Chapter 91 The Sacrific
Lyra: POV
My heart hammered against my ribs as those footsteps grew louder, each step like a countdown to disaster.
The sound of heavy boots echoed through the corridor, getting closer with each passing second. I could feel sweat beading on my forehead as I pressed my back against the cold stone wall near our escape route.
"They're coming," I whispered, my voice barely audible even to myself.
The girls huddled together in terrified silence, their faces pale with fear. We were so close – the thunder signal had just sounded, our escape route was open, and freedom was literally steps away. Now it was all falling apart.
Aria's face suddenly hardened with resolve. She straightened her shoulders and moved toward me with determined strides.
"You must go now," she said, her voice low but firm. "All of you. I'll stay behind."
"What? No!" I grabbed her arm, horror flooding through me. "We all leave together!"
Aria pulled me aside, putting her lips close to my ear. "Nissa betrayed us. I noticed her exchanging glances with the guard this morning. She's already told them everything."
I knew; I should have realized it long ago.
"I can buy you time," Aria continued urgently. "Valen has... a special fixation on me. And the soulbound connection..." Her voice faltered slightly. "It gives me leverage he doesn't understand yet."
I shook my head violently. "No. I won't leave you to him!"
Aria's eyes softened for a moment before hardening again with determination. "I can sense he won't hurt me immediately. The soulbound connection will at least give me that protection."
Stella's voice rippled through my mind, unexpected but clear: She's right, Lyra. The soulbound connection will temporarily shield her from his worst impulses.
I wanted to scream in frustration, but the footsteps were almost upon us now. Each second we delayed put everyone at risk.
"As a Storm Hunter, I know my duty," Aria said, her eyes filled with a fierce light. "Perhaps this is why fate connected me to him – for this moment, to save these lives."
I clutched her hand, feeling tears threatening to spill. "As your friend, I can't let you sacrifice yourself like this."
The footsteps stopped outside our door. Someone was fumbling with keys. Several girls began to panic, whimpering with fear.
"If we're all caught, no one will help these girls," Aria whispered fiercely. "If you're truly my friend, take them to safety."
"Nissa..." I began, trying to process the betrayal. "How could she?"
"Valen probably offered her some tempting deal," Aria explained quickly. "She might believe he'll cure her."
I felt my star energy crackling at my fingertips, the desire to fight overwhelming me. But Stella's calming presence helped me see reason – we couldn't win this battle.
Aria moved toward the hidden door, sliding the key into the lock. The mechanism clicked open, revealing the dark passage beyond.
The girls began filing through the door, frightened but moving quickly. I remained frozen, torn between escape and staying with my friend.
Nova tugged at my sleeve urgently, trying to pull me toward the passage.
"You have to go," Aria insisted, her eyes darting toward the main door where the sounds of keys jingling grew louder.
I still couldn't move. "I can't just leave you..."
In one swift, unexpected motion, Aria channeled her wind element and pushed me forcefully into the passage. I stumbled backward, caught off guard by the sudden gust.
"Aria!" I cried out as she quickly shut the door between us, the lock clicking into place.
Through a tiny gap in the door, I could see her face one last time. I pressed my eye to the crack. "Why would you do this?" I choked out.
Aria's smile was sad but determined. "Because the Star-Chosen is more important than the Storm Lord's sister, Princess." Her voice was soft but clear through the gap. "Go complete our mission."
Tears streamed down my face as I pressed my palm against the door. "You have to stay safe. We'll come back for you."
"I'll use the soulbound connection to protect myself," she promised. "Tell my brother I found him. I'm glad we became family."
Her form disappeared from view as she turned away. I heard the main door open and voices filled the room beyond. With a heart that felt like it was being torn apart, I finally turned and faced the frightened girls waiting in the dark passage.
Nova nestled back into my sleeve, letting out a soft, comforting chirp. I could feel her sadness mirroring my own. Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to move forward, to be strong for the others even as guilt threatened to drown me.
"This way," I whispered, my voice rough with emotion. The narrow tunnel stretched before us, dark and cold, mirroring the emptiness I felt inside.
She made her choice, Stella's voice echoed in my head. Aria is brave, and the soulbound connection will offer some protection. We must focus on saving these girls now.
Each step away from that door felt like betrayal, but I pushed forward, guiding the terrified girls through the cramped tunnel. The weight of leadership fell heavy on my shoulders as I suppressed my own fear and grief.
Nova occasionally peeked from my sleeve, her faint starlight illuminating our path just enough to see. Her presence was my only comfort in the suffocating darkness of the tunnel.
My mind raced with memories of Aria – her smile, her courage, her unwavering loyalty. The thought made my chest ache with a pain sharper than any physical wound.
