Chapter 191 One Hundred& Ninety one
Chapter 191 One Hundred& Ninety one
EMMA POV
FOUR MONTHS IN
The coffee tasted off, leaving an unpleasant taste in my tongue.
I stared at my cup as it had betrayed me.
Marcus looked over from his desk. "You okay?" he asked.
"Coffee tastes weird," I said. "What did you put in this? Are you sure the beans haven’t gone bad?”
"Nah, we got a new bag yesterday," he said. "Why?” He took a sip from his. “It tastes amazing to me. Are you feeling okay?”
"I'm fine," I said, smiling, but the truth is, I wasn't fine. I'd been feeling off all week. Tired. Nauseous. Emotional about things that shouldn't make me emotional.
I'd cried at a commercial about paper towels yesterday.
Paper towels.
"You should go home early," Marcus said. "You look exhausted."
"I'm fine," I said again, but I set the coffee down.
Four months into marriage, and I was absolutely loving it.
Ryan came home every other weekend now that he'd gotten more control over his schedule with the team. We'd fall into a routine. He'd arrive Friday night, we'd have dinner, we'd spend Saturday doing normal couple things like grocery shopping and going to movies. Sunday we'd spend in bed, and then Monday morning he'd have to head back to Toronto.
It was hard being apart, but having him home regularly made it easier.
And my work was going amazingly. I'd just closed a big case. A woman who'd been wrongfully accused of a crime was finally exonerated thanks to evidence I'd helped dig up. She'd cried in my arms when we won the case.
This was why I'd become a lawyer. For moments like that. For people like her.
But something was off with my body.
I'd been exhausted for days. I couldn't eat without feeling nauseous. And my period was late. Really late.
Like two weeks late.
I tried not to think about it.
After a long day at work, I decided to drop by the pharmacy, where I explained to the lady on duty, and she advised me to take a pregnancy test.
I laughed out loud when she said cause it was ridiculous, I couldn’t be pregnant.
I grabbed three pregnancy tests, like I was being paranoid. I was on the pill. We used protection most of the time. The chances of my being pregnant were basically zero.
Except.
There was that one time. A few weeks ago, when Ryan had come home, and we'd gotten drunk on wine and weren't thinking straight, and had skipped the condom because we got caught up in the moment.
Surely that wasn't enough.
But my body was telling me something. And the look the pharmacist was giving me…
When I got home, I locked myself in the bathroom.
The first test took three minutes to show results.
Two pink lines.
I stared at it for a long time.
Pregnant.
I was pregnant. I couldn’t believe it.
I did the second test just to be sure.
Two pink lines.
The third test. Two pink lines.
I sat on the bathroom floor and just breathed.
I was going to be a mom.
Me.
Four months into my marriage.
We hadn't even talked about kids yet. We'd said we wanted them eventually, but eventually was supposed to be in a few years. Not now. Not when I was just starting my career. Not when Ryan was in the middle of building his NHL career.
But the baby didn't care about our timeline.
The baby was coming anyway.
I called Ryan from the bathroom.
He answered on the second ring.
"Hey, beautiful," he said. "I was just thinking about you."
"We need to talk," I said, and he immediately went serious.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"I'm pregnant," I said softly.
There was complete silence on the other end of the line.
"Ryan?" I said. "Did you hear me?"
"You're pregnant?" he repeated.
"Yeah," I said. "I found out today. I took three tests. They're all positive."
"You're pregnant," he said again, like he needed to keep saying it to make it real. "We're having a baby?"
"Yeah," I said. "I'm sorry. I know this wasn't planned. I know we weren't—"
"Are you kidding me?" he said, and his voice was shaking. "Don't you dare apologize. This is the best news I've heard in months." He screamed
"Really?" I asked.
"Emma, yes," he said. "This is amazing. You're amazing. We're going to have a baby. A little version of us. Am going to be a dad "
I could hear him grinning through the phone.
"I'm coming home tonight," he said. "I don't care that it's Wednesday. I don't care that I'm supposed to be at practice tomorrow. I'm coming home right now."
"You don't have to—" I started.
"I'm already in the car," he said. "I'll catch the next flight. I want to see you. I want to hold you. I want to celebrate this."
He hung up before I could say anything else.
I sat on the bathroom floor for another few minutes, just processing.
I was married.
I was successful at work.
I was pregnant…. I couldn't believe it.
I, Emma Blackwell, am going to be a mummy
