Chapter 139
Chapter 139
Daniel asked, "What? You know them?"
Emily said directly, "If I'm right, the woman with William has to be Ms. Roberts."
Daniel's heart jumped. He stood up from his chair without thinking, his face full of shock. "Wait, what? Ms. Roberts?"
Emily said, "Yes. Ms. Roberts came to our place last night to treat the kids, and she decided to stay for a while so she could keep an eye on them. When I came home for lunch, William was already talking about buying Ms. Roberts a car so she'd have an easier time getting around."
Beads of sweat formed on Daniel's forehead. He knew Bronte well — she had a reputation in the Taylor family for never letting anything go once she felt she was in the right. If she decided Delilah was some mistress William had brought in, she'd tear into Delilah without holding back.
That thought hit him hard, and he quickly said, "Emily, why didn't you say something sooner? Ms. Roberts is an Enforcer from Bloody Prison — she can't just be staying at your place. And buying her a car? You shouldn't be spending your own money on that. We've got plenty of cars just sitting in the Taylor family garage. If you think those aren't good enough, I'll give her one of mine."
Daniel knew exactly how capable Delilah was. He'd assumed that after Albert arranged for her to treat the kids, she'd leave once the job was done. Nobody expected her to stay. The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. If Bronte kept making a scene and actually managed to set Delilah off, the Taylor family could be facing a disaster all over again.
Before Emily could say anything, he kept going. "Forget all that for now. Bronte and Layla have already cornered Ms. Roberts and William at the dealership. You know how Bronte is — she's got a sharp tongue, and if she offends Ms. Roberts, we're going to have a serious problem on our hands."
Emily could hear the tension in his voice and tried to calm him down. "Don't panic. I'll call William right now and have him smooth things over with Ms. Roberts. I don't think it'll turn into anything too bad."
Daniel had no idea how much respect Delilah had for William. When he heard Emily suggest using William as a peacemaker, he snapped back, "Emily, have you been stuck at home so long that your brain stopped working? Who is Ms. Roberts? And who does William think he is? You want him to go calm her down? Are you serious? And Bronte — she must be blind. Calling the respected Ms. Roberts some side piece that a useless man like William dug up? What is wrong with her?"
Emily was at a loss. She quietly said, "Dad, about this whole thing—"
Daniel cut her off. "Leave it. I'll handle it."
He hung up.
Emily still felt uneasy, so she called William. Once she confirmed he was with Delilah, she spoke quietly. "William, you know I just started as president of the company, so please think before you act. Don't fly off the handle like you used to and start throwing punches over everything, okay?"
William smiled, not wanting her to worry. "Don't worry. I know how to handle this."
While Emily was still on the phone with William, Daniel was already heading out of his office, calling Aiden at the same time.
"Dad, there's something I wasn't going to tell you, but I have to now."
He laid everything out — how Delilah had stayed at Emily's place to treat the kids, how William had taken her to the dealership to buy a car, and how Bronte had gone after her with insults.
After hearing all of it, Aiden couldn't make sense of why Delilah would be staying at Emily's to treat the children, but he also knew this wasn't the time to get caught up in that. He drew in a sharp breath. "Call Bronte right now and tell her to stop making a scene. And find out which dealership — I'm going there myself."
Daniel answered, "Dad, don't rush. I'm already on my way."
Less than twenty minutes later, Daniel arrived first.
The moment he got out of the car, he was wiping the sweat off his forehead as he hurried inside.
As soon as he walked in, he saw the sales staff all gathered near the lounge door. He put on a smile and called out, "Ms. Roberts, I'm so sorry for being late. I came as fast as I could."
Layla and Bronte both turned around at the sound of his voice.
Daniel had barely reached the lounge doorway when Bronte put one hand on her hip, jabbed a finger toward William's face, and started in. "Daniel, look at this — this is the son-in-law you and your wife hand-picked for Emily. And another thing, Emily—"
Daniel's brow furrowed tight. He shot Bronte a hard look and snapped, "Shut your mouth. Nobody cares if you pull this at home, but you're out here embarrassing the entire Taylor family."
Bronte looked genuinely stunned. "Daniel, what are you saying? You're calling me the problem? Your daughter just became president and she's already stealing from the company—"
Before she could finish, another familiar voice came from outside the door. "Who's stealing from the company?"
It was Aiden.
Bronte felt a surge of relief. Daniel had already made it clear he wasn't going to take her side. But Aiden was different — she was sure that if she told him everything, he'd see the truth and back her up.
"Dad, you have to stand up for me. Emily, that woman, on her very first day as president, embezzled nearly three million dollars from the company to come buy a car for that useless William. And fine, if all three cars were for William and Emily, I could swallow that — she's the president now, after all. But one of those three cars? William bought it for this woman right here. You have to—"
Before Bronte could finish, Aiden looked down at her kneeling at his feet, raised his hand, and slapped her hard across the face. That wasn't enough — he drew back his foot and kicked her to the ground.
"Shut up. You're a Taylor family daughter-in-law. Where are your manners?"
