"Uh..." I looked at Rhys "No, I'm Kassi"

Rhys vampire Uncle shook his head twice before staring at me like a creep.
"I'm sorry," he said sincerely "You just look like a friend who I haven't seen in a very long time" 47
"It's okay" I smiled slightly before checking on my brother
I breathe a sigh of relief when I found him sleeping, curled up into a little ball.
"What are you doing here Uncle Xander?" Rhys asked
"Can't a man visit his favorite Alpha Nephew?" Rhys uncle leaned forward and grinned.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Orion shift uncomfortably on his feet and stand closer to me.
Rhys Uncle caught the movement and zeroed in on Orion.
"And who is this?" he asked
"This is Orion" Rhys answered "Kassi's brother"
"Oh?" Xander said before approaching us "The Princess has another brother?"
"How do you know who I am?" I asked
He grinned at me and Orion growled "Oh Darling, everyone knows who you are" 2
I stiffened, not only from his words but also, from him tucking my hair behind my ear. 2
"Uncle..." Rhys's tone had a challenging tone "Don't..."
"A Royal and Hunter will forever be bound, for they will produce a child that will wear the crown. Once the child meets their Mate, will their destined fate await"

I stared blankly at him "Is that supposed to mean something to me?" 4
"Well, aren't you a feisty one" he chuckled before looking at Rhys "Good luck with this one"
Rhys ignored his Uncle "What are you doing here? In the dungeon?"
"More importantly" I added, "Why are you watching my brother?"
"I find Shifting fascinating" he answered bluntly "Considering that every Pack shifting is different and since yours is on the verge of extinction, I thought this might be my one last chance to observe a shifting from the First Pack ever created" 11
"So you find my brother suffering in agony amusing and insightful?" I stepped forward and just when I got into the stupid vampire's face, Orion pulled me back. 12
"Stand down Kassiopeia" he whispered "You don't know what he's capable of" 1

"He doesn't know what I'm capable of" I growled before shaking his arm off of me "Let go of me" 61
His grip tightened
"I didn't mean to be rude Princess" Rhys Uncle raised his hands in surrender "But your family is just interesting to me"
"Why is that?" I got closer and Orion's grip tightened "What do you know about my family and me?"
He stared at me, a smirk forming on his face.
Just as he was about to say something, a small timid voice spoke up.
"Sissy..." 4
I turned and all but ran to the door "Hey buddy"
"Sissy" Ares cried "Where are you?!"
He sat there crying and calling out my name.
I clawed at the door, trying to open it "Why can't he hear me?"
"It's sound-proof from the inside," Matt said quietly "We can hear him but he can't hear us
"Let me in" I demanded 1
"No" Rhys, His Uncle, and Orion said at the same time.
I glared "Somebody better open this door right now"
"And that's our cue to go" Matt mumbled to the others. 18
Everyone that joined us after discovering Rhys Uncle was here, now left.
I turned to Rhys and crossed my arms "Open this door"
"No"
"Rhys..." I pleaded "Please?"
"No..." he posture said one thing but his eyes held hesitation.
"Sit down boy" Rhys Uncle rolled his eyes "She's playing you" 26
"No, I'm not" I exclaimed
"Yes you are" he pointed at me "You can't expect him not to react after you bat those eyelashes" 52
Rhys blushed and I felt my face flush "Whatever, that wasn't my intention" 3
"Hmm..." he rolled his eyes before going to the door that held Ares.
He flicked his wrist and a tablet popped up.
"How in the hell did you do that?" I exclaimed, "I've been trying for two days to figure out how to break into that room!"

