Chapter 158 Breaking the Bonds
Chapter 158 Breaking the Bonds
Aria: POV
I felt it the moment my voice echoed through the hall—something ancient stirring inside me. The pressure that had been building in my chest for months suddenly exploded outward in a surge of raw power that made the air crackle with electricity. Even the flames seemed to shrink back from me.
"Release them!" I commanded again, my voice carrying a weight I'd never heard before.
I was as shocked as everyone else. Watching Valen prepare to sacrifice my friends, something inside me just... broke free.
It's time, Aria, Zephyr whispered in my mind, her voice clearer than ever. Orion's seal is breaking. Our real power is coming back.
Valen spun around, his eyes going wide with surprise and something hungrier. The look made my skin crawl despite the heat radiating off him.
"What the hell is this?" he asked, tilting his head like I was some fascinating puzzle. His flame guards looked confused, unsure how to handle my sudden outburst. "This is how you thank me for everything I've given you? Status? Respect? My heart?"
I actually laughed at that last part, though it came out bitter and harsh. The soulbound connection yanked at me like a leash, forcing my feet to take a step toward him before I dug in my heels.
"Given me?" I shot back, electricity dancing between my fingers. The guards closest to me backed off as sparks jumped from my skin to their armor. "You've taken everything. Lives, freedom, and now you want to butcher my friends for your void masters."
Valen waved the guards back and started walking toward me, putting on that soft expression I'd learned to hate—the one he used when he wanted something.
"Look at her," he said to the room, never taking his eyes off me. "My soulbound, beautiful even when she's being difficult."
He reached out to touch my cheek. I wanted to jerk away, but the connection held me in place like iron chains. His touch sent unwanted warmth through me, the magical bond responding even though everything in me recoiled.
"I'm sorry, sweetness," he whispered so only I could hear. "But I can't let them go. What we're building—what the Void Lords will give us—it's worth any price."
His dragon soul, Emberforge, reached out through our connection, trying to wrap corrupted fire around Zephyr. I felt her fighting back, struggling against the invasion.
"Stand with me," Valen continued, his voice taking on that commanding tone that vibrated through our bond. "Be my queen in the new world. Together, with void power, we'll rule like no dragons ever have."
He leaned in to kiss me, his eyes holding that mix of possessiveness and fake tenderness that made me sick.
I turned my head away, and his lips barely grazed my cheek. As I did, a memory hit me—Orion's weathered face six months ago, deadly serious as he handed me an ancient scroll.
"This is forbidden storm dragon magic," he'd told me. "It's only been used three times in our history. Save it for when you have no other choice, child." His eyes had been so sad. "It'll rip a piece of your soul away, but sometimes losing part of yourself is better than losing everything."
I knew what I had to do.
"I reject this connection," I said, looking straight into Valen's eyes. My voice was quiet but rock-solid as I started silently reciting the ancient words Orion had drilled into me.
Valen's face shifted from confusion to pure horror. "You can't be stupid enough to..." His voice cracked as it hit him. "That's the forbidden ritual!"
I felt the spell building, feeding off the void energy Valen had been gathering. The words burned in my mind and throat as I kept going. Zephyr roared inside me, in agony but determined.
The pain started in my chest—like a knife twisting, then spreading through every nerve. I could actually see the golden threads of our connection appearing between us, stretching thin and starting to fray.
"What are you doing?" Valen gasped, grabbing my shoulders. "Stop this! You'll kill us both!"
I didn't stop. "This fucking soulbound connection," I snarled through gritted teeth. "I'm done with it!"
The pain got worse, like my body was being ripped apart from the inside. Zephyr and Emberforge were screaming on the spiritual plane, their energies locked in a vicious tug-of-war. I could see Lyra and Kael watching in horror, helpless.
With one last push of will, I finished the ritual. The golden threads between Valen and me exploded like glass, each piece turning to ash. The backlash slammed us both to our knees.
The pain was beyond description—like being thrown into molten lava while having my soul torn to shreds. I felt Zephyr's scales peeling away inside me, leaving raw, bleeding patches of spirit.
Valen was in just as bad shape. He knelt there clutching his chest, his face gray with shock and pain. His perfect composure was completely gone. For a split second, I saw real anguish in his eyes—the pain of losing something he'd thought was his forever.
"Why?" he whispered, barely audible. "Isn't being my soulmate good enough?"
"You didn't give me a choice," I managed, though talking felt like swallowing glass.
I watched his face change—grief twisting into cold rage. A thin scar appeared on his cheek in the shape of a dragon, the permanent mark of a severed bond.
"Fine," he said, his voice completely empty. "Guards, throw her in the eastern tower with her friends. Since she doesn't want to be my soulbound and queen..." He stood up shakily, forcing himself back into that regal posture. "She can serve a different purpose."
The guards nodded and dragged me away.
The trip through dark corridors was a haze of pain. When they finally threw me into a cell, I hit the cold stone floor hard, every nerve still screaming.
"Aria!" Lyra's voice cut through the fog, then gentle hands were turning me over.
I forced my eyes open to see her kneeling beside me, Kael and the other Storm Hunters crowding around. The shock on their faces told me they could see my spiritual wounds.
"What happened?" Lyra asked, cradling my head. "Your dragon soul—it's bleeding."
"I broke it," I whispered, each word agony. "The soulbound connection. I broke it."
Kael went pale. "Breaking the bond will cause massive damage to both parties."
Zephyr whimpered inside me, her form shaking but still there. We made it, she whispered. We lost pieces of ourselves, but we're free.
Free, but at what cost? As consciousness started slipping away, I wondered if I'd actually accomplished anything.
