Chapter 9 - A Dire Wolf's Mate

I was awoken by my Beta, Luke knocking on my door to inform me that a letter had been received by my parents from the witch Rini of the southern coven. I quickly showered and got dressed. I chose black slacks and a white button shirt and black dress shoes. Slicking my hair back, I took one last look in the mirror, and headed to my father's office.

“Good morning father, mother. I hear we received a letter?” I asked, getting straight to the point. My mother smiled in my direction, I always felt a sense of peace when she did that, I knew she was using her magic. Only the moon goddess could grant such gifts to those who deserve them, and for Hope, it was a miracle she got to keep her magic before accepting my father's mark. Hope completed my father. My mother passed away shortly after my birth. My father was heartbroken and was ready to give up, but by the grace of the moon goddess herself, she led him to the human village and met Hope.

“Yes, the witch has requested sanctuary and protection for a rogue and her pups from the Emerald Forest pack. We can't say no because she is asking us to use the favor that we owe her.” My father said as he handed me the letter. I read the letter word for word. When I finished, I looked up at my parents. “What favor could you possibly owe a witch?”

“The kind that saved your life.” Hope answered. “My life? What the hell do you mean by my life?” No one answered me, it wasn't until they could see my anger building up and my eyes shifting from my blueish green to amber, revealing my wolf Leo, who was ready to come out, Hope started to speak up. “When you were five, we were outside enjoying the garden.” she paused before continuing “ I took my eyes off you for a minute, you had gotten into the wolfsbane flowers.” Hope's eyes started to tear up. “We almost lost you, in order to save your life we called on the witch coven to save you by any means necessary. They sent Rini. She was able to extract the poison from your little body. In return, we granted her any request, she only requested that when she needed our help we would grant her her request with no questions asked.” I folded my arms across my chest and breathed a little easier. “I was a child, and I wrecked havoc on you, and I’m sorry for that but why must we give sanctuary to a rogue?” My father walked towards me, placed his hand on my shoulder and spoke in an alpha tone “because, when you promise a favor to anyone you must keep your word, that is what a TRUE alpha does.” His words made me shiver. No one but my father could make me shiver in fear.

Later that evening, I called my gamma Nate to my office. “Of course, alpha, I’ll head over momentarily.” Nate hung up the phone on his end. I’d discuss the letter with him and hopefully have his help. If this rogue needed protection, then so be it, increasing security around the territory would be our first priority. It didn't take long before I heard a knock on my office door. “ Come in,” I said. I watched as Nate entered my office, and sat down across from me. “I want you to pick up this rogue that we will be supposedly hosting for a while. You can make her feel less on edge. She has pups, so help her and let me know if you sense any dangerous intentions. I want to make sure we’re not hosting a trouble maker.”

“Yes alpha anything else?” Nate asked. “Prepare my old villa for her. Make sure it's good enough for her and the kids, and text me when you arrive.”

“Yes sir.” With that, Nate bowed and left. Nate was very trustworthy. His gift of calming was a godsend. If he had any problems, he could shift his aura onto her and put her mind at ease.

When the sun came up the next day, I met Nate downstairs in the foyer. I handed him the address of the Witch and told him to take the black BMW. “Text me, I want to know everything. Understood?”

“Yes alpha.” Nate responded, and with that I watched him drive away. It would be close to night before he would return. I was feeling a bit on edge and impatient. I decided a shower would help me relax. I walked over to the elevator, pressed the button and waited for the door to open. When they did finally open, there stood Olivia, another old childhood friend. She always had the hots for me and yet I never gave her the time of day.

“Why hello Karson. Fancy meeting you here. I was just upstairs knocking on your door, when you didn't answer I figured you'd be around somewhere.” She said flirtatiously.

“Olivia, how many times must I correct you? It's alpha Karson to you, and why were you looking for me?”