"When your as old as me," he typed in some numbers "You learn to pick up a few things" 3
"What are you doing" Rhys snapped before lunging for his Uncle
Rhys Uncle was faster, punching in a few more numbers before a clicking sound was heard throughout the room. 2
My heart nearly jumped out of my throat when I saw Ares, in his wolf form, emerge from the room.
He sniffed the air before snarling at Rhys Uncle and running out of the room.
"Ares!!" I ran after him "Wait!!"
"Kassi" Rhys pulled me back "Not a good idea"
"I swear to God" I glared at all three men "If someone man-handles me one more time, they'll be missing some very important anatomical parts that make them male"92
Everyone winced
"Now let me go to my brother"
"He'll be okay Kassi" Orion reassured me "I did the same thing when I changed"
"So did I," Rhys said
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?" I deadpanned "Because if so, it didn't" 31
"Kassi..." Rhys sighed
I ignored him and looked at his Uncle
"Why did you release him if I couldn't see him?"
"Because it needed to be done" He sat down and took a long drink from his cup "His shifting process needs to be completed soon. A part of the shifting process is for the Wolf and Human to survive a night outside, alone, in order to enhance their hunting abilities. Rhys was never going to release Ares because he didn't want you to get upset with him"
I looked at Rhys and he looked away, his cheeks blushing pink.
"I thought every Shifting process was different?" I asked, "How did you know that Ares needed to be released?"
He smiled, his eyes taking on a faraway look "My friend, the one you look and act so much like, taught me" 33
"Okay..." I said "But that still doesn't explain how you knew this would work for Ares. We come from a different Pack than normal Wolves do. Apparently, what works for other Packs has the opposite effect for us "2
"My friend was very familiar with the traditions of your Pack" he smiled slightly "Well, considering, she was the youngest Princess of the Dimitriou family"
My lips parted in shock
"I knew your Aunt Athena" He smiled slightly "She was one of the few that I trusted with my life"55
I was flabbergasted, not knowing that I had an Aunt.
My father had told me that he was an only child
"She died when she was 16" he looked at the floor "That's why I was so shocked when you walked it. It was like I was looking at a ghost" 40

I punched the punching bag with all my might, hoping that somehow my frustration and anger could be transferred into the punching bag.
After Ares disappeared into the night, I called my Mom for the millionth time.
When she didn't answer, I decided to do something productive to take my mind off the fact that my brother is out in the wilderness4

"If you keep punching like that, you'll make your knuckles raw"
"I don't care" I punched harder
"You might not care but Rhys will freak if you walk in the house with bloody knuckles," Everly said.
"What do you want me to do?" I sighed "It's either this or I pace a hole into Rhys floor"
"I really don't think he would mind a hole in his floor as long as it came from you" she smirked
"Everly," I rolled my eyes "I'm not in the mood for jokes"
"He'll be fine Kassi" Her smirk disappeared "His Wolf won't fail him"
"I just..." I sighed "Everything's just a lot to process"
She sat, crisscrossed, on the floor before patting the mat 6
I reluctantly followed her lead
"What's bothering you the most? The fact that you're a Wolf, have a Soulmate, or the fact that everyone you've ever known lied to your face for your entire life?" 25
I picked at the extra skin on my nails "Surprisingly, finding out that I'm a Wolf doesn't bother me as much as I thought"
She cocked her head to the side in confusion "You know, most people would be beyond freaked if they found out they could shift into an animal" 11
I laughed "We'll I'm not most people. I'm weird" 62
She studied me for a second "And the Mate part doesn't bother you?"
I blushed "Not as much as as the lying part bothers me"
Her eyes lit up "Ooh...Do tell" 2
"No" I shook my head "It's weird"
"Why is it weird?" she sounded defensive "I'm a girl and I have a Mate. I know what you're going through"

"It's weird because you're one of Rhys friends"
"So?" she rolled her eyes "Haven't you heard of the girl code?" 8
"It's still weird through"
"What's weird?" Mia and Taylor asked, coming into the gym with plates of fruit in their hands. 1
I groaned

