Chapter 45 Unwanted matchmaking
Chapter 45: Unwanted Matchmaking
Mrs. Lawrence’s eyes lit up again. “Look at you three, such good chemistry…”
“Mom, No!” Fab said quickly.
Alex groaned. “I swear if she tries to matchmake again, I’ll run.”
Golden snorted. “She means well.”
Varney, who overheard Alex’s groan, strolled over and teased, “So, Alex… Fab’s not your type?”
Alex shot him a warning glare. “Try me, Varney.”
Varney held up his hands in surrender. “Just asking.”
But his eyes lingered… a moment too long.
Soon it was time for the birthday dance. Fab approached Golden and Alex.
He knew he couldn't ask Alex to dance so he turned to Golden.
“My lady, will you do me the honors of having this dance” he asked with a bow.
“It would be an honor my good sir” she curtseyed and smiled.
They went off to the dance floor and started dancing. Golden was smiling at whatever Fab was whispering into her ears as they danced.
Alex didn't know when Varney got to her side.
“You wanna dance?” he asked taking a sip of his drink.
“You wanna die?” she responded with a smirk. Then turned to a guy standing a bit close to them
“Hey do you want to dance?” she asked with a sweet smile.
The guy stunned by the beautiful lady asking him to dance dropped his glass and they immediately went to the dance floor that already had a couple of people on it.
Alex gave Varney an evil grin and went off with the guy.
Varney smiled slowly as he turned around to talk to someone who had come up to him to talk business.
Soon the music changed and Alex found herself dancing with Fab while Golden was dancing with someone random.
Alex and Fab looked like people who were about to murder each other, but there was something sweet and warm about the exchange.
On a closer look, one could tell that they were close friends who just liked to get on each other's nerves.
The party soon ended and Fabulous was by the door to bid his guests farewell.
He hugged Golden and even Alex who surprisingly didn't protest. Then he thanked Varney for the gift.
He knew it was a prototype from Varney's company and knew it was an exclusive gift, one in the world.
The ride home was quiet until Varney nudged Alex's shoulder.
“So… Mrs. Lawrence thinks you and Fab…”
“Finish that sentence and I will choke you with your tie.”
Golden burst into laughter. Varney only smiled innocently.
Later that night, Golden knocked softly on Varney’s bedroom door.
He was brushing through some company emails but looked up immediately. “Sup?”
Golden stepped inside and sat on his couch. “What do you think about Alex?”
He shrugged casually. “She’s cool. Fun to tease.”
“Varney…”
He sighed. “Look, she’s… good. Loyal. Good for you. So yeah, I like her. Not sure if that’s what you mean, but… she’s good.”
Golden studied him quietly. Her brother was too smart for his own good, sometimes he hid behind playful ambiguity. She didn’t push.
Minutes later, she went to her room and found Alex sprawled on her bed scrolling through photos Fab had sent.
Golden sat beside her. “So, Alex…”
“Hm?”
“What do you think about my brother?”
Alex didn’t even look up. “He’s a billionaire who spends too much money.”
Golden chuckled. “No, I mean…what do you think about him?”
Alex turned and took a sip of her water at the exact wrong moment.
When Golden asked, “How about you date my brother?” Alex spat the water out.
“GOLDEN!” she yelled. “Are you mad?! Don’t joke like that!”
Golden fell back on the bed laughing. “Just asking!”
“Ask again and I’ll suffocate you with a pillow.”
Golden only laughed harder.
The warmth of the moment lingered as they prepared for bed. It had been a long, beautiful night, one filled with glittering halls, pride, subtle tension, and unspoken questions.
Alex turned off her lamp. “Golden?”
“Yes?”
“No matchmaking. Ever.”
“Sure,” Golden lied.
Alex threw a pillow at her.
Golden smiled in the dark.
Maybe healing didn’t come in dramatic waves. Maybe it came in soft nights like this, filled with laughter, teasing, and people who stayed.
Tomorrow, the world would continue turning. Tomorrow, Allan would still be a ghost in the distance.
Tomorrow, life would still be complicated.
But for tonight…Tonight was enough.
Lawrence Estate....Fab had just changed into his sleep wear. He came out and met his mother sitting on chair by his desk, going through the pictures on his computer .
He already felt a headache coming on. He casually dropped on the beanbag by the corner of his room.
“Out with it mum, so we can both get some sleep…its been a long day.”
Mrs Lawrence smiled and faced her son.
“Golden seems like a really lovely girl, and you both have great chemistry.
We belong to the same social class so dating her wo…”
“Stop mum. My answer is No!” Fab interjected before she could finish.
“And Alex? You both seem to hate each other but in a cute way. She brings out the crazy and fun side of you that you like to hide.
And who cares if she's a millionaire? Chinese traditional medicine money is very long and ancient.”
Fab raised his brow in surprise. “You investigated her? Wow mum!”
“Just answer the question Fabulous. What's wrong with Alex?” she said dismissively.
“Well mum. First of all, Golden has someone in her heart so it can't work.
And someone has Alex in their's so it can't work either” Fab tried to explain as he got on the bed prepared to sleep.
Not wanting to give up, Mrs Lawrence probed. “Is the person better than the Lawrence family?”
“Oh trust me…he is.” Fab said with a knowing look. “Please turn off the light on your way out. Love you mum”. He said pulling up his covers and closing his eyes...
