CH 75 - The Last Legacy

The old house where Lucien was hiding looked small, swallowed by choking fog. Night hadn’t turned to morning. The world no longer spun the way it should. The sun hadn’t returned since Evelyn cloaked it with her dark ritual. And now… Umbra, the entity from the "Reverse Side of the World," was nearly upon their final line of defense.
The mist was like a wall. no birdsong, no ticking clock. The world paused between a heartbeat and a held breath. Lucien stood tall in the center of the old house, the place where Elara was hidden away, preparing to face a being that couldn’t be killed only delayed.
Elara was upstairs, protected by an ancient seal that now trembled like a failing heartbeat. In the center of the room, Lucien gripped a small, glowing blue gemstone, the Aurelion relic, a sacred heirloom from the oldest line of vampire guardians, the last of its kind. The gem pulsed in his hand, not just a stone, but a vessel of ancestral spirit, a sacred force that preserved the balance of the pureblood line.
And now… he had to sacrifice it.
“Forgive me,” Lucien whispered. “If this is the only way… I won’t let Umbra touch Elara.”
He raised the gem toward the center of the sacrifice circle.
CRAAACK!
Suddenly, the air rippled. A new presence surged behind him. The wind split, and in a flash of crimson-silver light, Daeron Regane appeared, breaking through the crumbling rooftop. Without a word, he cast a wind-seal around the house, reinforcing the crumbling barrier.
“Don’t do it,” Daeron’s voice was low, but firm.
Lucien turned, eyes wide. “Uncle?”
“I had a feeling,” Daeron said as he stepped forward, his long cloak rippling with the magic that wrapped around him. “A pull that told me to come… just as you were about to do something reckless.”
Lucien looked down at the gem in his hand.
“It’s the last shield we’ve got. If Umbra breaks through,"
“Then I’ll hold him back,” Daeron interrupted. “But you can’t destroy that relic. Without it, we won’t be able to reseal Umbra. We’d lose the only key left to maintain balance.”
The air grew dense. Umbra’s tall, nightmarish silhouette started to emerge from the fog that seeped into the very bones of the house. Outside, he was close. His mist slipped through cracks in the windows. Burning red eyes blinked in the dark. The atmosphere shivered like reality itself was being pulled off its axis.
“You won’t be strong enough alone,” Lucien said.
Daeron glanced toward the door, which now shuddered under pressure. Bloody sigils carved into the wood began to glow a soft blue. He raised his hand, revealing the Regane sigil pulsing on the back of his palm.
“I’m not alone. The strength of the entire Regane bloodline stands with me.”
Outside, the fog let out a sound like a scream, a wail that didn’t belong to any living creature. Umbra was testing Lucien’s spiritual barrier. And then the fight broke out.
Lucien lashed out with blood-magic, summoning shadow shards that lashed and tore at Umbra’s form like extensions of himself. Daeron conjured walls of raw energy to restrain the mist, trying to block it from entering through every crack. But every attack only slowed Umbra down, none of it could stop him completely.
Upstairs, Elara screamed. The sound cut through the air like a blade. Umbra reacted instantly, twisting toward the voice like an animal sensing prey. Lucien redirected his magic, forming a circular barrier around the stairs. Daeron stumbled back a few steps, sweat dripping down his face, his strength beginning to falter.
Meanwhile, in the shadows… Evelyn disappear.
She stood out of sight, hidden behind an old tree just a few meters from the house. Her eyes narrowed, watching the fog grow thicker, wilder.
“Damn it,” she muttered. “I didn’t expect something like that will appear.”
Instead of stepping in to help, she turned on her heel and backed away. Evelyn knew when to retreat. This wasn’t the time for heroics not for Elara, not for Lucien… and definitely not for the world.
Back inside the house, Daeron stood firmly at the door, both hands raised, forming a shimmering silver magic circle. The vibrations in the air grew stronger, and in a split second Umbra touched his barrier.
The entire floor shook violently.
“Protect Elara!” Daeron shouted. “Don’t let the mist touch her not even her shadow!”
Lucien bolted up the stairs, tucking the Aurelion gem into a double-layered protection spell, then glanced back down. Daeron stood unmoving, his body now glowing faintly with the strain of forced magic.
“How long can you hold him?” Lucien called from the staircase.
Daeron grinned. “Long enough for you to come up with a better plan than breaking that stone.”
Suddenly, cracks of light split across the ceiling. Umbra had begun forming a massive arm from the mist, reaching for the roof.
BOOOM!
An explosion of energy erupted from Daeron’s body. The fog screamed, and Umbra’s form staggered back but only for a moment. It was like a pause between waves in a hurricane.
And just then… far away, Elara began hearing whispers in her mind. A voice soft, invasive.
“You are the key… Open the way… I can give you peace. Power… or the end.”
Her eyes snapped open, wide with fear. “Lucien…” she whispered.
Lucien turned sharply. “Elara?”
But before he could ask more, the glow of Daeron’s seal started to flicker… dimming. And for the first time, Umbra’s form reached the threshold.
“He’s stronger than the last time I saw him,” Daeron hissed.
“Because he wasn’t meant to be awakened,” Lucien replied. “And Evelyn was too damn reckless to see that.”
The fog thickened. Umbra’s silhouette expanded towering, almost taller than the house. The sky darkened as though it might collapse. Then… from somewhere distant, a soft voice rang out:
“It’s been 24 hours.”
And from the eastern horizon, a beam of light broke through. The sun faint and struggling, but strong enough to touch Umbra’s shadow. Umbra screamed.
The sound shook the earth. The fog thinned. His body wavered, trembling like smoke caught in a storm. Slowly, he began to retreat not vanishing completely, but clearly weakened.
Lucien stood frozen. Daeron let out a deep breath, his body shaking with exhaustion.
“The light pierced the dark,” Lucien whispered. “Finally…”
But even as sunlight spread through the land, Umbra didn’t vanish. He slipped into the cracks of shadow, into the roots of the earth, hiding his rage. Lucien looked at the gem in his hand, then up at the sky.
“The sun is back. But night will fall again.”
Daeron watched the remnants of the mist that hadn’t fully cleared. “And when it does… we’ll need to be more than ready. He’ll return hungrier than ever. Prepare yourself, Aurelion.”