"Hey," Taylor said in awe "This is a nice gym"
"Thanks," Mia said "Luna Emmie decided to turn the Greenhouse into a Gym so we could work out in a serene environment" 1
"Cool," Taylor replied "Back home, my brother has our gym in the basement. I refuse to use it because I swear it's haunted. Plus, you have to go down like 100 flights of stairs just to get to the entrance of the stupid gym. By the time I make it there, I'm already exhausted" 15
Mia laughed
"Guys!" Everly waved like a madwoman "Can we please focus?" 2
"Oh yeah," Mia sat next to her "What were you two talking about?"
Taylor sat next to me and offered me some fruit
I snagged a few grapes 2
"How Kassi is in Love with Rhys"
I choked on my grapes 44
Mia squealed and Taylor, who saw me struggling to catch my breath, slapped my back. 1
I pointed at Everly "I am not in Love with Rhys"
"Yes, you are"
"No, I'm not"
"You are too!"
"Nu-uh"
"Liar Liar Pants on Fire" Everly sang 17
"Children" Mia interrupted "Please settle down" 12
Like the children we were, we stuck our tongues out at her 6
She rolled her eyes "Real mature guys"
I shrugged and Everly snickered
"But seriously" Everly deadpanned "Kassi likes Rhys" 5
Is that true Kass?" Taylor asked as she popped another grape in her mouth "I wouldn't blame you. He's one fine specimen" 2
Everly and Mia scrunched their noses in disgust and I felt a flare of jealousy quickly overcome me. 1
I squashed it down immediately
'She's your best friend' I thought 'Get ahold of yourself
"What?" she defended "You have to admit he isn't ugly?"
Mia shook her head
"Meh" Everly commented "To each their own"
"You're just saying that because you already got yourself an auburn hair hottie" 2
Everly sighed dreamily, a faraway look plastered on her face "Even if Shawn wasn't in my life, I still wouldn't like Rhys"
"Why?" I asked curiously
"Because he's too much of a pretty boy for me" she smirked "I like my men ruggedly handsome with a dash of nerdy" 69
Everyone laughed
"What about you Mia?" Taylor asked
She too took on that daydreamy look "I Love Matty"
"Oh..." Taylor smiled "You like the Tall and Brooding type" 5
We all snickered
"He's not brooding all the time" she defended
We gave her a look and she slumped her shoulders "Okay, he's brooding 90% of the time"
We laughed again
"And how about you Little Miss Chatterbox," Everly asked "What's your type?"
"Sadly, I don't have a type" Taylor answered 11
"Oh come on" Everly rolled her eyes "Everyone has a type"
"Not me" Taylor smiled "As long as they're nice, genuine, funny, and can handle my overprotective brothers, then I'm cool with whichever type of guy the Moon Goddess blesses me with" 27
Suddenly, all eyes turned on me
I gulped
"And how about you Luna?" Everly teased "Does your type happen to have grey eyes with pretty boy looks?" 1
I blushed and they all squealed
"I KNEW IT!!" Taylor said before looking at the others "Ever since we were kids she's always had a thing for guys with grey eyes" 45
"Oh my God" I covered my blushing face "I can't believe you told them that!" 6
"What!" she laughed "It's true!!'
I pinched her "Yeah, but you're not supposed to say anything! You promised!"
She howled with pain and the others howled with laughter. 1
Soon, I too was joining in on the laughter
"There's no need to be embarrassed Luna" Mia smiled "Apparently, I like Tall and Brooding moody guys" 2
"And I like red-headed Nerds" Everly snorted 10
"I just like guys" Taylor announced "I'm not picky" 86
We all laughed
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door and all the guys poked their heads in, sans Kaden. 7
From the red tint on Rhys's cheeks and the smirks from the other guys, I knew without a doubt that they heard our conversation or at least a snippet of it. 120
"Uh...I...Uh" Rhys cleared his throat, avoiding my eyes "I just wanted to let you know that Ares came back" 11
I jumped up "Really?"
He glanced at me before turning scarlet red and nodding 103
The girls giggled from behind me and the boy's smirk grew 8
I blushed before rushing out of there to the sound of giggling. 7
Rhys
I was reading some documents when the boys busted through my office door
"Come quick!" Matt hissed at me
"What's wrong?" I jumped up and put my glasses on the desk before following them. 4
"Hurry up Alpha!" Matt snapped before grabbing my arms and rushing me in the direction of the gym.5
"What's wrong Matthew?" he cringed at my use of his the full name "Is Kassi okay?"
"She's fine" Ethan smirked 1
I growled and looked at my friends "What is going on!"
"Just wait" Matt grumbled
We turned the corner and I immediately heard the girl's voices "Are you sure we are supposed to be listening to this?" I whispered
"Even if Shawn wasn't in my life, I still wouldn't like Rhys" Ever's voice sounded 41
"Why?" Kassi asked curiously and my heart sped up at the sound of her melodious voice.
"Because he's too much of a pretty boy for me" Ever replied "I like my men ruggedly handsome with a dash of nerdy"1
Shawn blushed and Matt snickered "You're more than a dash of Nerdy" 21
"Shut up"
"What about you Mia?" Alpha Kaden's sister asked
"I Love Matty" Mia's voice sounded
Matt smirked and looked at us confidently
"Oh..." Taylor's voice sounded clear "You like the Tall and Brooding type"1
Matt's smiled dropped and Shawn snickered 27
"He's not brooding all the time" Mia defended
There was a pause "Okay, he's brooding 90% of the time"
I, along with the rest of the boys, laughed at Matt's expression 5
"I am not Brooding!" Matt whisper-yelled
"Yeah, you are Dude" Shawn laughed
"How?" Matt asked
"You're quiet and have an ugly expression on your face most of the time," Ethan said bluntly16
"That's not an expression" I snickered "That's his face" 42
Matt shot me a dirty look "If you weren't my Alpha, I would have punched you"

