Chapter 269 IN THE LIGHT.
Chapter 269 IN THE LIGHT.
FINAL CHAPTER.
\~~~LUCIANO.
By the time we finally returned to our room, I was exhausted. Not physically, but emotionally.
The day had somehow contained an entire lifetime's worth of intense emotions. The vow renewal, Viktor and Alessia showing up, the celebration, the pregnancy announcement, and the constant, crushing realization that this was my life now. Mine. Ours.
I loosened my tie as I walked further into the room, then stopped because Raina was staring at me.
I narrowed my eyes. "What?"
Her smile widened. Nothing good ever followed that smile.
"Nothing."
"Liar."
She gasped dramatically. "Luciano."
"Raina."
"Why are you accusing me?"
"Because I know you."
"That's offensive."
"It isn't."
"It is."
I laughed quietly and finally removed my tie, dropping it onto a nearby chair. The second I did, she moved straight toward me. My eyes followed her suspiciously, "Baby," I said.
"Yes?"
"What are you doing?"
She smiled sweetly, the dangerous kind. "The same thing I've been trying to do for the last hour."
I blinked, then immediately shook my head. "No."
Her smile disappeared. "What do you mean no?"
"I mean no."
She stared at me. I stared back.
"Luciano."
"Raina."
Her eyes narrowed. "You can't be serious."
"I am extremely serious."
"Why?"
I looked at her stomach, then back at her face very slowly. Understanding immediately dawned on her, and then she groaned. "Oh, my God."
"It's not funny."
"It is funny."
"It isn't."
She burst out laughing holding her stomach and everything, meanwhile, I remained completely serious.
"Luciano, the baby is fine."
"You don't know that."
"I do know that."
"You don't."
She laughed harder, and I rubbed a hand over my face. "This is exactly why I signed up for those classes."
"The classes are making you worse."
"The classes are making me informed."
"The classes are making you paranoid."
"They are making me responsible."
She pointed a finger at me. "There."
"Where?"
"That overprotective husband thing."
I frowned. "What”
"The one where you suddenly think you're an expert on everything."
"I am an expert."
"You are not."
"I literally have certificates."
"You have online certificates."
"They still count."
Raina laughed so hard she nearly fell onto the mattress. I immediately stepped forward, my hands extending instinctively. "Careful."
That only made her laugh more. God help me. A few months ago, I had been running a global organization.
Now I spent half my time making sure my wife didn't accidentally trip over air.
"You're impossible," she said.
"And you're reckless."
"I'm pregnant. Not made of glass."
I opened my mouth, then closed it, because that particular argument had already been lost several times over the last week. Raina took advantage of my silence immediately. Before I could even react, she stepped right into my space and wrapped her arms around my neck.
My hands automatically settled on her waist. Her smile softened slightly. "There he is."
I raised an eyebrow. "There who is?"
"My husband."
"I've been here the whole time."
"No." She shook her head. "The man talking to me before was some overprotective stranger."
I snorted, then leaned down and kissed her forehead.
When I pulled back, she was still smiling, still looking at me like I was her favorite person in the world.
The sight hit me harder than it should have because after everything, after all the time, all the mistakes, all the blood, and all the wars, she was still here, still choosing me, still loving me.
Her fingers slid into my hair, and her voice softened. "You know..."
"What?"
"I'm happy."
My chest tightened immediately. "So am I."
"No." She smiled. "I mean really happy."
I looked at her for a moment, then pulled her even closer until there was absolutely no space left between us. "I know."
For a second, neither of us spoke. The room was quiet, peaceful and it was the kind of peace I used to think belonged exclusively to other people. Not me. Never me.
Yet somehow, here I was, holding my wife, thinking about our future, thinking about our child, and thinking about a life that no longer felt impossible.
Raina rested her forehead against mine and smiled. "So..."
I immediately narrowed my eyes. "No."
She burst out laughing, but this time, she didn't step back. Instead, she used her grip on my neck to pull herself upward, shifting her weight until she hoisted herself up.
Before I could protest, she had her legs wrapped around my waist, forcing me to catch her thighs to keep her secure.
"Babe!" I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat. "What are you doing? Get down."
"Make me," she whispered, her eyes dancing with pure mischief as she looked down at me.
"Are you trying to rape me?" I demanded, though my grip on her legs only tightened, holding her perfectly safe against me.
"I'm sure our baby will understand," she shot back, giggling against my mouth.
I tried to keep a stern expression, I really did, but looking at her like this, flush with life, beautiful, and completely fearless completely broke my resolve. "You are completely unhinged," I muttered.
"And you love it."
She leaned down and captured my lips, killing any remaining arguments I had left. The kiss wasn't like the gentle, symbolic one we had shared on the beach. This was heavy, demanding, and filled with a fierce familiarity that always burned through my veins. I walked us backward until the edge of the mattress hit the back of my knees, and we tumbled down together.
I took the brunt of the fall, ensuring her weight landed safely on top of me. I rolled us over instantly, careful to support my own weight on my forearms so I wouldn't press against her stomach.
"See?" she whispered, her breathing already turning shallow as her hands slid under my shirt, trailing fire across my skin.
"You're perfectly capable of being careful."
"If I hurt you, I will never forgive myself," I murmured, my voice dropping into a low, gravelly register.
"You won't hurt me, Lou. Just love me."
That was all the permission I needed. I stripped off my shirt, my gaze never leaving hers as she reached for the zipper of her white dress. I helped her slide the silk fabric down, treating her with a delicate reverence that contrasted sharply with the possessive hunger tearing at my chest. When her skin was finally bare against mine, the mere beauty of her took my breath away.
Every touch from that moment on became a delicate balance of heat and worship. I kissed my way down her jaw, over the column of her throat, and down to the soft swell of her breasts. When my hand slid lower, resting gently over the still-flat surface of her abdomen, a profound wave of emotion hit me. There was life in there. A piece of her and a piece of me.
Raina arched into my touch, her fingers clutching at my shoulders as I moved over her. Our movements became slow, deliberate, and devastatingly intimate. There was no rush, no lingering shadows of the past, and no violence.
Every time she breathed my name against my neck, it felt like an anchor pulling me deeper into a reality I never wanted to escape. We moved together in a rhythm that felt less like a conquest and more like a quiet vow, a deeper extension of the promises we had made on the sand.
_____
I pulled the blankets over us, drawing her against my chest. She rested her head right over my heartbeat, her hand curled into the hair on my chest, her breathing slow and even. I wrapped one arm securely around her shoulders, my other hand resting directly over her stomach, shielding the future we were creating.
For years, I had believed that power was the only thing that could keep a man safe in this world. I had fought, bled, and built a fortress around myself out of fear and ruthlessness.
But looking down at the woman sleeping peacefully in my arms, I realized I had been completely wrong.
Power didn't save me. She did.
She had taken a monster and given him a home.
I closed my eyes, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of her hair, and let the peace finally wash over me entirely.
There were no more threats in our life, at least for now and no more wars left to wage.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't just surviving the dark. I was finally living in the light.
