Chapter 9
Today was an exciting day for the school. It was the annual sports competition, and preparations were in full swing. I overheard Miss Daniella telling the sports teacher that many alumni would be present. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of participating in sports. I really wanted to be part of the cheerleading crew, but Isabella was their leader. It wouldn't be much fun, so I decided to sit in the crowd and watch.
I woke up early and wasn't in the mood to drive today, so I tagged along in Miles' car. I was going to be a passenger princess today. Miles was early because he was the captain of the final year basketball team. I really loved basketball, but there was no girls' team in this school. "You're quite eager for school today," Miles said with a smirk, and I giggled. "You're no fun. I just want to sit in front so I can get a good view. You know my height," I said with a shrug.
"Why didn't you join the cheerleading crew?" he asked, curiosity in his eyes. I had been part of the cheerleading crew in middle school. I knew that's why he asked, but I wasn't in the mood to explain. If I said I hated Isabella, he'd probably say it's because I'm a pain in the ass.
"Okay, fine. If you don't want to say, buckle your seatbelt. You're in for the ride of your life," I giggled and looked out the window. We had been driving for a while when my phone started ringing nonstop. I reached into my bag and checked the caller ID—it was Alicia.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked, not liking the fact that she was calling so early. It meant something was wrong. "It's nothing major. Can you buy some sanitary products for me on your way? I'm stuck in the restroom. And if you can find another pair of black shorts that resemble the school's uniform, I'd appreciate it," Alicia replied.
"Well, if that's all, you don't have a problem. But I might be a bit late if you don't mind." It took her a while to reply. "I don't mind at all." I hung up and turned to Miles.
"Who was that, by the way?" Miles asked. "It's Alicia, my friend from class. I don't think you know her. She needs some help. Could you stop by the pharmacy so I can buy some things for her? Later, we can go to the mall to get shorts for her," I answered, and he looked confused. "Is she sick or something?" Miles asked, and I was getting annoyed. "Girl stuff. Just drive, Miles. We don't want to be late. It's better if you focus on driving." Miles chuckled, and I took that as a yes.
A few minutes later, we had purchased the necessary items Alicia needed. I didn't want to carry a plastic bag, so I placed everything in my school bag. Once we arrived at school, I wished Miles good luck and hurried inside, heading toward the female restroom. "Alicia, are you in there?" I called out, and I heard her voice from a distant stall.
"It's me, Millie. I got you the items. Can you open the door?" With a click, the door opened, and I handed the items to her. "You're a real lifesaver, Millie. Thank you so much," she said with a smile. "Don't mention it. Just change before we're late. I don't want to miss anything." She giggled and closed the door.
"You finally emerged. I was starting to think you'd fainted," I whispered, half-yelling, when Alicia came out with a smile. "Did I really take that long?" She asked, sarcasm in her tone. "I thought this would be too big, but it fits perfectly," I said, changing the subject and pointing to the shorts I got for her. "Yeah, thank you, Millie," she replied with a smile. "Seems like if I didn't drag you out today, we'd spend the entire day in the restroom, I guess," Alicia chuckled, and we walked out.
Once we arrived at the venue, the school's stadium was already filling up. I felt a bit disappointed because I knew I wouldn't be able to see much from the back. I spotted Miles in his basketball attire and waved. He stopped his conversation and walked over to Alicia and me.
"Is that your friend who needed help?" Miles asked, and I nodded. Alicia blushed in embarrassment. I needed to break the tension.
"Alicia, this is my older brother Miles. He's the captain of the final year basketball team and also in the arts class. Miles, this is my friend Alicia," I introduced them, and they shook hands.
"I need help, Miles. It looks like we arrived too late, and I can't see anything from here," I said with a pout.
"Don't worry, I had a feeling. I reserved two seats for you in the front row," Miles said. I kissed his cheek, and he jokingly gagged. Whispering a thank you, I laughed as Miles scratched the back of his head and led the way.
The seats Miles reserved for us were the best. I could see everything clearly. "I never knew you had such a charming brother," Alicia whispered.
"You never asked, did you?" I replied with a shrug.
"Does he have a girlfriend?" Alicia looked at me with a confused expression. "Don't let his handsome face deceive you. He might break your heart."
"I was just curious, Millie. I never said I liked him."
"I was just giving you a warning so you don't get hurt."
"Good morning, everyone. Today is an exciting day for the school, and I'm sure you're all aware of that fact. We have invited esteemed guests, parents, and our esteemed alumni to join us in celebrating this day. With that, let the annual sports day begin," Principal Geraldine announced, and the crowd clapped. Next, the cheerleading crew began performing. Isabella was in the front, accompanied by her three friends. They waved their pom-poms and cheered energetically.
Isabella's skirt was too short and revealing, which grossed me out. I wondered why she was leading the crew. The first match was between the first-year and second-year basketball teams. When the announcer called out the first-year team, I wasn't surprised to see Cody wearing the captain's band on his black and red jersey, accompanied by his friends. He looked quite handsome. Wait, did I just say that? Well, he was attractive, but he was also a jerk. The cheerleading ended, and the game began.
I secretly hoped the second-year basketball team would win, but Cody's team was skilled with their shots and dunking. They ended up winning the round with a score of 40-34. The next game followed, pitting the final year basketball team against the alumni. I knew my brother Miles was the captain, and I couldn't help but shout when their team won. People around me gave me annoyed looks, and I sat down, embarrassed. Alicia couldn't help but laugh.
The final round began, with Cody's team facing off against Miles' team. I really wanted my brother's team to win, and they did. When they were announced as the winners, I rushed down from the stands to hug my brother. I was incredibly proud of him. I noticed Cody glaring at me, but I didn't care. Mom and dad joined in the hug, and we celebrated together. The coach looked delighted for them. Luckily, there were no more classes afterward; otherwise, facing my classmates might have been awkward.
"Mom and dad, can you give me a moment to grab my bag from my locker?" I quickly dashed off. After retrieving my bag, I suddenly felt the urge to use the restroom. I hurried into the ladies' room. When I was done, as I was about to exit the hallway, I heard some irritating noises coming from the library. Nobody was supposed to be in the library today due to the event, so who could it be?
"Cody, just like that, oh my god..." I recognized that voice—it was Isabella's. But what were they doing, and why the noise? I should've minded my own business and gone back to my parents, because I didn't like what I saw. They were making out right in front of me. They were so engrossed that they didn't even hear my footsteps or notice my presence. Isabella's skirt was pulled up, and Cody was half-naked, with his shorts hanging midway on his knees. It was disgusting. I tiptoed back into the hallway and pretended I hadn't seen anything. They were just a bunch of naughty popular kids.
"What took you so long, dear?" Dad asked, and I just giggled. I decided to leave early with mom and dad since Miles had to attend a party for their celebration, and I didn't want to be a third wheel. I wished I hadn't seen that and wondered why my brain was picturing it. What had gotten into me? I plugged in my headphones and turned up the music.
Once we got home, I went straight to my room. After dinner, I picked up my storybook and continued reading where I left off. There was no way I was going to reveal this secret. But maybe I could use it against them if they ever tried to mess with me. I should have recorded it for evidence. Now I had no proof of what I saw. No one would believe me if I mentioned it, so I decided to keep quiet and act like nothing had happened.
