Chapter 157 Rescue in Fire and Ash
Chapter 157 Rescue in Fire and Ash
Lyra: POV
The air grew thick and scorching as we pushed deeper into the passage, each breath a struggle against the intense fire energy. I gripped my Tidesong Staff tighter, its crystal top pulsing with blue warnings as it detected the dangerous elemental levels around us.
"The fire energy is getting stronger," I whispered to Kael, watching sweat bead on his forehead.
Be careful, Stella's voice rippled through my mind. The fire here has been tainted by void energy.
I nodded. "Stella says the fire is void-contaminated. We need to be extra cautious."
"Nova confirmed Aria's location," Kael murmured. "North Tower, top floor, ritual chamber. Can you sense her?"
I closed my eyes briefly, feeling for the connection that had formed between us. It was faint but present—like a distant heartbeat.
"Yes. She's alive, but something's wrong. Her energy feels... muffled."
Our eyes met, and determination passed between us. The soul-bond connecting us felt stronger in this moment of danger, no words needed.
Using Ryland's access badge, we bypassed three security checkpoints through maintenance corridors. At one junction, I spotted a monitoring crystal pulsing orange. I raised my staff, focusing starlight energy to interfere with its sensors—a trick only Star-Chosen blood could manage.
"Clear," I whispered. Kael moved past me to deal with two guards at the next doorway. His movements were fluid, precise. Within seconds, both guards were unconscious.
"This is going too smoothly," I muttered uneasily.
Too easily, Stella agreed. Like they're letting us walk into their trap.
Kael checked the badge again. "Service elevator ahead goes directly to North Tower." He looked up. "You feel it too? This is too easy."
I nodded, gripping my staff tighter. "But we don't have a choice."
The elevator ascended smoothly. As we neared the upper levels, we adjusted our stolen guard uniforms.
"Supply delivery," Kael rehearsed gruffly.
"Ritual assistance," I added, lowering my head submissively.
The doors opened to a busy corridor. Robed figures moved purposefully, carrying strange instruments and swirling energies. No one gave us more than a glance as we stepped out confidently.
Feel the elements, Stella guided. Look for anomalies.
I extended my senses, feeling energy currents throughout the tower. Fire dominated, but there were strange distortions. And somewhere nearby—wind elemental energy. Aria's element.
"She's close," I whispered. "This way."
We approached the final staircase, and something felt off.
"Barely any guards," Kael noted. "For someone as valuable as Aria? This doesn't make sense."
"It's a trap," I replied. "But we're walking into it anyway."
The door to Aria's chamber was unguarded but sealed. Kael used Ryland's badge, which surprisingly granted access. As the door opened, my heart lodged in my throat.
Aria was bound to the wall by chains of solidified fire energy, pulsing with unnatural purple glow—void contamination. Despite her imprisonment, her eyes remained fierce, her spine straight.
When she saw us, her eyes widened with joy and warning.
"Lyra! Kael! Be careful. Valen's been preparing a ritual. He needs Star-Chosen blood to stabilize a void gateway."
I rushed to her side, examining the energy chains. "We're getting you out," I promised, raising my staff. I channeled water element to cool the fire chains while focusing star energy to disrupt the twisted golden cord binding her soul to Valen's.
I could feel the wrongness of it—not pure soulbound connection, but something corrupted. The pain made me wince.
Kael used storm element to disrupt the chains' energy flow. Between his wind and my water, we created enough counterforce. The chains began flickering.
"Almost there," I encouraged, pouring more power into the staff.
Just as the chains dissolved and Aria slumped into my arms, Nova's urgent warning sliced through my mind: Valen's coming! With guards!
"We've got company," I relayed.
He can feel the disruption in the soul-connection, Stella added. He knows you're here.
"It was a trap," Aria confirmed, rubbing her burned wrists. "He let you find me. He needs your Star-Chosen energy."
We ducked into an adjacent storage room as the elevator chimed. Through the cracked door, I watched Valen stride in with six elite guards, holding a pulsating purple-black crystal.
His face darkened seeing the empty chains. "Search!" he commanded. He closed his eyes, concentrating—using the soul-connection to sense Aria.
"He's looking for me," Aria whispered. I took her hand, concentrating star energy into a barrier around her, disrupting his sensing ability.
"We need to split up," Kael whispered. "I'll create a diversion. You get Aria out. If separated, meet at the Star Goddess temple."
At his signal, Kael burst out, unleashing lightning that filled the floor with blinding flashes. In the chaos, I grabbed Aria and ran toward emergency stairs.
Two guards blocked our way. I swung the Tidesong Staff, releasing star-infused water that knocked them backward.
Focus, Stella urged. You're stronger than you know.
We rounded a corner and found Kael, who had circled back. But guard sounds approached from all directions.
"They've sealed all exits," Nova reported. And there's a ritual array ready in the main hall with a void energy container.
I exchanged glances with Kael. Time to fight.
We reached a central courtyard, exit tantalizingly close. But Valen appeared, fire swirling around him—not clean orange-red, but tainted with void-purple streaks.
"How touching," he sneered. "Did you think I wouldn't know your every move? Star-Chosen, you've arrived exactly as prophesied—walking willingly into my hands."
I raised my staff, feeling starlight and water elements intertwine. Beside me, Kael summoned storm lightning, our elements merging in perfect sync—a manifestation of our soul connection.
Our combined attack struck Valen, making him stagger. But he laughed.
"In my domain, you are merely embers against a bonfire."
He unleashed void-corrupted flames that rapidly ate through our defenses.
His power isn't just fire! Stella screamed. It's mixed with void energy!
Despite our efforts, we were overwhelmed. Guards surrounded us with elemental suppression chains that instantly dampened my connection to Stella.
"You will be honored guests at tonight's ceremony," Valen approached, tracing my cheek as I jerked away. "Your bloodline will stabilize the void gateway."
Even suppressed, I could feel Stella raging inside me. Through our weakened bond, I sensed Kael's message: We'll find a way out.
"Take them to the ritual hall," Valen ordered. "At sunset, not even the Star Goddess will protect you."
As we were dragged away, Aria suddenly broke free. She stood tall, her eyes flashing with determination—and something else. Her eyes weren't their normal purple but glowed with lightning-like energy.
"Let them go!" Her voice echoed with unexpected power. The air crackled with static electricity, and flames throughout the chamber flickered as if disturbed by an invisible storm.
