Chapter Forty-Seven

Demetria

The tornado of leaves fell to the ground in a giant swoosh, and Demetria felt her pride swell in her chest. It'd felt like forever since she was able to use her powers, or had a reason to use them. Her witchery was a talent she was born with, but one she also took seriously.

She didn’t hurt people that weren't trying to hurt her and she didn't use it for evil. Never. She may have shoved her ex-boyfriend down a small hill once, but he was totally okay afterward.

Demetria had grown up using it to shut doors and help clean her room, but even those things seemed unfair to her at times.

She tried to live like a human most days because it made her feel safer. Normal. Not under someone's radar. She'd gotten herself into a mess with her magic before, and she promised herself after Ike was gone forever that she would never be in that predicament again.

Cynthia jumped up beside her and clasped her hand over her shoulder. "I'm impressed, Demetria. You haven't practiced in a long time, and you're doing great."

Despite her suspicions of Cynthia, Demetria smiled over at her. She felt Kerry walk up behind her, and she playfully turned around and batted her eyelashes. "This will make you think twice about talking back to me, huh?"

He laughed. "I'll talk back any day if it gets me some time alone with you," he whispered into her ear.

Demetria turned and braced her palms on his chest. "How did it go with the professor?" she asked, waving Claire over.

Claire walked over. "Did he give us anything useful?"

"Perhaps. He said that she wanted him to keep an eye out for Demetria and that he could have her spell book if he did what she asked of him. She is searching for the pendant, but he said she was looking for a book that could ruin her."

"The spell book?" Claire asked, confused.

"No," he said, "I think that she is looking for Sabrina's diary."

Demetria folded her brow. "Why would she need her diary? What did Ivory do to Sabrina?"

He glanced over at Claire. "I was hoping you could find out for us while we train. You're already stronger than the rest of us," he said with a sly smile. "You don't need the extra practice as we do."

Claire gave him a sheepish look and kissed her bicep playfully. "That's a lame attempt at getting me to decipher her handwriting."

Kerry chuckled. "Only a little. You've figured most of it out since reading it."

"Okay," she said. "Only because you're mated to my aunt, and got that tattoo on your neck for her. I love it by the way. It suits you both."

Kerry reached up and touched his fingertips against the tattoo. It was unorthodox but he loved every minute of it. A few of the younger wolves played with him about it, but Kerry didn't care. It made Demetria happy; that was all that mattered.

She turned toward the group of wolves training and pointed toward the pack house. Axel waved at her from the midst of the group. "I'll let you all know when I find out something."

"Thank you, Claire," Demetria said, watching Claire run toward the front steps of the pack house.

"The full moon is in two days," Cynthia said. "I think the wolves will be trained enough. Is there anyone else that we could invite to help?"

"Do we think two witches will hold the entire pack down?" he asked.

Cynthia shrugged. "These aren't your average witches. They are old and they are into dark magic."

"And they might bring their brother, Dom. So it may be three of them," Demetria said. "We could ask Claire's dad. He's a lycan."

"That would help," Cynthia said.

"I'll go do that really quick," Demetria said. "I'll be right back." She left Demetria with Cynthia and walked into the pack house. Claire had a room with Axel on the second floor, and Demetria figured she was there.

Climbing the stairs, she walked toward Claire's room and knocked three times.

"Come in, Aunt D," she said.

Demetria chuckled as she walked into their room. Claire sat at a desk in the corner. "I'll never get used to your wolf senses," she said. "It's weird that you know I'm coming. I can't catch you doing something wrong anymore—or weird, like dancing around in your room to One Direction."

Claire laughed. "Right, because I was such a bad seed growing up. Being bullied by my mate, and hiding in my room. Dance was my only escape. Drop it."

Demetria sat down on the bed opposite Claire. "I would have tripped Axel if you would have told me."

Claire looked over her shoulder and laughed. "You can still trip him. I need a good laugh with all this drama going on."

"Speaking of," Demetria said, "I need you to call your dad, and ask if he'll come to help us."

Claire nodded. "I bet he will. We were just talking, and I think I'm right about the woman in his life. He wants to come to talk to me, this will be a great chance. I'll go ahead and text him," she said, pulling out her phone.

"While you're doing that. Anything new in the diary?"

Claire pursed her lips. "She's … she's suspicious of Ivory. It's gross, but she thinks Ivory has a crush on Ike."

Demetria cringed. "Uh, gross. They're siblings."

She shrugged. "She thinks Ivory is following her around, but she can't prove it. Aunt D, there is something else that is not right about this."

"What's that?"

"She says a cat showed up at her house, and she described it. It sounds like Kitty."

Demetria's face paled. "What did she say about the cat?"

"Nothing yet. It just showed up."

Demetria ran her palm down her face. "I tried to talk to Kitty, and his mind is blocked, Claire. What if it's the same cat?"

Claire turned all the way around to face her. "Or what if someone is inside the cat, D? Could someone do that?"

"Have you never watched 'Hocus Pocus'?"

Claire smiled. "But who could it be and what would they want?"

Demetria shrugged. "Keep reading. Find out if the cat or Ivory reveals anything to Sabrina. I'm going to go have a talk with Cynthia."

"A talk about what?" Claire asked, opening a water bottle from her desk. "I thought you were suspicious of her?"

"I don't think the reason Kitty is attacking Cynthia has anything to do with Cynthia, and everything to do with Kitty."
