Chapter 51 Messed up
Chapter 51 Messed up
KAITLYN
I feel horror clench my throat as I stare at the message that pops into my phone.
I take a deep breath and shake my head, then drop the phone.
Why will I join hands with the same man who tried to kill me?
That is impossible! That will never happen!
I spring up from the chair, still shaking my head. I will rather succumb to Nikolai than work with that bastard.
I tear a glare at the phone, then turn and walk into the bathroom, my heart still clenched in astonishment.
I will have to tell Nikolai about this when he returns.
“No! Why should you do that? It's not like I care about him," I whisper to myself and shake my head again.
I will have to keep it to myself for the time being.
After taking a shower, which took longer than usual because of the thoughts in my head, I shuffled out of the bathroom in only a towel.
“Ah!" I jump to the door when my eyes fall on a figure bent over the bed.
My racing heart slows when I realize it is the headmaid. This message is messing with my head.
She stirs and spins around, eyes widening in surprise.
“Are you okay?" She asks in a calm voice full of worry.
“Yes!" I nod, but my trembling voice gives me away.
The woman's eyes dim, and she steps closer, her head tilting to the side.
“You sound… scared,” the woman whispers, running her eyes around my body.
I grip my hand behind my back and shake my head in disagreement.
“No, I'm totally fine," I reply in a firmer voice. Those lines keep appearing in my head, the voice of that bastard constantly echoing in my head.
I shiver and rub my hand over my arm, then turn towards the bed.
I pick up the dress the woman had dropped on the bed and pull it on.
I walk towards the mirror and pick up the lip gloss. My eyes dart to my phone, and my heart dips into the bottom of my belly.
I sigh, run my hand through my hair, and get up from the chair.
My head is spinning around in circles, and all I can hear is his voice in my head, repeating the question over and over again.
“Maam Kaitlyn!"
I gasp and jerk my head up, breath ragging, eyes as wide as saucers.
“Help!” I gasp out and grip her hand, leaning into her.
A sharp gasp escapes her mouth when I lean on her unexpectedly.
She brushes off the shock as she places her hand on my head.
“It's okay, calm down," she whispers in a soothing voice.
I don't know how she is doing it, but I am calming down slowly.
My eyes slowly open, and my heart returns to its normal beating.
After being in the woman's hand for more than five minutes, I pull away from her and wipe away the tear that drops from my eyes.
“What happened?" She asks.
I suck in a deep breath and shake my head.
“Nothing," I whisper.
With that look in her eyes, I can tell that she doesn't seem to buy the answer.
“Don't lie to me, Ma'am Kaitlyn, it's for your own good," she mutters.
Should I tell her the truth? If I do, she will certainly tell Nikolai about it.
I need to sort this out myself and take revenge on that man.
But what should I tell this woman now?
“Okay," I shrug.
"It's… It's about Jesse. He isn't… someone died… Nikolai…” I choke and grip my throat, dropping my head in pain.
“It's okay, it's okay," she coos.
My teeth sink into the bottom of my lips as I fake cry on her shoulders.
It finally worked.
“I made you breakfast, do you want to eat now?” She asks, her hand combing through my hair.
“Yes, I'm famished," I yawn and take a step back.
She smiles, nods, and waves her hand towards the door.
“Come downstairs for breakfast," she says and turns towards the door.
I trail after her to the dining room and sit down at the table, waiting for her to set the table.
“I made toast and scrambled eggs. You're okay with it, right?" She asks when she returns with a small tray containing toasts and jam.
“Sure, maybe you can add tea too?" I mutter.
She smiles and nods, then walks away.
I sigh loudly and grab a toast from the tray. I bite into it and munch it hurriedly as my belly groans for food.
My heart gives a wild leap when I hear my phone ring.
“I'll get it," a maid says as I battle with myself.
“Okay."
She slips out of the dining room, and my heart begins to race.
“Who could it be?" I whisper.
I hope it isn't him. What if it is? What if…
I groan and grip my head, my throat knotting at the thought.
Just when I thought I would get over what happened between Nikolai and me this morning, this has to come up.
Why is my morning messed up? Why?
Embarrassing myself in front of people, getting caught at the wrong time, and… and doing unimaginable things with Nikolai. I can still feel his hands and lips around my body. His words. His words still hit me like crazy. And just when I thought that wasn't enough, that Giovanni bastard had to come for my hand.
“Fuck! Everything is just messed up. It's all messed–"
"Ma'am!”
My head jerks up when the voice of maid hits my ears.
“What?" I breathe out.
She runs her eyes over my body, narrowing them in confusion.
“Your phone," she says and extends it to me.
"Oh, yes,” I mutter and take it.
The moment I do, the phone begins ringing again, and my heart tightens.
I mutter a short prayer and look at the name that flashes across the screen.
The fear disappears, and relief washes over me when Philippe’s name flashes across the screen.
I sigh in relief and accept the call quickly.
“Hey!"
"Get ready, I'm taking you somewhere!” He rasps out.
I can sense that something is wrong. He didn't even remember to exchange pleasantries with me.
“Where?" I ask.
A pause follows my question, then a click of a lighter before he speaks.
“I'm heading to your place right now…”
“Where?" I ask again. This time, my voice is raised.
He pauses again and sighs after a long stretch of silence.
“You'll find out when we get there," he says, and before I can part my lips to protest, the line goes dead.