"And if you would have done that, I would have killed you" I replied
"Just listen" he muttered
"And how about you Little Miss Chatterbox," Everly asked someone "What's your type?"
"Sadly, I don't have a type" Taylor answered
"I don't think I want to hear this" Ethan said in disgust "I'll see you guys later. I'm going to go before I puke"2
We waved him away and continued to listen to the girls
"Oh come on" Ever persisted "Everyone has a type"
"Not me" Taylor's muffled reply came
"What are they saying?" Shawn asked "Things got quiet"
"I don't know" I replied, straining my ears to hear
"And how about you Luna?" Everly said loudly, making it known that she knew we were listening "Does your type happen to have grey eyes with pretty boy looks?"32
My heart sped up and I looked at my friends
They looked at me encouragingly but I sensed underneath their encouragement, that they were just as nervous as me to hear Kassi's answer.
"I KNEW IT!!" Taylor exclaimed excitedly "Ever since we were kids she's always had a thing for guys with grey eyes"
"Wait! What did she say!!" I asked frantically "Did I miss something?" 18
They shook their heads "We didn't hear her answer either"
I groaned
"Oh my God," Kassi's reply came "I can't believe you told them that!"
"What!" she laughed "It's true!!" 1
"So...." I whispered to them "Does that mean she likes me?" 24
They shrugged "I honestly don't know" Matt admitted
I groaned again
"It's okay Alpha" Shawn reassured me "Girls are confusing. If she likes you, she'll tell you. Just like Eve did to me" 25
"Yeah...I don't think that we are the case here" Matt said before turning to me "Just do what I did"
I snorted "I don't think Kassi would like it very much if I hauled her over my shoulder, took her out to the courtyard, and bit her in front of all the training Males"74
Matt smiled proudly "Mia liked it" 2
"Mia had a crush on you since middle school" Shawn pointed out "You could have done a cartwheel, rode in on a Unicorn, and turned into a frog, and Mia still would have liked it"37
I laughed

The girls laughed
"The guard at the Eastern border said that Ares showed up"
"Let him in," I said "And tell the guards to not interfere. He poses no threat"
"Yes Alpha" Matt replied
I walked to the gym door and knocked
The boys pushed me in and poked their heads in
I grunted and shrugged them off
"Uh...I...Uh" I began, purposely not looking at my Mate "I just wanted to let you know that Ares came back"
She jumped up, her scent engulfing me "Really?" 4
I glanced at her briefly before looking away and nodding, feeling my cheeks tinting red.
The girls giggled and I shot them a small glare.
Kassi rushed out of the room and I breathe a sigh of relief

