Chapter 21 The Abuse Revelation

Chapter 21 The Abuse Revelation
The house had turned into a silent war zone, every corner holding echoes of secrets that refused to stay buried. Humphrey's urn on the mantel seemed to watch us, his ashes a constant reminder that death didn't erase the damage he'd left behind. I'd taken to avoiding the living room, where the stain on the rug from his collapse had faded but not disappeared.

Mom spent her days cleaning obsessively, scrubbing counters, washing windows,as if she could wipe away the family's stains too. But her eyes were haunted, the weight of the DNA report about Susan being her daughter hanging over her like a storm cloud. She hadn't told the girls yet. "Not ready," she'd say. I didn't push. I wasn't ready either.

That Wednesday evening, I found her in the study. The room was mostly cleared now, boxes sealed and labeled for donation, the air still thick with dust and the faint scent of his cologne. She sat at his desk, a small metal lockbox open in front of her. Her face was pale, eyes red from crying, hands trembling as she held a photo.

"Richy," she said when she saw me in the doorway. Voice barely above a whisper. "Come in. Close the door."

I did. Sat in the old armchair across from her. My heart is already picking up speed. "What's that?"

"I Found it this morning, tucked in the back of the safe, behind some old bonds. She slid the photo across, and faded color print. it was Susan, young, maybe nine or ten, smiling for the camera, but her eyes were wrong, scared, and her arm... bruises. Dark purple fingerprints gripping like a vise.

My stomach twisted. "He... hit her?"

Mom nodded. Slow. Pain etching deeper lines on her face. And Lilly, not just once, but for years. The box has more. Photos he took, maybe to remind himself, or control them, notes too,and letters he wrote but never sent, like confessions to himself. And this." She picked up a small digital recorder from the box,and pressed play.

Humphrey's voice filled the room. Gruff, low and menacing. "You think you're special, Lilly? Talking back like that? You're nothing without me. I own you. Don't forget it." Background, sobbing. A young girl's voice. Lilly's. "Please, Grandpa. I'm sorry. It hurts." A slap sound. Sharp. Flesh on flesh. More crying. "That's for your own good. Toughen you up."

Mom stopped it. Her finger was shaking on the button,so I set the photo down. Hands numb. "How... How long?"

"From the dates on the notes... started when they were seven or eight. Emotional first, belittling them, calling them worthless, stupid, mistakes. Controlling every little thing. What they wore. Who they talked to,made them feel like they deserved the punishment.

Then physically, grabs the left bruises, slaps when they 'misbehaved.' He twisted their rebellion, pushed them so hard they'd act out, sneak off, talk back, then he'd use it as an excuse to 'discipline' them more. Victimhood turning to vengeance. They'd fight back in small ways, rebellious streaks, and he'd crush it harder. Cycle feeding itself."

Emotional trauma slammed into me like a freight train. The girls,Susan and Lilly, the "rebellious" ones with daddy issues. But this? Humphrey breaking them down systematically. Emotional abuse carving scars no one saw, physical ones hidden under sleeves, twisting their spirits into something darker, their rebellion a cry for help disguised as defiance. And now, their pregnancies,by him,is a horrific endpoint, not just depravity, but a multi-generational curse.

"Why keep this?" I asked. Voice rough. Throat tight.

Mom shrugged. Tears slipping down her cheeks. "Guilt? Or proof if they ever turned on him? The notes read like a diary, admitting he knew it was wrong but couldn't stop. 'They need to learn,' he'd write. 'Like I learned from my father.' See? Multi-generational. His dad was hard on him, from what he told me once. Beat him, belittled him.

Humphrey passed it down to the girls, and us... the affairs, the lies... it's all part of it. Trauma masquerading as love. Protection, but it's poison, Rotting the roots."

I stood. Paced the small room, steps heavy on the creaky floor, unpacked it in my head. Mom's affair with Robbinson, born from her own loneliness, maybe from her upbringing, though she never talked about it.

The lie about Susan, planting seeds of resentment in Humphrey. He sensed something off, taking it out on the girls,Susan especially, the child he knew deep down wasn't his, pushing them, breaking them, twisting their rebellion into self-destruction that fed his control. Them acting out, daddy issues manifesting as vengeance, the cycle spinning faster. And me... with Ruby. The baby, and repeating the pattern in my own way. Lust as escape, Guilt as chain,Multi-generational trauma unpacked, layer by layer. The family was not dysfunctional by accident,By design, passed down like a bad gene.

"We have to tell them," Mom said. wiping her face with a tissue. "Show them this, let them know it wasn't their fault, and break the cycle before it claims the babies too."

The thought terrified me. Exposed. The family cycle laid bare.Susan and Lilly, victims turned survivors, facing this. Their pregnancies were darker now, having babies from abuse, from a man who wasn't even their grandfather for Susan.

I nodded, and left the room. I needed air. I stepped onto the back porch, stared at the yard where we'd played as kids, tag, hide-and-seek. Innocent once. Now tainted by the truth. Emotional scars opening wide. Trauma unpacked. The cycle exposed.

No turning back.
