It's been five days since the incident with David and I've been doing everything in my power to avoid Mum. Constant calls from the office made it effortless but I knew it wouldn't last for long. My plans were already forming and soon enough, I'll start seeing the fruits of these five days of labor.
The entrance door burst open and David's mother stood at the doorpost fuming and heaving like a lioness that lost its way.
“What did you do to my son, you bitch!” She yelled as her heavy footfalls rushed up to me. “I need a response!” Her whiney voice clawed at my eardrums again and I winced. I guess my response wasn't very pleasant to her and it took me some time to register why my right cheek hurt and her palm was getting close again.
I stepped back and stifled a laugh as I watched his hand swipe past me. “What did he tell you I did?” I replied, sassily. They all knew that I didn't behave meekly and servantly like Sophia but they'd always think I'll change.
“How dare you ask me that question?” She barked and I swallowed the nasty words building in my throat, that's not a very girly tone, mother-in-law. “A hotel staff found him half dead in the room that both of you frequently make use of and he's unconscious in the hospital.”
“When was that?” I sighed at the confusion on her face. “When was he fucking found?” I snapped and she wore the anger back on her face.
“A few nights ago.”
“I didn't you come then? Is he dead now? Or you've found there's no way out and you decided to get me involved?”
“Are you fucking insane?” She rattled in anger but I acted more furious than she'd ever seen.
“Did you want him to die before I knew he was in the hospital? Huh? Now, you accuse me of doing that to him. Who told you that I'm capable of sending a man like David into a coma? Have you taken a fucking look at me?” I berated in a high-pitched voice pretending to quake with rage. His mother looked confused and kept casting looks between me and the bodyguards.
“I don't know. The CCTV camera footage caught you walking into the hotel and then into the room but David had requested a few months back that the camera be removed from that room so we're oblivious.” She explained calmly and I inwardly thumbed up, I had gotten her where I wanted her to be.
“I can't. I can't do the tiniest of harm to David.” I choked on my words, bringing on the waterworks. They're a powerful family with the biggest weakness as a key character - their ever-gullible mother, easily bought by tears. “I love him.” I whimpered, sinking into my seat as if in a state of denial about what happened.
I locked her eyes into a tender gaze, “I love him, Mama. He's everything to me. I had waited years to have him all to myself until this… this time?” I made sure she read all of the emotions I'd tactically displayed in my eyes. Are you surprised? The eyes can be manipulated to put what would suit the reader there. Only a lie-detector test can help with the truth each time because I've deceived detectives and interrogators right from my teenage days with this eye technique.
I jerked up quickly, “It must be Sophia, Ma. She must still love him and he uses that same hotel and room with her.” A lump formed in my throat. If David just wanted a replication of Sophia in everything including our meeting places, why then wasn't he faithful to her? I wasn't any prettier or sexier, why did he cheat on her? Or is that just a part of his makeup?
“Stop with the act already.” I heard a voice that sent chills down my spine and fear into every corner of my brain. You guessed right, it was my Mum's.
“Mrs Nelsons, I'll make sure such isn't repeated again, all right? My daughter can be a handful sometimes especially when she didn't take her meds.” She spoke in a professional tone which could pass for a plea but I knew it was a death threat.
“Thank you.” My mother-in-law quipped and walked out of my father's house without accepting the handshake Mum had offered.
My insides were on a riot. My heart was pounding so loudly that I felt everyone could hear it. My head didn't stay out of the panic because it started to slam hard in a headache. My stomach churned and that made me fart when I couldn't regulate the folding anymore.
“Pick up your phone, young lady and search what's trending concerning the stunt your sister pulled to get this family into the eyes of the press,” Mum commanded and I did as she asked the same instant. When the fear that Mum's commands brought kicked in, I became a robot, doing as asked without pausing to think or breathe.