I walked out to the backyard and saw both Ares and Orion sitting on the grass 1
In their Wolf forms.
Orion must have smelled me because his head whipped up and his big head nudged Ares.
Ares looked all around, like a puppy, until he spotted me.
I slowed my pace and locked eyes with Orion
"What is going on here?"
There was snapping, crackling, and popping much like a rice Krispy commercial before I came face-to-face with my older brother.14
"Oh come on Dude!" I covered my eyes quickly "I did not want to see all that!" 14
"What are you talking about?" he sounded confused
"Your naked body," I said in disgust
"Oh," he sounded sheepish "Sorry. I'm just so used to shifting that I didn't think anyone minded. Besides, I've shifted in front of you before and thought you got used to it"7
"In one day?" I snorted "Plus, I'm pretty sure I passed out after that because of shock"
"Okay," he said "I'm decent"
I uncovered my hands slowly, first by fanning my hands over my face before completely removing them when I realized that he was indeed, fully dressed.
"So...Once again, What's going on here?" I looked at him
"Has anyone ever told you that patience is not your strong suit?" 8
"All the time" I replied bluntly "It was written on every report card I ever got. From Preschool to Elementary, Middle, Junior High, and High School, all my teachers agreed that I had absolutely no patience"21
He raised an eyebrow but said nothing and nodded towards Ares.
"I believe he finished Phase Two of the Shifting Process"
I snapped my head towards Ares and noticed that he was guarding a journal with his paws.4
My mouth dropped open in shock
No Freaking Way
It was Impossible
"What is it?" Orion asked
I heard his voice and was about to reply but suddenly I felt my pulse in my ears and a nauseous feeling overcame me.
"Congratulations Ares Dimitriou of the Dimitriou Pack. You have passed two of the three tests needed in order to inherit the gift of the Goddess Selene. As Alpha of the Dimitriou Pack, I will now bestow upon you an opponent for the final test"30
Ares bowed his head and although my voice was relaying the message, I had no control over my words. It felt as if I was watching from a distance and couldn't do a single thing about it.
"Third Protector," My voice said loudly into the forest "Awaken and begin your duty" 6
I felt my body violently shaking and fell to my knees, gasping for air.
"Kassi!!" A body hugged me tightly "It's okay, you're okay"
Rhys's voice whispered calmly in my ear
I gripped his shirt, my body still shaking "What was that?!" 8
"Shh..." he rubbed my hair "It's okay, you're okay" he repeated 1
"What happened to me?" I cried and gripped his shirt tighter
"Kassi, look at me," he said softly before grabbing my cheeks gently in his hands "I don't know what that was but I promise we'll figure it out"
I stared into his Grey eyes, noting nothing but sincerity shining in them.
"What is a Protector?" I asked desperately "And why did I ask one to fight Ares?"
His eyes widened "What?"
"I asked a Protector to fight Ares"
He snapped his head to Orion, who was looking at me in concern "What did she say?"
"Something about a third Protector" he frowned "What does that mean?"
Rhys cursed and his eyes got darker.
A minute later, all his friends and mine were out here with us
He started counting, beginning with the twins and then jumping from Mia to Matt, Everly, and then Shawn.
"What's going on?" Mia asked
"Do any of you feel funny?"
Everyone shook their heads
"We feel fine"
Suddenly there were two loud growls behind me and my heart literally jumped to my throat before dropping down to my pinky toe.9
What did I do?

I watched as two Wolves, one of which was my brother, snarling as circled each other.
My heart lodged itself in my throat once again when I saw Ares, the slightly slimmer Wolf, lunge toward the other Wolf with his teeth bared.
Rhys glanced at our friends and cursed
"What's wrong?" I gripped his hand
"A Protector, as far as I know, is a Wolf who is given special abilities in order to protect you. A Protector is usually someone you know and trust"
"Okay.." I said slowly "So that means whoever Ares is fighting is one of my friends?"
I relaxed slightly, knowing that my friends would never intentionally hurt Ares
Rhys winced "Remember how I just said usually..."
I wanted to throw up now
This Wolf this was going to be the death of me 6
I looked at all the familiar faces of my friends on the porch of Rhys house and noticed that every single person I knew, both old and new faces alike, was standing there.
"So if they're all here..." I looked back at the fighting Wolves "Then who's fighting Ares?"9
Rhys winced for the second time "I don't know"
I felt woozy
"How many Protectors are we supposed to have?"
"I thought you only had 6 Protectors," he said "The Twins, Matt, Mia, Everly, and Shawn"
"And you're sure you don't know who this is?" 1
"Yes..." he started but he was immediately cut off when I heard a whimper.
I snapped back to the fight and noticed that one Wolf was on the floor.
Which one, I wasn't sure since they were so far away from us.
"Rhys..." I whispered, frozen to my spot
"Stay here" he commanded before nodding to Matt and Everly to follow him.
Normally, if anyone tried to "Command" me to do something, I would usually do the opposite of what they told me to do. However, when it came to situations like this, I could barely breathe, let alone think about trying to disobey what he told me.
I watched as all three of them approached the Wolves slowly.
Rhys was at the front with Matt and Everly flanking his sides.
Hands came down on each of my shoulders and I jumped
"He'll be fine" Taylor moved her hands so that they were wrapped around my waist in a side hug
"Yeah" Ethan's voice sounded before he wrapped an arm around my shoulders "He's a tough little dude"
I hugged them both back "I hope so or else I'll be one Protector down"9
"It's not the other Wolf's fault either, Kass" Taylor reminded me
I sighed "I know"
Suddenly, the two Wolves shifted and I sagged in relief when I saw that Ares was not the one on the whimpering.
Rhys motioned to the woods at Matt.
Matt nodded before jogging in the direction Rhys pointed at
Everly knelt down next to the other Wolf, asking him something.
A couple of minutes later, Matt came back with a handful of clothes.

