Chapter 1: It Never Rains in Southern California...Right-4
I groan, I don’t want to talk to her. “Okay.” “Hi baby.” She says. “Hi Mother.” “How’s it going?” “It’s going okay. They’re all at school.” I tell her. “Oh yeah? How was the flight?” “Oh it was great. Slept like a baby the whole time.” I say, evasively. I don’t really feel like explaining the whole thing to her. “That’s good. So what are you gonna do?” “I don’t know, probably take a shower and go to sleep. It isn’t much to do in a town like Vernon.” I remind her. “You’re a bright girl McKenna, you’ll find something fun to do.” “Escape.” I mutter under my breath. “Pardon?” My mom says. “Nothing. Mom are the O’Connor’s rich?” “Well they aren’t rich, but they do have a bit of money.” “Oh.” I say solemnly. “Okay well I’m gonna let you go now. I know you probably wanna just hang out or something.” “Yeah, exactly.” I say sarcastically. “Just so you know McKenna, Phil and I will be leaving from Brazil tomorrow morning. My phone may not have service if you try to call me, but if it doesn’t, I’ll call you as soon as we get to the hotel.” She tells me. “Okay, that’s fine.” I say. “I love you McKenna. Don’t worry too much about this summer. It’ll be fun; you’ll see.” She says. “Okay sure. I love you too Mom. Tell Phil I said bye.” “I will.” I hang up my phone and unpack my charger. I plug it into the wall and connect my phone to the charger. Lightning strikes again, as I sit back on the floor and empty my second bag. It holds all the Sarah Dessen books I mentioned, and a few other books, also in it are undergarments. In the third one is my bathing suits, and my makeup and hygiene items. Ya know, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair products, make up, all that good stuff. I eat the pizza quickly because I actually am starving and I throw the paper plate in the trash in my room. I look at my phone again and see that it’s 2:53. After I’ve got all of my stuff hung up and folded in their appropriate places, I grab a white t-shirt and a pair of grey sweat pants, and leave my room, going towards the bathroom. The bathroom is large and spacious. Considering Hailey and two of her five brothers’ share it, I guess it kinda has to be spacious. I assume Hailey, and two of her brothers are the only ones living here. When I came up here, I noticed that there were four doors here just like Sarah said. Only three of them are occupied, seeing as I have the fourth one. So that must mean that three of her brothers have downstairs bedrooms along with their parents. So now that I know the O’Connor’s have money, I wonder why they only expanded the bedrooms. I wonder why they didn’t build more bathrooms on. It would have beneficial. I mean, I hate Hailey’s O’Connor’s guts, but I mean she deserves her own bathroom. I mean, doesn’t every girl? I’m an only child, so I have my own bathroom. Okay, well I’m not an only child technically, but I consider myself one. I have an older brother-Mason, but he’s a junior in college. He’s all the way across the country in Massachusetts at Amherst University. The Dallas house isn’t huge, but it’s big enough for Phil, mom and me. My bedroom’s upstairs, and my bathroom is across the hall, and Phil and mom’s bedroom is downstairs away from everything. Hailey’s crap-well I assume its Hailey’s-is spread all across the counter. She’s got so much stuff, it’s just atrocious. She’s got shampoo-which should actually really be in the shower, hair care products, makeup-so, so much makeup, lotions, and perfumes. I put down the seat on the toilet, and the toilet cover rand I put a towel and clothes on top of it. I pull off my now damp clothing and leave them on the floor. I step into the shower, and turn the water on fully blast. It shoots out of the shower head like a bullet shoots out of a gun. Fast and hard. My skin is cold due to the rain, but it quickly warms with the hot water splashing me. After I’m in the shower for a good twenty minutes, I decide to get out. I don’t wanna use up all the hot water on my first day. I get out of the shower and dry my hair first, then my body. All of a sudden, the door opens and I shriek. “Oh my God!” I shout, as I cover myself. “McKenna?” He says. “Jacob?” I shout. I mean, I know it’s him, because he looks exactly the same as he did seven years ago. “Oh God, I’m sorry. I didn’t think anyone was in here. I’m just gonna go.” He says, and with that Jacob leaves the bathroom. Lightning strikes again and thunder hits outside as the rain keeps falling. I put my hand over my heart, trying to slow the rate of it. He scared the life out of me. I mean, I thought Sarah said they were still at school! If Jacob’s here, then that means the rest of them are too. Oh God. Won’t this summer be just a bucket of fun? Note the extreme sarcasm in which I was using. -------------------------------------------------------------
