Chapter Fifty-One
Demetria
The dang cat just talked to her. Not in her mind, but vocally. Kitty's intense eyes met Demetria's and held.
She felt like bugs were crawling all over her skin. She had powers, yes, but she did not like an animal speaking to her like a human without being prompted. Demetria had been reading Sabrina's diary, which honestly was boring beyond belief.
Who documented everything that happened to them in a day? She guessed that back then the lack of entertainment would make you do many boring things. Including writing down your every move.
Maybe that was why women had multiple children back then, because there was nothing better to do than bang it out.
None of it mattered anymore. Kitty told her what happened, and she had no reason not to believe the talking cat. The truth was that Demetria loved the thing. A werewolf reincarnated or not, he'd been there for her many times.
Kerry glared down at it like it had grown two heads. "I don't like that," he admitted.
"Me either," Demetria said, putting Sabrina's diary down. "But this is good. We can use it against her. I'm not sure Ike will forgive her for that. Look at the lengths he's gone to bring her back and to know his twin sister is behind her death? I doubt his twin love is that strong."
"Why would this cat give you that information and still want Ivory to succeed?" Kerry asked, still skeptical.
Demetria shrugged and stood up. "I mean, if I was Ivory, would you want me to fail?"
"I don't know. Maybe, if you were a raging lunatic."
"Exactly," she said. "You would want me to be punished for hurting you, but not die, right?"
"Is this a trick question?" he asked.
Demetria chuckled. "I don't know. But we have no reason not to believe him." She walked over and patted the top of his head. "It's weird to think he was an alpha. I did notice Ivory acted strange when she found out that I was mated to a wolf. But that seems like a decade ago."
Kerry wrapped his arm around Demetria's waist and pulled her close to his side. "Does he watch you get dressed? I mean, he is a dude trapped in a cat's body. I thought that was just a 'Hocus Pocus' thing."
She chuckled. "I'm sure he's seen me naked a few times, it's not like he can do anything about it."
"I can hear you," he hissed.
Demetria shivered and avoided his heated staredown.
Kerry jumped back and cringed. "Make him stop. Please. I hate it."
Demetria shrugged. "He does it when he wants. I have no control over it because Ivory put a curse on him. I can't undo it." She walked over toward the kitchen for a glass of water. "What did the professor have to say?"
Kerry walked around the chair carefully to avoid the cat. "Nothing, other than to take cover because they are coming, which we knew. Tomorrow night is the full moon."
Demetria put her glass in the sink. "I'm nervous."
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, too."
She leaned against the counter and crossed her arms over her chest. "Maybe with Dan's help, we will have an extra edge. A lycan has different strengths."
Kerry stepped over, and braced his palms on her shoulders. "Is the pendant safe?"
She nodded. "Cynthia and I hid it and put an enchantment on it. Hopefully that will keep them occupied long enough for us to cast them out of this world."
Kerry stroked her cheek. "Are you prepared for that?"
She looked up at him. "Prepared for what?"
"To kill someone?"
"They're already dead," she said softly.
Kerry must have noticed the sadness in her voice, and brought her over to him. "But you're sending them to their eternity, D. Are you prepared for that? I know they deserve it, and they are trying to kill you, but it will take a toll on you. I just want to make sure you know this is for the greater good."
"I know." She stared at Kerry's gaze for a long while. "Have you ever killed anyone?"
"I'm a werewolf, D. I've killed many werewolves to save our pack. It's part of our nature. Survival of the fittest. But it's different for you because you're kindhearted."
"Sometimes," she said, eyeing him. "I'm not when someone is trying to get my man. So be warned."
He chuckled. "You never have to worry about that. I'm yours, always."
She smiled. "We have to get up early to get everything together. Are you ready for bed?"
Kerry glanced over at the cat. "We need to make sure the door is locked. I don't like that thing roaming my house. I'm the only wolf in this house."
Demetria rolled her eyes. "I’m going to leave Cynthia a note about Kitty. I don't want him to get brave and say something to her. She might have a heart attack. She's had enough drama for the day." She snorted. "Dan. She's mated to Dan."
Kerry laughed while Demetria scribbled down a note for Cynthia and tapped it to her doorway.
The realization of a few hours separating them from facing the evil twin weighed on her. She didn't know what tomorrow would hold, but she knew Kerry lost his last mate in a war, and she was determined that both of them would make it out this time.
She couldn't let Kerry live on after losing his second chance. His heart would break.
Demetria glanced over at him and smiled. "Ready for bed?"
He nodded and offered her his hand.
She was ready to spend the night wrapped around him, Kerry holding her close to him because they'd face evil together tomorrow. Hopefully, for the last time.
No matter how big their army was, Demetria knew it would be tough to cast someone away who was already dead. The determination that Ike had to save his love mimicked Demetria's determination to save her mate.
Ike had met his match— Demetria wasn't going down without a fight.
Because Aunt D wasn't giving her body away for some dead girl.
