Chapter 28.

Chapter 28.
Deena and Orlando lay still in the cramped tunnel, the cold metal walls pressing in from all sides. The stale air tasted of rust and dust, and every breath seemed heavier than the last. The silence between them was thick — not just from the physical darkness, but the weight of everything they'd uncovered. The academy was a living nightmare, and now, trapped underground, they faced its beating heart.

Orlando's voice finally broke the stillness. "We can't stay here long. Those Sentinels will regroup, and the academy's security is tightening. We need to find The Heart — whatever Mary meant by that."

Deena nodded, her fingers tracing the worn edges of Mary's diary. "The map shows a chamber beneath the east wing. We're close."

A sudden rumble echoed through the tunnel. Dust cascaded from above, and the faint throb of machinery vibrated in the walls.

"Something's waking up," Orlando whispered, eyes narrowed. "We're running out of time."

Deena took a deep breath, pushing the panic aside. "We move. Now."

They crawled forward, the tunnel twisting and slanting steeply downward. Water dripped from unseen cracks, pooling at their knees, chilling them to the bone. The light from Deena's phone barely pierced the darkness, casting eerie shadows that danced like specters on the tunnel walls.

At last, they emerged into a vast underground cavern — the air thick with electricity and a faint hum of power. It felt less like a room and more like the core of a living organism.

Before them lay a massive chamber, walls lined with cables and tubes feeding into a giant crystalline structure glowing with an unnatural, pulsating light. It was a heart — literal and metaphorical — the source of the academy's power.

Orlando swallowed hard. "The heart of Woodlock."

Deena stepped forward, eyes fixed on the crystalline mass. It shimmered with colors that shifted between violet, green, and black, like liquid shadow and light intertwined. Her pulse quickened.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, and a deep voice, resonant and hollow, filled the chamber.

"Welcome, seekers of truth."

They spun around, blinking in disbelief.

From the shadows stepped a figure, tall and cloaked in black. His eyes gleamed with a cold intelligence that sent a chill down Deena's spine.

"Professor Alden," Orlando said through gritted teeth.

Alden smiled thinly, his gaze flickering to the glowing heart. "You've come far, but the truth is not yours to wield."

Deena squared her shoulders. "The truth belongs to everyone. You've trapped children here, turned them into experiments. This ends now."

Alden laughed, a sound devoid of warmth. "Ends? No, it only begins. You see this heart? It's not just a power source. It's a consciousness — a fusion of human and machine, born from the very experiments Mary fought against."

Deena's mind raced. "You mean the academy... is alive?"

"More than alive," Alden said, stepping closer. "It's sentient. It learns, evolves. The children are its seeds, and I am its architect."

Orlando clenched his fists. "You're monsters."

"Monsters?" Alden's eyes sparkled with dark amusement. "No. We are pioneers, shaping the future. But the heart demands sacrifice — order, control, perfection. Mary was a threat because she dared to defy that order."

Deena felt a wave of anger and grief crash through her. "Mary didn't just defy. She fought for freedom."

Alden's expression hardened. "Freedom is chaos. Chaos destroys."

The chamber pulsed louder, lights flickering as if the heart itself was breathing, alive and watching.

Orlando stepped forward, voice low but fierce. "We'll stop this. We'll free the children."

Alden's smile returned, colder than ever. "You think you can defy the heart? You are already part of it — its design, its destiny. You cannot escape."

Deena's gaze locked with Orlando's. This was no longer just a fight for their lives, but for the very soul of the academy — and the stolen futures of every child trapped within.

With a sudden roar, Alden raised a hand, and the crystalline heart flared bright, sending a shockwave through the chamber. The floor trembled beneath them, and the cables writhed like serpents.

Deena grabbed Orlando's arm. "Run!"

They sprinted through the labyrinthine corridors, alarms blaring, red lights flashing like the heartbeat of a beast enraged. The Sentinels were closing in again, relentless and merciless.

Breath ragged, Deena's mind raced. How could they destroy something that was alive — something that thought, adapted, and hunted?

Suddenly, Orlando stopped, pulling her into a narrow alcove.

"There," he whispered, pointing to a panel with a blinking red button.

Deena's heart pounded. "What is it?"

"A kill switch. Mary's final fail-safe."

Deena's fingers trembled as she reached for the button. "This is it."

The door behind them crashed open, and Alden's cold voice echoed, "You cannot win."

Deena pressed the button.

The chamber shook violently as the heart's light dimmed and the machinery powered down. The Sentinels faltered, their red eyes blinking out one by one.

The oppressive presence lifted, leaving behind a silence so deep it was almost deafening.

They stumbled back into the cavern, eyes wide with disbelief. The academy's pulse slowed — for the first time, its iron grip loosening.

Orlando let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "It's over."

Deena shook her head slowly. "No. It's just beginning."

She opened Mary's diary, and one final note caught her eye — a warning written in hurried script:

"The heart may fall, but its shadows remain. Trust no one. The academy's secrets are deeper than we know."

The chamber doors slammed shut behind them, plunging them into darkness.

And somewhere, far below, a faint heartbeat echoed.
