Chapter 162 Bait and Trap
Chapter 162 Bait and Trap
Lyra: POV
The starlight illuminated our faces as we huddled closer, the distant mountains where the Water Temple stood appearing almost ethereal against the night sky. My suggestion to stop running and set a trap had sparked a fire of determination in everyone's eyes.
"We can't keep playing defense," I said, meeting the eyes of each person gathered around our small fire. "It's time we set the terms of this fight."
Kael nodded, his storm-blue eyes reflecting the same resolve I felt burning in my chest. "Agreed. But we need to be smart about this. Valen has resources, numbers, and territory on his side."
"What he doesn't have is stability," Aria spoke up, her voice stronger than it had been since severing her soulbond. "The connection break affected him far worse than me."
I turned to her, surprised. "How can you be sure?"
"Because I chose to break it," she explained, touching the place over her heart where the bond had been anchored. "I was the one who severed the connection. Valen was forced to endure it. That makes a difference."
Nova fluttered down from her perch, landing on my shoulder. Through our connection, she shared what she'd seen.
"Nova spotted Valen near the eastern border," I translated. "He has a gray-white scar running down the left side of his face now. And his movements are sluggish."
Aria nodded grimly. "The physical manifestation of a broken soulbond."
"He's using some kind of dark purple potion," Nova added through our link. "It makes his flames flare briefly, but they're unstable—purplish-red instead of true fire."
"Void energy," Marcus growled. "He's using it to supplement his weakened state."
Kael's expression darkened. "That's dangerous and unsustainable. It might give him temporary power, but it'll burn him out faster."
I considered our options, running my fingers along the crystal of my staff. "The Water Temple is perfect. Its crystal arrays naturally amplify elemental energy, especially water and starlight."
"Not to mention it would weaken Valen's fire element," Marcus added, sketching a rough layout in the dirt. "The central chamber with the water crystal pool—it's defensible, and the water elements will dampen Valen's fire while amplifying your starlight, Lyra."
I exchanged glances with Kael. "The temple's ancient arrays could be reconfigured to create a powerful containment field."
"Timing is crucial," I added. "Valen's weakened now, but he's adapting. If we wait too long, he'll compensate for his limitations."
The plan took shape as the night deepened. Kael and I would design the core sealing array, combining water elements with storm energy. Thor and Marcus would establish perimeter defenses. Despite her weakened state, Aria insisted on participating.
"I can still sense fluctuations in Valen's state through what remains of our connection," she explained. "Energy spikes, especially when he uses void power. That could be valuable."
"Now we need bait," Thor said bluntly.
Kael looked at me, his expression mixing concern and calculation. "We already have it. Valen and Lord Cassius want Lyra's Star-Chosen blood for their void ritual."
"So we let them think they can get it," I concluded. "We 'release' a captive—feed him false information about me attempting a strengthening ritual at the Water Temple."
Marcus nodded. "They'd believe you're trying to restore your energy after the escape and previous sealing efforts."
As dawn approached, we moved toward the Water Temple. Stella's presence in my mind grew stronger as we neared the ancient site.
Be careful, Fire-heart, she cautioned. I sense void watchers trying to pierce our defenses.
"Void scouts approaching from the northeast," I warned the others. "Two of them."
Thor's team intercepted the scouts, capturing both but deliberately allowing one to "escape" after witnessing enough of our preparations to confirm our presence without revealing our trap.
"He'll report back exactly what we want Valen to hear," Thor confirmed.
As dusk approached, Aria suddenly gasped, clutching her chest. "Valen—he's doing something. Some kind of dark ritual. The void energy around him is spiking."
"He's trying to boost his power," I interpreted. "Sacrificing long-term recovery for immediate strength. He must be desperate."
"We need to accelerate our timeline," Kael decided.
Nova returned minutes later, her mental images showing forces moving through the forest—more than we had anticipated.
"Lord Cassius is with them," I translated. "And they've brought elite guards, at least thirty."
As twilight settled over the temple, I took my position beside the crystal pool, beginning a performative "ritual." Kael and the Storm Hunters concealed themselves at strategic points. Aria's wind-carried whisper reached me: "They're here. Valen and Cassius. Strong void energy with them."
I stood tall, Tidesong Staff glowing with starlight energy, ready to face my enemies on my terms for the first time.
The temple doors swung open, and Valen entered with Lord Cassius beside him. The scar on Valen's face was partially masked by magic, but I could see how it pulled at his features. His dragon flame flickered with an unnatural purple-red hue.
Lord Cassius appeared supremely confident, carrying a strange black obsidian box. His eyes widened slightly at the sight of me alone in the chamber.
I feigned surprise and fear, backing against the pool. "You—how did you find me?"
"Did you really think you could hide from us?" Lord Cassius smiled coldly. "Especially when you're attempting such powerful magic?"
I raised my staff defensively, silently counting the seconds until our trap could be sprung. Just a few more moments...
"Now!" I shouted, bringing my staff down hard against the temple floor.
The sealing array blazed to life, runes illuminating across the floor and walls. Lord Cassius's smile never faltered. He calmly opened the obsidian box, releasing a concentrated cloud of void energy that invaded our carefully prepared runes.
"Did you think I wouldn't recognize a trap when I saw one?" he asked conversationally. "I prepared this void crystal to counter it."
Horror washed through me as I watched our sealing array being corrupted, the energies partially reversing to contain us instead of them. We were trapped in the temple with them.
But Lord Cassius wasn't unaffected. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his hands trembled slightly. The counter-spell had cost him dearly.
Valen stepped forward, struggling visibly to control the wild void energies swirling around us. His scar expanded slightly as he channeled the power, his face contorting with pain he couldn't fully conceal.
Then, through the chaos, Aria's wind-whisper reached me: "The southeastern corner—the seal is incomplete. Valen can't maintain a full barrier."
I caught Kael's eye across the chamber, and in that glance, I knew we had found our opportunity. The trap had been turned against us, but not perfectly. There was still a way out.
"Prepare yourself," I whispered to Stella as I gripped my staff tighter, ready for what came next.
