned.
“How?”
“Because sometimes the things we believe about ourselves are the last truths we’re willing to examine.”
Adrian stood and walked to the window.
The city lights reflected faintly in the glass.
Selina watched his back.
“Did you ever love her?” she asked softly.
Adrian’s shoulders stiffened.
“That’s not relevant.”
“It is to me.”
Adrian didn’t turn around.
“Yes,” he said quietly.
Selina’s breath caught slightly, though she had clearly expected the answer.
“And now?” she asked.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly before answering.
“That part of my life is over.”
Selina studied him carefully.
“But the connection isn’t.”
Adrian turned slowly.
“Connections don’t disappear just because circumstances change.”
Selina nodded.
“I know.”
She stood from the couch and walked closer.
“But sometimes they change shape in ways people pretend not to see.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Selina—”
“I’m not angry,” she said quickly.
That surprised him.
“Then what are you?”
Selina thought for a moment.
“Afraid,” she admitted.
Adrian’s expression softened slightly.
“Of what?”
Selina met his eyes.
“That one day you’ll realize the person who understands you best isn’t the person you built a new life with.”
The honesty of it made the room feel smaller.
Adrian stepped closer.
“That’s not happening.”
Selina searched his face.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Selina nodded slowly.
“I want to believe that.”
Adrian reached for her hand.
She didn’t pull away, but she didn’t tighten her grip either.
“Selina,” he said quietly, “you matter to me.”
“I know.”
“Then trust that.”
Selina held his gaze.
“I do trust you.”
Adrian frowned slightly.
“Then what’s the problem?”
Selina exhaled slowly.
“I’m not sure I trust the situation you’re both in.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“What situation?”
Selina’s voice was soft but firm.
“The kind where two people share responsibility for a crisis big enough that everyone else becomes secondary.”
Adrian didn’t respond.
Selina continued.
“I’ve seen it before.”
“Where?”
“In politics. In war zones. In companies on the brink of collapse.”
Adrian tilted his head slightly.
“And what happens?”
Selina answered without hesitation.
“The two people carrying the weight start believing only the other one truly understands the burden.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t mean anything romantic.”
“No,” Selina said. “But it creates a bond that can become stronger than the relationships outside the crisis.”
Adrian looked away briefly.
Selina noticed.
“You see it too,” she said quietly.
Adrian didn’t answer.
Selina stepped back.
“I don’t want to become the person standing outside that bond.”
“You won’t.”
Selina gave him a small smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“I hope you’re right.”
She picked up her book from the table.
“I’m going to bed.”
Adrian watched her.
“Selina.”
She stopped.
“Yes?”
He hesitated.
Then said, “Nothing is changing between us.”
Selina studied him for a moment.
Then she said softly, “That’s what I’m afraid of.”
And with that, she walked toward the bedroom, leaving Adrian alone in the dimly lit living room with the quiet hum of the city and the uncomfortable realization that some fractures didn’t appear suddenly.
They grew slowly.
And once visible, they were almost impossible to ignore.
