Chapter 148 Visiting Nelson
Chapter 148 Visiting Nelson
Just for consolation, Irene talked to the principal and asked where the killer presently was.
His answer made her let out a sigh of relief.
Jail.
His last words were still bothering her because it sounded as though he knew about the future she saw, the diary future her had written, and, most importantly, it sounded like he knew about how everything would end, with both her and Nelson dying by his hands.
When she was in the future, she discovered that everything went astray two years ago.
Which meant, for five years, he was somewhere. Jail, perhaps?
Another sigh left Irene's lips as she headed home. If she truly hadn't changed much and that bastard, even though he had killed a person, would not last too long in prison, it would mean that she had just five years of peace.
She was tired of constantly living in fear, terrified of whether or not she had changed the future.
Irene had decided. She was going to live each day well, do everything she wanted, and spend time with her friends... Only, with a bit more caution.
She went home that day, and both her parents were home.
The principal, who should have highlighted that they inform their parents, actually begged them to do the opposite. The school was in some crucial time, and any scandal at all, especially involving death, could be a problem.
So they told their parents something else as the reason why the school gave them a two-week holiday.
Irene's reason was that she wanted to spend time with her parents.
That night, she had insisted on sleeping in the same room with them, crying occasionally. They had been so worried, yet she couldn't tell them what was wrong. It would be hard to explain and, sincerely, she was tired of trying to explain it.
Every day for the entire two weeks, they came back as early as they could to take care of her. It was cute.
Irene had also grown to love cooking over the past two weeks.
Maybe it was the thought that this was what she would have chosen as a career that sparked her interest.
She returned home after the SAT exam to meet her parents at home, waiting for her to return.
With how many days off they had been taking this past month, Irene was almost worried about them losing their jobs. But she was happy.
...
"What's the worst that can happen?" Irene asked herself as she stood at the other side of the Clark's mansion, separated by the large gate in front of her.
The mansion was humongous. It was a bit bigger than the one Nelson had in her 'vision', but the design was almost the same thing.
She had woken up early the next day and gotten ready to visit someone. He hadn't called or texted her since yesterday, and he, just like Victoria, practically vanished after the exams, only that Victoria's disappearance wasn't voluntary.
Irene knew that she could have behaved like a normal teenage human being and just given him a call first, but she wanted to do something bigger.
Something a whole lot more romantic.
But she had been standing at the gate for almost twenty minutes, unsure of whether she was supposed to ring a doorbell, knock, or press some kind of button.
Her hands stood by her side, constantly clenching into a fist and releasing, then clenching again.
"What's the worst thing that can happen?" She repeated the question while trying to pep-talk herself into opening the door. But then she had an answer.
"Being turned away at the gate and told that the young master doesn't want to see you." Irene responded in a low tone, her face turning pink in embarrassment.
That would be horrible.
She would consider digging a hole and burying herself in it.
Why was she even here?!
Irene cried inwardly, letting out a muffled grunt.
Then she shook her head and inhaled.
"No." She said, nodding. "It isn't that bad. I'd just turn around and never leave my house ever again."
She said, trying to sound brave. Irene rubbed her sweaty palms against the side of her shirt before raising a finger, as though she was ready to press the button on the wall.
Her finger got close to it, her heartbeat became faster and louder, and just when she was about to click on it, Irene shook her head, dropping her hand.
"Ah, fuck, this was a terrible idea." She mumbled to herself, turning away.
She had just woken up with an urge to see Nelson. Their relationship had been pretty much stagnant since after Nelson's confession. Though they talked almost every day, it was never about that.
She wanted to clear a few things up, ask questions like, What are we? and all... But she wasn't that brave.
Irene turned away to leave, but she had barely taken a few steps when the huge gate made a sound and suddenly began moving.
Irene turned around, only to see Nelson standing at the other side of the mansion.
"Irene?" He called, his tone sounding surprised.
Irene blinked. "Em..." Raising her hand awkwardly, she waved it at him, flashing him a small smile. "Hi."
Nelson stared at her, his expression seeming confused. "What are you doing here?" He asked. Before Irene could answer, he turned his direction towards the side.
That was when Irene saw the guard who stood not too far from the gate, holding something like a remote in his hands.
"Let her in." Nelson commanded.
The gate opened further, and the guard bowed at her.
"Huh?" Irene stared at him before quickly walking in, passing through the open gate. "Oh, yeah. Well... I was in the neighborhood, so I just, I said I should stop by."
In the neighborhood?
Nelson raised a brow.
Irene bit her lips in nervousness. That sounded like a lie even to her. What on earth would bring her to this neighborhood?
"You should stop by?" Nelson repeated, his tone showing her how obvious his doubts were.
"Well, we weren't able to talk yesterday." Irene said to stop him from thinking too much about her excuse.
She took another step into the house. "By the time I got out of the exam hall, you were no longer in school." She explained, telling him the true reason why she was there.
Nelson nodded, a sigh leaving his lips. "That's because I had somewhere important to be."
Somewhere important?
Irene felt a pang in her chest at his words.
She knew he wasn't trying to say that she wasn't important or anything, but that was what she heard.
He hadn't even attempted mentioning prom night at all.
Whatever important thing he was doing better be worth it, Irene thought, as her face fell.
She nodded before looking at him again.
This time, her eyes took in Nelson's dressing. He was dressed casually in a white shirt, black pants, and a black jacket.
Even his casual clothes looked like they were straight out of a magazine.
But Irene didn't have time to fawn over him.
"Oh, I guess you have to be there too today." He casually mentioned, and the short nod Nelson gave her confirmed it.
She had come here at the wrong time, and now she was terribly regretting it.
Irene backed away, shaking her head as she did. Her nervousness returning.
"I'm sorry I stopped by unannounced." She said, turning and glancing behind her. "Next time I'd just..." Irene paused.
Wait, would there be a next time?
She couldn't put herself through this kind of torture again.
She was just about to leave when she heard Nelson call her name.
"Irene. Wait up." He called, and her feet halted. She turned around to look at him, and he stepped closer.
"Do you want to come with me?"
