Chapter 15 Mission Impossible
Anna’s POV
The knock came sharp and controlled.
I opened my eyes slowly, disoriented for a second before memory rushed back.
The knock came again. “I’m coming,” I muttered.
When I opened the door, Eve stood there, composed as ever. In one hand she carried a tray of food. In the other, neatly folded clothes.
“Good morning, ma’am,” she said, stepping inside without waiting for permission.
She placed the tray down and set the clothes carefully on the chair. “Did you sleep well?”
“Surprisingly… yes,” I admitted. And that surprised me more than anything.
Eve gave a knowing look. “It’s a good thing you took my advice and didn’t try escaping again.”
There was something in the way she said it. As if she would have known.
“Eat,” she instructed gently.
“I’m not hungry.”
“You must,” she insisted. “You’ll need your strength.”
I hesitated, then sat down and picked up the fork. As I ate, I felt her eyes on me.
Finally, she spoke. “Have you been in the military before?”
My hand paused mid-air. My pulse spiked.
“Why would you ask that?” I said carefully.
She tilted her head. “The way you walk. The way you sit. Even the way you eat. Controlled. Efficient. And especially the way you tried escaping last night. A common lady wouldn’t attempt that.”
I swallowed slowly.
“Not me,” I said, forcing a small shrug. “My brother was in the military. Before he died. He taught me basic self-defense.”
Eve’s expression softened slightly. “That’s great. It will come in handy in the near future.”
“Hopefully,” I replied. I studied her now. “What about you?”
She didn’t hesitate. “I used to work for a terrorist group before Xavier found me.”
I blinked. “That makes you a killer too,” I said bluntly. “Xavier really knows how to scout for talent.”
Eve didn’t look offended. “I would do anything to survive,” she said simply. “If you were in my position, you would have had no choice but to kill.”
I almost smiled at the irony. “I don’t think so,” I said lightly.
But it was a lie. I had killed several men for my organization. Missions I completed without hesitation.
But here, I had to be fragile, Innocent and vulnerable.
“You wanted to tell me something last night,” I reminded her.
She nodded. “Yes. About Xavier and Lucas.”
My attention sharpened.
“They’re stepbrothers,” she said quietly. “Very few people know that.”
I raised a brow. “Stepbrothers?”
“Yes.”
I leaned back slightly. “And how exactly does that help me?”
Eve’s eyes darkened just a little. “It helps in several ways. First, they both have a habit of taking interest in the same woman.”
My stomach tightened. “And?” I asked.
“And eventually,” she continued calmly, “one of them kills her when he discovers she’s involved with the other.”
The fork slipped slightly in my grip.
“That sounds like a fucked-up family,” I muttered.
Eve gave a faint smile. “They’re wired that way.”
She studied my face carefully. “Has either of them taken interest in you?”
My heart skipped. Lucas had kissed me before, Xavier’s too. The look on their faces.
I forced my face into confusion. “No. None of them.”
Eve held my gaze for a second longer than necessary.
“Then you’re safe,” she said finally. “Because once one of them takes interest in you, the other will want you too.”
A strange thought flickered through my mind, two dangerous men circling the same woman.
I crushed it immediately. This wasn’t fantasy, It was survival.
“What does Xavier plan to do with me?” I asked instead. “He can’t keep me here forever.”
Eve shrugged lightly. “He can keep you as long as he wants. But I doubt he intends to.”
She paused. “How did you cross paths with him anyway?”
“Someone lied about me,” I said carefully. “He believed it. Or pretended to.”
“That’s unfortunate,” Eve replied. “But even if the truth comes out… it won’t change much now.”
I finished eating.
“Shower and get dressed,” Eve said, standing. “Mr. Lucas will be here any minute to pick you.”
My eyes widened. “Why didn’t you say that earlier?”
“Because you wouldn’t have eaten.” She gathered the tray and left swiftly.
The moment the door shut, I moved swiftly.
Not to the shower. I went straight to where I had hidden my phone.
My hands moved quickly as I dialed the same number from last night. My eyes remained fixed on the door.
It rang once. Then— “Anna?”
“Yes. It’s me,” I whispered. “Any update on my extraction?”
A pause. “Like I said, I had to speak with your handler.”
“Do you need a full month to speak to her?” I snapped quietly.
“I already did,” the woman replied evenly. “But you’re not going to like the plan.”
“I don’t care what the plan is,” I hissed. “As long as it gets me out of here.”
Silence. Then— “Exactly. You’re to remain in Xavier’s mansion.”
My heart dropped.
“And join his clan,” she continued. “That’s your new cover.”
My breathing turned shallow. “No. That’s not possible.”
“It’s perfect,” she insisted. “It gives you access to crime lords. Your next assignments will require proximity.”
I ran a hand through my hair, frustration boiling under my skin. “What is my new mission?” I asked through clenched teeth.
A brief pause. “You are to eliminate a powerful Don. Name: Zack Arrow.”
My pulse thudded.
“He’s believed to be a close associate of Xavier Carlos.”
I swallowed. “That’s impossible,” I whispered. “You want me to kill a Don? I’m not equipped for that level.”
“You’re an assassin,” she said coldly. “Find a way to get it done or die in the process.”
My jaw tightened.
