Chapter 53 Evil?
Chapter 53 Evil?
KAITLYN
Silence reigns in the car as Philippe drives through the busy road.
I glance at him for the sixth time, expecting him to speak and save me from tension, but he doesn't.
Instead, he keeps his eyes on the road and grips the wheels tighter like it will break if he dare lets go.
I can't take the silence anymore. I need a freaking reason why I'm in his car, heading to God knows where!
“What's going on, Philippe?" I ask, finally breaking the annoying silence.
He glances at me, his eyes dark and full of emotions that I can't predict.
He tears his gaze back to the road, ignoring me again. I sigh and slap my hand over my forehead, slightly hitting the frustration level.
"Philippe, are you going to tell me what is going on, or do you want me to force it out of your mouth?” I snap, reaching for my phone to call Ana or anyone who can get me back home.
Philippe slams his feet on the brake pedal, and the car jerks to a stop. I almost fall out of my seat when the car lurches to a halt. I gasp out and grip my shirt, staring at my phone, which is lying at my feet.
"You don't trust me?” Philippe scoffs.
I slowly raise my head and look at him.
His lips twitch up in disbelief, and he stares at me like he has seen a disgusting sight.
“You think I'll hurt you? You want to call Jesse to save you from your childhood friend?" He mutters, disappointment in his voice.
My throat knots, and guilt tightens my heart as I realise just how foolish I was that minute that passed.
“No, I… I wasn't going to…”
He scoffs loudly and continues to drive when the traffic light flickers to green.
I feel so stupid for acting that way. Philippe must be disappointed in me.
We've been friends for years, but I still acted like I was just meeting him for the first time.
Staying with Nikolai has messed up my mind so much that I can't even trust the people who have always cared about me.
"I'm sorry,” I whisper.
He looks at me, his lips twitching into a smile.
"I'm not upset,” he says, and I feel something lift off my chest.
I sigh and drop my head, staring out of the window.
He swerves out of the busy tarred road into a humpy, lonely path.
“Where are we going?" I ask, my heart racing again.
He looks at me and sighs again.
I lean back into the seat, filled with guilt and worry.
"You ordered someone to make an investigation about Nikolai's background, didn't you?” He begins to speak.
I swerve my head in his direction, my eyes widening.
“How did you know?" I ask.
Did that fuckass Sam open his loud mouth?
“I found out," he says.
I knew it. Sam will never keep whatever he finds out to himself. I should have hired a professional detective who isn't familiar with me.
“I'll kill Sam if I find him," I blurt out, clenching my fist.
"He didn't tell me, he knows nothing,” Philippe says, staring at me with an amused smile on his face.
I sigh in relief. Strangely, I don't want anyone finding out how evil Nikolai is.
If I get back, I'll tell Sam to stop the investigation since I already know what I wanted to know.
“I don't need anyone to tell me who that man is…" Philippe pauses and waits till I have given all my attention before continuing. I sit up and lean towards him, watching his lips with all my attention on him.
I wonder what he knows about Nikolai. Does he know he kills people? Is that why he's taking me away from that house?
"I've known him way before he came back to Spain,” he says, and my heart clenches.
Does it have to do with him being Philippe's father's godson?
"Is he your father's godson?” I asks.
Philippe looks at me and chuckles.
"I can't tell,” he answers.
My eyes dim as I try to interpret his words.
“But… I do know Nikolai is not a good man. He is only going to bring danger to you,” he says, and shivers wash down my back as flashes of those bodies haunt my mind.
I grip my trembling hands and gulp hard.
"I know, I've seen things…” I pause as my lips tremble.
Should I tell him? Should I tell him what I have seen?
I take a deep breath and gulp hard before looking up at him again.
"I've seen him kill,” I blurt out.
The car jerks to a stop, and he gasps, letting go of the steering wheel.
He drops his head on the headrest and stares out of the window.
It feels like something just left my chest, but even after that, I have a stronger and taunting feeling of fear gnawing at my skin.
“Do you know about that?" I ask, and he nods.
"You need to leave him,” he says, and I nod.
“I'm working on that. I need to leave him soon so I can get back with Jesse–"
“You can't go to Jesse either," he says. My jaw drops, and my head tilts to the side.
"What?”
Philippe licks his lower lip and faces me.
"Jesse isn't good for you either. You need to stay away from the Rider family, especially Jesse,” he says.
My eyes dim in confusion.
“I don't understand. Why do I need to leave Jesse? Because I married Nikolai?" I ask.
Philippe sighs and ignites the car, then begins to drive.
"If this is about Nikolai, then you have nothing to worry about. He has never touched me, and I won't let him until I've left him. I'm never going to sleep with Jesse's brother–”
"This is not what it is about!” Philippe growls as he jerks the car to a stop again.
I gasp, almost falling out of my seat again.
I jerk my head up, filled with rage.
"Then what is it about?” I snap.
He scoffs and shakes his head, then reaches for the ignition switch.
“Do you like me or something? Is that why you want me to leave Jesse?" I ask, and his hand freezes.
He slowly tilts his head to the side, staring at me with shock spread over his face.
"Like you? You think I'm taking you away from them because I like you?” He scoffs loudly.
I snap my head back at his words.
“Taking me away? Where are you taking me to?" I ask.
He clenches his jaw and reaches for the ignition switch, but I grab his hand, stopping him.
“Where are you taking me to? Tell me now!" I grouse, glaring hard at him.
“The seaport," he says, and my jaw drops.
"An illegal seaport. We're going far away from this place,” he says, and my stomach drops.
My eyes widen, and I let go of his hand, fear biting down at me.
"What?” I gasp.
My eyes search for the door handle, and I find it. I reach for it, but he grabs my hand.
"You're doing the wrong thing. I'm only trying to protect you from danger!” He snap.
I scowl at him and knock his hand away.
"No, you're not!” I groan and pull the door open.
I glare at him one last time before slamming the door shut.
“Don't call me, look for me, or see me as a friend. I don't ever want to see your disgusting face again!" I snap and turn my heel.
“Kait! Listen! I'm only trying to keep you away from them!”
“Bastard!” I curse and march forward without paying attention to him.
I can't believe I trusted him. How can he take me away without my permission?
I should have known about his jealousy a long time ago. There is no difference between him and Nikolai. No difference!
“Kait, listen, Nikolai’s father–"
Boom!
I shout and
fall to the ground as a loud crash hits behind me.
My head swirls, a piercing sound fills my head, and my heart races in fear and horror.
I slowly raise my head, the long, piercing sound still not leaving me alone.
My jaw falls open, and my heart drops into the pit of my belly at the horror before me.
"Philippe!!!” I scream before the darkness hits me
