Chapter 10 The new student
Chapter 10: The new student
Ocean-City University School Cafeteria
Golden had thought about skipping school for the entire week, but Sunday morning, she had gotten an email from Professor Rufus about a test on Monday morning.
The email was forwarded to the whole class about the upcoming test. Professor Rufus was their Anatomy lecturer and his classes were usually very boring.
Golden used the entire Sunday preparing for the test. While preparing, another email dropped that set the whole class on an uproar.
Their class schedule had been dropped. They were to have another test in biochemistry and pharmacology on Tuesday. Then on Thursday there was going to be a pop quiz in calculus and on Friday, there was going to be a group presentation in Toxicology.
The class mail stated that the paring was going to be posted on the class noticeboard on Monday after lunch.
Golden wasn't looking forward to the pairing. She worked best alone and that was because no one ever really wanted to be paired with her. Plus their class had an odd number so she was always the odd one out and she was fine with it.
Golden stepped into the cafeteria with her food tray. She chose to have a vegetable salad and a cup of Greek yogurt.
She could feel everyone's glare as she walked into the cafeteria. They were pointing and laughing at her.
She had made sure to put on her headset as soon as she carried her tray, if she couldn't hear them then it wouldn't hurt so much.
She walked to her seat by the far corner and sat down. She brought out her iPad and started scrolling through through her pharmacology notes.
She totally blocked out the noise she was hearing. She couldn't care less about what they were saying. Although it hurt, she wasn't going to break down and cry in front of everyone.
They expected her to do just that but she wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of seeing her tears again.
While Golden was engrossed in her notes, someone came to her table and asked for permission to sit.
"Hi, please is this seat taken?" a very pretty Asian girl asked.
Golden raised her head and was momentarily shocked to see a beautiful girl talking to her. "Why do you want to sit here?" she asked a bit skeptical. No one ever sat with her unless they wanted to prank her or ask for money.
Golden was a bit defensive and eyed the girl in front of her with a little skepticism.
"If there's someone sitting here then I can find another seat. It's just that I enjoy eating my meals by a window. Plus I'm new to OCU and don't know anyone else." the girl responded still standing.
"I'm sorry, please sit. There's no one sitting here. In fact no one ever sits here." Golden said giving an awkward smile.
"Thank you. By the way my name is Alex Chen. I am a transfer student from Bejing City University." Alex said stretching out her hands to Golden.
"Nice to meet you Alex. My name is...
"Golden Nixon..." they both said together.
"How..."Golden asked, her skepticism returning.
Sensing Golden's guards returning, Alex smile and picked up her disposable chopsticks and broke them.
"There's no need to be tensed Golden, I mean no harm. I know you because every professor in med school asked me to look for you when I get here.
Before finalizing my transfer, I have been taking online classes for the past one month and sort of became popular amongst the lecturers.
The only name on every lecturers lip is Golden Nixon. I am told that if I want to catch up, Golden Nixon is the way. So that's how I know who you are."
Golden couldn't help but give a shy smile. "They are just exaggerating, I'm not that great."
"I think you are just being humble. I did a little research of my own and I realized you are on a 5.0 CGPA. If anything, you are rather humble." Alex said as she started to eat her noodles.
While Golden and Alex ate their meal in comfortable silence, Linda, Clara, and Lisa approached their table.
"Eating a plate of salad wouldn't help you burn those fat you know." Linda said with a tone full of mockery and that earned laughter from everyone around her.
Then she turned and faced Alex with a bright smile. "You must be the new transfer student, Alex Chen. My name is Linda Miller and these are my friends. If you don't mind, I will like to invite you to sit with us on the podium. This is the losers corner and not a place for a stunning beauty like yourself."
Linda said giving Golden a very nasty look before turning and smiling to Alex. She snapped her fingers and her girls moved to take Alex's tray and handbag.
"No thanks, I'm good here," Alex said and held her tray before the other girl could touch it.
"This losers corner has the best view in the whole cafeteria. Plus I'm quite a loser myself." Alex said with a very brilliant smile.
Golden almost choked on her salad when she heard Alex call herself a loser.
That was a slap to Linda's face. If someone as stunning as Alex who was way more beautiful that Linda could refer to herself as a loser, then what did that make Linda?
"Are you okay?" Alex asked with concern as she handed Golden her water. "Drink some water, you will feel better."
Linda had never been that embarrassed. She could feel people around trying to stiffle their laughter. While Alex and Golden acted like she didn't exist.
"You will regret this Alex, and I hope you choke on that salad, fatty." With that, she stormed off with her friends.
"Are you okay now, Golden?" Alex asked still concerned.
"I'm fine now, thank you. I will go and get you another bottle of water since I've drank from this one." Golden made to stand up but Alex held her back.
"Hey it's fine. There's still enough left, I will just drink from what's left." Alex said dismissively as she continued eating.
Golden looked at her shocked. "Who are you really?" she asked.
"I told you already, I am Alex Chen, a transfer student from Bejing City University. Did you forget so soon?"