“I was hoping I could keep you company. I heard that we are hosting a rogue, and I wanted to help settle your mind,” Olivia said, as she rubbed her hand on my chest. I grabbed her wrists and lightly shoved them off of me. “That is quite enough from you, I told you I’m not interested.” Olivia seemed to be upset. She turned on her heels and walked off. I really didn't need her stress added to the pile I already had, she was upset that I didn't take her as my mate. She had accompanied me to a few different social events and fundraisers and figured somehow that I was planning on making her my luna, ha as if. I made my way to my room and locked the door behind me. I undressed and entered the shower. As the water ran down my body, my wolf Leo surfaced.

Out of all the she-wolves around, Olivia is by far the hottest. Why not make her yours?

Because, unlike you, I’d like to give myself to my mate only

I can't win with you…fine have it your way.

Leo was a scoundrel, he wanted to mate with just about anyone these days. Luckily for me, I wouldn't let him. If he had it his way he probably would have marked Olivia by now and there was no way I wanted her as my luna. Olivia wasn't a nice girl, she made sure that no she-wolf dared look my way, as if she had some claim on me.

When I finished my shower, I quickly dried myself off, picked up my phone and saw a text from Nate:

Hey boss, you won't believe this but your guest of honor is down right HOT. Her name is Rebel. It could be a false name and I'm not about to question her about it, we should be there by no later than 6:30pm- Nate

I scrolled down to find an attachment with his text. I clicked, opened, and waited for the download. My mouth dropped instantly. I’ve never seen a girl so beautiful in my life with her raven black hair, olive skin tone. Wow! I couldn't put my finger on it, there was something about this girl that pulled me to her. I just couldn't figure it out. I’m no expert on names, but her name didn't fit her, she didn't look like a Rebel.

I was standing at the top of the stairs with my parents when Nate pulled up. As Rebel exited the car, I saw her pups close behind her. It was odd the wind picked up a bit and yet I could smell her.

She’s hiding something, Leo growled.

I see that, but as of right now, she’s no threat.

I followed my parents down the stairs as they introduced each other. I couldn't take my eyes off her, there was something about her that was frustrating. " Nate, it's late, why don't you help Rebel and her pups to their new residence get her settled and we can all meet for breakfast in the morning. Ms. Hall, you will find everything you need in your residence if you don't find something you need, just call on Nate." I turned and walked back to the pack house.

The next morning, I headed to the pack training grounds. A good workout was needed to get my mind off of things. I had a good 20 minutes before I had to head to the breakfast room and meet with everyone. I was busy doing my own thing when I felt someone's eyes on me. I scanned the area and didn't see anything until I heard Nate call out “Rebel this way to breakfast. Mr. and Mrs Richmond are waiting with the alpha." That's when I spotted her, her eyes were fixated on me like I was the only one in the training pit, she mumbled something under her breath, before turning and heading up to the house with Nate and her pups.

I entered the house, headed towards the breakfast room, filled my plate and sat down to eat. I could feel her eyes on me. I simply ignored it. After some time, Hope and Rebel took a stroll to the gardens as my father cared for the pups who clearly ate their fill and passed out in his lap. Time went on and the day shifted to the late afternoon. I was sitting in the lounge room with my father and Rebel’s pups when we heard Hope’s screams for help.

Rebel was taken to the pack hospital, whereas I stayed and watched the pups. After a day, the witch Rini had arrived in our territory after hearing what had happened.

Maybe we can get some answers.

Yes this rogue hasn't been here but a few days and is already causing trouble.

I agree

I watched as Rebel ran to the witch and embraced her in a hug. “There there Ruby. It’s OK, I'm here now.” The witch didn't stutter “I’m sorry Ms. Rini, but I thought her name was Rebel?” As soon as the witch took down Ruby’s barrier, I felt Leo surface yet again, and this time we growled together “MATE” . It was then that I understood why I felt such an attraction to her, and why I couldn't sense it till now. Everything made sense after Rini informed us about Ruby. At the end of the day we all retired to our rooms and Ruby retired to her home with Rini in tow. I sat on my bed and began talking to Leo.

Goddess. Her name is Ruby. A perfect name

Our mate is beautiful. I want to mark her now

After everything she’s been through, I think she needs space.

And her pups are ours now too. Leo was wagging his tail happily as he said that

We will protect her and the pups no matter what.

Agreed.
