Chapter 24: A Mysterious Benefactor (Silas POV)

The cryptic text, "You were there, but you still don't see it," is still on my phone, glowing in the dark as I sit on the loft's mattress. Nico's pacing, quiet since Dante's bombshell about his rigged rise, his face tight with worry. Harper's gone home, leaving us alone, and my head's spinning from the gig, Cole's crash, the panic, that message. I'm rubbing my hands, trying to shake it, when the door knocks, slow and heavy. Nico stops, looks at me. "Who now?" he asks, voice low. I stand, slow, heart thumping, and open it.

A guy's there, tall, slick suit, gray hair slicked back, eyes sharp like he's sizing us up. "Silas Reed?" he says, smooth, stepping in without asking. I nod, cautious. "Yeah," I say, shutting the door. "Who are you?" He smiles, small and tight. "Mercer," he says, simple, looking around the loft. "Heard you've got trouble." Nico steps closer, tense. "How'd you find us?" he asks, sharp. Mercer shrugs, calm. "Word travels," he says. "Scandal, debts, enemies. Loud mess."

I frown, leaning on the wall. "What do you want?" I ask, voice rough. He sits on the chair, slow, like he owns the place. "To help," he says, steady, hands folded. "I fix problems. Yours are big." Nico crosses his arms, fast. "Help how?" he asks, loud. Mercer's eyes flick to him, cool. "Money," he says. "Your debts, gone. That video? Buried. Media shuts up." My stomach twists, this sounds too good, too clean.

"You're Mercer," I say, slow, remembering whispers, big shot in music, TV, makes stars shine or crash. "The guy who cleans up." He nods, small. "That's me," he says, voice smooth. "I've got pull. Blackmailers, reporters, they listen when I talk." Nico's eyes widen, hope flashing, and he steps closer. "You can stop it?" he asks, quiet, voice shaking a little. Mercer smiles again, wider. "Yeah," he says. "All of it. Clean slate."

I shake my head, fast. "What's the catch?" I ask, loud, stepping between him and Nico. "You don't do free." Mercer leans back, calm, eyes on me. "Smart," he says, soft. "There's a price. Always is." Nico grabs my arm, quick. "What price?" he asks, loud, looking at me, then Mercer. The guy's steady, voice low. "A favor," he says. "Later. Something I need done." My chest tightens, vague, dangerous, and I don't like it.

"What kind of favor?" I ask, sharp, staring him down. He shrugs, slow. "Depends," he says. "Could be easy, could be messy. You'll know when I call." Nico's breathing fast, torn, and I see it, he wants this, bad. "This could fix me," he says, quiet, turning to me. "My career, my life." I nod, slow, but my gut's screaming no. "At what cost?" I say, loud. "He's trouble, Nico. You know it."

Mercer watches us, quiet, like he's got all night. "I'm your way out," he says, firm, standing up now. "Debts paid, scandal dead, no more running." Nico paces, fast, hands in his hair. "I need this," he says, loud, stopping to face me. "I'm drowning, Silas. He's a lifeline." I grab his shoulders, steady. "He's a shark," I say, low. "You don't swim with those." He pulls back, eyes wet. "Maybe I do," he says, quiet. "Maybe I have to."

I turn to Mercer, voice hard. "Why us?" I ask, stepping closer. "What's in it for you?" He smirks, small, adjusting his coat. "I like control," he says, simple. "You're useful, messy but useful. I fix you, I own you." My skin crawls, and I feel Cole's ghost, strings pulled, lives wrecked, and I hate it. "We're not pawns," I say, loud, fists clenched. He nods, slow. "You are now," he says, cool. "Unless you're out."

Nico's beside me, torn bad. "Think about it," he says, soft, grabbing my hand. "No more hiding, no more fear." I look at him, see the desperation, his career trashed, his name mud, and this guy's dangling hope. "It's not real," I say, quiet, squeezing his hand. "He's playing us." Mercer steps closer, voice smooth. "Real enough," he says. "Money's wired tomorrow, video's gone by noon. Say yes, it's done."

I pace, fast, head spinning, Cole's crash, Nico's fall, enemies everywhere, and now this. "How do you know them?" I ask, loud, turning back. "The blackmailers?" He shrugs, calm. "I know everyone," he says. "They owe me, or I owe them. Works out." Nico's eyes light up, tempted hard. "You've got that much pull?" he asks, loud. Mercer nods, steady. "More," he says. "Say the word, it's over."

My chest's tight, skepticism fighting Nico's need. "We can't trust him," I say, sharp, looking at Nico. "He's too smooth." Nico shakes his head, fast. "We're out of moves," he says, loud. "This is control, Silas. I want it back." I get it, feel it, his career's his soul, and it's dying. But Mercer's smile, cold and sure, makes me sick. "It's a leash," I say, quiet, staring at him. "Not freedom."

Mercer heads for the door, slow, turning back. "Think fast," he says, firm. "Offer's good till morning." I step up, voice rough. "And if we say no?" I ask, loud. He stops, smirks, eyes dark. "Take my offer, and I'll make your problems disappear," he says, slow, clear. "But if you don't, you might disappear instead." My heart drops, and Nico grabs my arm, tight, as Mercer walks out, door clicking shut, leaving us stuck, his threat hanging heavy.
