Chapter 18

Chapter 18
Amelia couldn’t shake off the feeling that Dominic was getting too close. She had to stay away from him, at least for now. He was bound to start asking questions, and she wasn’t ready to give him answers.

As she avoided Dominic’s gaze, Amelia couldn’t help but wonder if she was being paranoid. Maybe Dominic was just being friendly, trying to get to know her better. But Amelia’s instincts told her otherwise. She knew that Dominic was a shrewd businessman, always on the lookout for potential threats. And she was a threat, at least to his business interests.

Meanwhile, Dominic was starting to wonder about Amelia’s behavior. If she wasn’t spying for Frederick, then why was he always onto her? It was as if she was hiding something, but Dominic couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was.

He watched Amelia from across the room, his eyes narrowing as he tried to read her expression. She seemed nervous, fidgety, and Dominic’s instincts told him that something was off.

But what was it? And why did he get the feeling that Amelia was hiding something from him?

As the days went by, Dominic found himself becoming more and more obsessed with uncovering Amelia’s secrets. He started to notice little things about her, the way she avoided eye contact, the way she hesitated before answering his questions.

And then there were the whispers, the rumors that Amelia was somehow connected to Frederick. Dominic didn’t believe it, not at first. But the more he watched Amelia, the more he wondered if there was truth to the rumors.

One thing was for sure: Dominic was determined to get to the bottom of things. He would uncover Amelia’s secrets, no matter what it took.

As he sat at his desk, staring at Amelia’s file, Dominic’s mind was racing with possibilities. What was she hiding? And how far would he have to go to uncover the truth?

Dominic couldn’t understand why Amelia was suddenly ignoring him at work. They had been making great progress on the project, and he had even started to enjoy her company.

But now, it seemed like she was avoiding him at all costs. Dominic’s curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to pay her a visit.

He checked the documents she had submitted when she applied for the job and found her address. Dominic showed up at her doorstep, unannounced.

At first, Amelia was taken aback by his sudden visit. She tried to turn him away, but Dominic’s persistence eventually paid off.

“Amelia, what’s going on?” Dominic asked, his voice firm but gentle. “You’ve been ignoring me at work, and I want to know why.”

Amelia hesitated, then seemed to realize that she was being unreasonable. “I’m sorry, Dominic. I think we should talk.”

She opened the door wider, and Dominic followed her inside. But instead of sitting down, Amelia suggested they take a walk.

As they strolled through the quiet neighborhood streets, Amelia seemed to relax, her shoulders easing as she began to open up.

“Frederick is my ex-husband,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dominic’s eyes widened in surprise. “I had no idea.”

Amelia nodded, her eyes clouding over. “We were married for five years, but he cheated on me with Lyra.”

Dominic’s expression turned grim. “I’m so sorry, Amelia.”

Amelia’s voice cracked as she continued. “I thought I was over him, but seeing him again... it brings up a lot of old feelings.”

Dominic’s heart went out to her. He couldn’t imagine what she must have gone through.

As they walked in silence, Dominic realized that he had misjudged Amelia. She wasn’t just a mysterious and beautiful woman; she was a complex and vulnerable person with a deep history.

And Dominic found himself wanting to know more. He was patient because it looked like compared to before, she was ready to talk to him, share her burdens and tell him everything.

“Frederick is my ex-husband,” Amelia said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dominic’s eyes widened in surprise, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he nodded for her to continue.

“We were married for three years,” Amelia said, her eyes clouding over. “At first, it was okay. He was charming and handsome, and I thought I loved him.”

Dominic listened intently, his expression neutral. He did not want to make her uncomfortable about any of this because he could understand that this was hard for her.

“But as time went on, I realized that I wasn’t allowed to do anything,” Amelia said, her voice growing stronger. “I couldn’t work, I couldn’t have friends, I couldn’t even leave the house without his permission.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he still didn’t say anything.

“I was just a trophy, a possession,” Amelia said, her voice cracking. “And then I found out he was cheating on me.”

Dominic’s expression turned grim, but he still listened silently.

“I confronted him, and he became aggressive,” Amelia said, her eyes flashing with anger. “But I didn’t back down. I stood up for myself, and that’s when he did it to my face.”

Dominic’s eyes widened in shock, but he still didn’t say anything.

“That was the last straw,” Amelia said, her voice firm. “I asked for a divorce, and I got out.”

Dominic nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. “I’m so sorry, Amelia,” he said finally, his voice low and gentle.

Amelia looked up at him, her eyes searching. “Why are you being so kind to me, Dominic?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She needed to ask because he was not like this on the first place and as her boss. She did not expect him to even care to check in on her at all for any reason.

After meeting with Frederick like that, she was sure that Dominic would want her to stay away completely but here he was trying to get to know her. She was far beyond crying about this so she didn’t.

Dominic smiled softly. “Because you deserve it, Amelia,” he said. “You deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. And here I thought you were a spy.”

They both laughed.