He passed a set each to Rhys and Everly before kneeling down on the other side of the fallen Wolf.
Rhys passed the clothes to Ares and once he was dressed, Rhys murmured something and pointed in our direction.
Ares ran to me, nearly tripping on both the shirt and shorts that were substantially bigger than his small frame.
I broke away from my friends and nearly fell over when he slammed into me "Kassi!!" 5
I started silently crying, hugging him as tightly as I could without squeezing the life out of him.1
I wiped my tears away before Ares could see them and noticed, from the corner of my eye, that both Matt and Everly were supporting a boy, only a little older than Ares, inside the house. 7
I pulled back and looked at my baby brother, really taking in his features.
I noticed, while although he looked the same as he did before he shifted, there was something different about him.
He felt different and I just couldn't pinpoint what exactly changed about him.
Well...Besides the obvious.
Rhys came up from behind him, giving me a tight-lipped smile.
I looked back at Ares "Hey buddy"
He beamed and hugged me again "I missed you so much, Kassi!"1
"I missed you too buddy" I hugged him tighter before pulling back "Why don't you go talk to Taylor and Ethan for a bit? I just need to discuss something with Rhys real quick"
"Awe" he pouted "But I wanted to stay with you. To show you my Wolf!"
I smiled slightly, noting that I would have never thought, in a million years, that I would ever hear the sentence outside of one of my Werewolf novels.
"I'll meet him later"
"But he wants to see you now!" Ares whined
There was bark and everyone turned to see that Orion had shifted into his wolf. He barked again and I looked at Rhys for translation.3
Ares ran to Orion "Really? I can join you?"
Orion barked again and Ares looked at me "Can I go, sissy?"
"Uh..." I looked at him "Where?"
"On a Run," he said in a 'duh' tone "With Orion" 7
"I don't know..." I said, still unsure if he could shift back once the run was over
"Please?" he gave me his puppy dog eyes "Orion's just like me! I promise I'll be back soon!"1
"Let him go" Rhys whispered in my ear "Pups generally have a lot of excess energy when they first shift and if they don't release that energy, they could throw dangerous tantrums which usually turn into fights"1
"Fine," I said to him "But come back before the sun goes down" 22
He ran excitedly to me for one last hug before running back to Orion.
After a minute of nothing happening, I asked what was wrong.
"I can't turn back into my Wolfy" Ares whined 31
Rhys chuckled at both my worried face and Ares' whining
"Close your eyes and imagine yourself as a Wolf Ares" Rhys said "Imagine what you felt while you were a Wolf. How the wind felt against your coat, the leaves underneath your paws, the trust you put into your wolf and the trust he put into you"
I watched in fascination as Ares shifted into his Wolf.
The process was quick, quick enough for the human eye to miss it if you blinked, and surprisingly painless.
Ares yipped before taking off, weaving in and out between the trees.
I looked at Rhys "He'll be okay?"
"He should" he nudged me toward the house "Your brother's watching him. He won't let any harm come to him"
"I hope so" I muttered 2
