Chapter 93 Chapter 92: Aaron

Chapter 93 Chapter 92: Aaron
I left the detention center feeling a weight still pressing on my shoulders. As I walked back, I sensed the tug and pull of my thoughts about the upcoming chaos at the Whispering Reef—an unease that gnawed at me. Winter needed to know, and I had to be cautious with the elders. Whatever was developing, it wasn't just the affair with Declan I had to handle. It was something much bigger lurking beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to turn everything upside down.
And pressing against the backdrop of this looming storm was my birthday, a day that should have been filled with celebration. Winter and my mother had been planning something big, though I had unfortunately caught wind of it early on. I would have been looking forward to the surprises and the joyful laughter—but now? My heart felt heavy knowing that shadows were creeping closer, and time was running out.
The grand living room of our tribe's house had become a swirl of colors and sounds. My mother had outdone herself this time—lanterns hung from the high ceilings, casting a soft, joyful glow everywhere. A huge banner hung overhead that said "Happy Birthday, Aaron!" in bright letters, as if my name itself had come alive to celebrate. Part of me wanted to roll my eyes at the display, but the strong feeling of joy drew me in.
As I stood there, pretending to be surprised when everyone shouted "Happy Birthday!" at me, confetti burst into the air like a firework display gone wild. I couldn't help but chuckle; it felt like standing in the middle of a joyful whirlwind. Of course, I let out an exaggerated gasp, grinning widely to keep up the act. I raised my glass of moonshine—a mix my folks made that could knock the socks off a bear—and took a big sip, feeling the warm burn trail down my throat.
The chatter of the party surrounded me, but I felt a strange detachment, a tug-of-war happening inside me. It was an odd mix of happiness and anxiety. I took a bite of the overly sweet cake, the icing almost sticking to the roof of my mouth, as my thoughts drifted to Winter. I received the usual gifts from friends and family—more trinkets than I could count. Some were genuinely thoughtful, but I could hardly focus on them. I made small talk, nodded, and smiled, but my mind was racing ahead to the moment Winter would arrive.
And then she did.
When Winter entered the room, she took my breath away. The sight of her in that fitted green dress, which seemed to shimmer with golden accents, made my heart race. Her red hair flowed in waves down her shoulders, making her look like a goddess or maybe some hypnotic mermaid luring me to my doom. At that moment, everyone else in the room faded into the background, just extras in a scene that only featured her.
She moved toward me, that enchanting smile blooming on her face, and suddenly the air was thick with something electric, something that wrapped around me, strengthening me against all the worries that had been gnawing at me since the last Whispering Reef's report. "Happy Birthday, Aaron," she breathed, her lips brushing against my cheek, sending sparks racing under my skin.
I grinned at her, unable to resist the magnetic pull of her presence. "You look like a vixen tonight," I teased, my voice low and playful.
"Careful, or I might just lure you away," she replied with a sly smile that could melt ice. Without missing a beat, she started to dance right there—her movements fluid and tempting—as if every sway of her body aimed to draw me into a world where shadows didn't linger in the corners. In just a few days, this shy girl transformed into a charming and confident woman, and I was amazed.
It felt like being in a dream. I moved closer, letting the murmur of guests and the thumping music fade into a distant echo. The dance floor became our small world, her laughter blending with the beat of the music. I couldn't resist twirling her playfully, feeling the warmth of her smile and the playful sparkle in her eyes.
As we danced, the worries that had wrapped around my mind—thoughts of Declan, of the dark looming just outside our happy bubble—melted away, even if only for a little while. I could almost believe we were free, unburdened from the weight of expectations and responsibilities.
But then the memory stirred, like a shadow casting doubts in the periphery. What if something came to tear us apart? The bond we had formed sometimes felt fragile, and as much as I wanted to believe we were invincible, part of me remembered Elder Eloise's warning. We were targets—this connection made us vulnerable.
"Hey," I whispered, pulling her closer, feeling the electric heat radiate between us. "What if we just… disappear for a while? Just you and me?" My heart raced at the thought of escape, of a world where nothing mattered but the two of us.
Her laughter flowed like a sweet melody, calming the riptides in my mind. "Where would we go?" she challenged, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Anywhere but here. Maybe to the bay? Just us, away from the party and…"
"And the looming darkness you keep trying to shake off?" she finished for me, and the light in her smile dimmed just a little.
I nodded, swallowing hard. "Yeah, that."
"Let's pretend for tonight," she proposed softly, her gaze locking onto mine like a lifeline against my thoughts. "Just for tonight, let's lose ourselves in the music and the magic."
I couldn't think of anything better. With a renewed sense of purpose, I leaned in and kissed her, the world around us fading away completely. As the sweet scent of her hair surrounded me, I knew—whatever awaited us outside this celebration, whatever battles we might face together—it didn't matter right now. Not when I had Winter in my arms, dancing in a whirlwind of happiness that made the threats seem like distant echoes.
"Dance with me," I said, pulling her closer again as the music swelled, the rhythm wrapping us in its spirit. I let the worries fade away, surrendering to the moment, the glow of the birthday candles, and the warmth of being just Aaron and Winter—two souls caught in a fleeting paradise. For now, I will be the reckless prince, and she, my enchanting muse—together, we'd face whatever storm awaits us tomorrow.
