Chapter 23 Gathering Storm
Chapter 23 Gathering Storm
The house had become a pressure chamber. Every creak of the floorboards felt like a warning, every glance between family members carried the weight of things unsaid.
Mom had barely spoken since showing me Humphrey's hidden proof of the abuse, those photos, the tapes, the letters confessing his "discipline" in his own handwriting. She moved through the days like someone in shock, cooking meals no one ate, cleaning rooms that didn't need it. I could see the toll: her hands shook when she poured coffee, her eyes darted to the urn on the mantel as if Humphrey might sit up and start yelling again.
The pregnancies were impossible to ignore now. Ruby's belly had grown round and prominent; she wore loose cardigans and maternity tops when she came over, but the swell was obvious, she couldn't hide anymore.
Susan and Lilly were the same, five, maybe six months along, walking slower, hands resting protectively on their stomachs. They rarely spoke to me anymore. When they did, their eyes were cold, accusing. "Are you still seeing her?" Susan had asked last time she was over, voice low so Mom wouldn't hear. I didn't answer, she didn't need me to.
Texts and calls started piling up, each one tightening the noose.
First was from Susan, two days after Mom showed me the abuse evidence:
We need to talk, all of us,and no more pretending.
I stared at the message, and didn't reply. What could I say? "Sorry I knew about your grandpa abusing you and did nothing"? Or "Sorry I'm fucking your mom"?
Lilly followed an hour later:
Mom's acting weird, crying in the bathroom. You know why?
Again, no answer. Paranoia had me checking the phone every minute, waiting for the next bomb.
Ruby's messages were softer, but no less dangerous:
I'm Missing you,Belly's bigger today. The baby kicked hard this morning.
Then: We can't keep hiding this. The girls are asking questions.
I typed back once: Soon. Deleted it. Typed again: I can't. Sent nothing.
Robbinson called that evening. I let it go to voicemail. His voice on the recording was calm, almost gentle:
"Richy. We need to meet. Family stuff, call me back.but i didn't.
Mom broke the silence the next morning over coffee. She looked like she hadn't slept. Dark circles under her eyes, hair unbrushed.
"I'm calling a meeting," she said. "Tonight, everyone. Here."
I froze. What kind of meeting?
The kind where we stop lying,She set her mug down hard. I can't keep this inside anymore. The abuse. Susan being mine. Humphrey's secrets,It's all coming out."
My throat closed. They'll destroy us.
"They already are." Her voice cracked. "The cycle... it's killing us,we have to face it."
I wanted to argue,to run. But the weight of everything, guilt, obsession, fear, pressed down too hard. I nodded.
She sent the group text at noon:
Emergency family meeting. Tonight, 7 pm. at my house. Everyone must come,no excuses. Important.
Responses came fast.
Susan: Fine. But no more bullshit.
Lilly: I'm coming. But don't expect me to be nice.
Robbinson: I'll be there.
Ruby: Of course. See you then.
I stared at my phone, heart hammering. This was it. The fake emergency,Mom's way of forcing the confrontation,no more hiding,no more secret meets. The pregnancies advanced every day, bellies growing, babies getting closer and time running out.
The afternoon crawled. I paced the house. I tried to work, but I couldn't focus, and texts kept coming.
Ruby private: We need to talk before tonight. I don't know what Annie's planning.
Me: I do. Everything.
Ruby: Then we face it together.
Me: Or apart.
I deleted the thread. Again.
Susan: Are you gonna show up tonight or run like always? but didn't answer.
Lilly: Mom's been crying. If this is about you and her, I swear...
Paranoia peaked. What if they already knew? What if Mom had told them? What if Robbinson had?
By 6:45, the house filled. Mom set out coffee and cookies no one touched. The living room felt too small, couch, armchairs. Kitchen chairs dragged in. Everyone arrived tense.
Susan and Lilly first, with Bellies leading in hard faces. They sat on the couch, arms crossed and didn't look at me.
Robbinson next, took off his Suit jacket, loosened his tie and He nodded at Mom, sat in Humphrey's old recliner, claimed it without thinking.
Ruby last, and coat off. Belly unmistakable now. She sat beside me on the loveseat, close enough our thighs touched,I felt her tremble.
Mom stood in the center, hands clasped. Voice steady but thin.
"Thank you for coming. I know it's hard. But we can't keep pretending,Humphrey's gone, but his damage isn't. and neither is ours."
She took a breath. "I have proof. Of what he did to Susan and Lilly,Photos,Recordings, Letters. It's bad and worse than we thought."
Susan stiffened. Lilly's face paled.
"But there's more," Mom continued. "Susan... you're my daughter, from Robinson.Ruby isn't your mom
The room exploded.Susan stood. "What?"
Lilly: "You're lying."
Mom shook her head, and handed Susan the DNA report. "It's true."
Susan read, collapsed back, with tears instantly.
Robbinson stared,face ashen. "Annie..."
Ruby's hand found mine under the cushion. Squeezed hard.
Tensions boiled,Shouts,cries,and Accusations.
The storm had gathered, and it was breaking.
