Chapter 156 Infiltrating the Flame Palace

Chapter 156 Infiltrating the Flame Palace
Lyra: POV

Stella's words from last night echoed in my mind as dawn broke over our makeshift camp: "True trials are just beginning, but you won't face them alone." The promise had comforted me through a restless sleep, where the word "vessel" haunted my dreams like a poisonous whisper.

I tightened my grip on the Tidesong Staff, drawing strength from its familiar energy as I watched the sunrise paint the sky in hues that reminded me of Aria's gentle smile. We'd made our vow under starlight—no matter the cost, we would rescue her from Valen's clutches.

"Ready?" Kael asked, spreading three different maps between us on the ground, his expression mirroring the same resolve we'd shared last night.

"As I'll ever be," I replied, pushing thoughts of the Void Lord's threats aside. "Let's go through this one more time. Aria mentioned Valen had recently moved her somewhere inside the palace, likely one of the towers."

Kael nodded, his storm-blue eyes focused on the palace layout. "She said it was a high place where she could see the mountains but not the city. That narrows it to the northern towers."

Nova fluttered in through a gap in the tent, settling on my shoulder. Her wings brushed against my cheek as she communicated through our mental link.

"More guards at every entrance than usual," I translated for Kael. "And the fire elemental barrier surrounding the palace is stronger than normal."

"Shit," Kael muttered, running a hand through his silver-streaked hair. "That complicates things."

We'd spent half the night debating three different infiltration plans. Now, as morning light strengthened, we needed to decide.

"I think we should combine parts of plans one and three," Kael said finally. "We get Emberscale guard uniforms first, then create a void energy disturbance to draw attention away from our actual entry point."

I nodded, feeling the weight of the Tidesong Staff in my hands. "The Staff can simulate void energy fluctuations at short range. We can use it to create a diversion."

"Perfect." Kael's expression hardened with resolve. "I'll get the uniforms. You prepare the void energy decoy. Marcus will maintain position outside the city to assist our escape."

We broke camp quickly. I spent the next hour carefully channeling tiny amounts of void energy into a crystal container, focusing the Staff's power to keep it stable. The container grew cold in my hands, purple energy swirling inside like trapped lightning.

When Kael returned, his face bore a fresh scratch along his cheekbone, but his eyes gleamed with success. He dropped two Emberscale guard uniforms at my feet, complete with insignia patches and authentication badges.

"Two guards who won't wake up for hours," he explained, touching the scratch on his face. "One of them got lucky."

"Let me see that," I said, reaching up to examine his wound.

While I cleaned the cut, Kael shared what he'd learned. "Security is triple the normal strength around the palace. Something important is happening tonight."

I adjusted the red guard uniform to better fit my frame. "These badges—what do the markings mean?"

"The three flame symbol means western quadrant patrol. The curved line indicates clearance for outer and middle rings, but not the inner sanctum or towers."

I dyed my hair fiery red with a coloring solution from our supplies, matching the distinctive shade favored by Emberscale guards.

As dusk approached, we made our way to the commercial district surrounding the palace, blending with the evening crowds. Nova provided overhead reconnaissance through our mental link.

"Southeast supply entrance," I whispered to Kael. "Fewer guards, and a delivery caravan is expected within the hour."

We intercepted a supply manifest from a distracted messenger, learning that a large shipment of food and wine was being delivered for a special occasion that night.

"This is our way in," Kael murmured, scanning the document. "We'll join the supply train."

Half an hour later, we released the void energy container in an abandoned warehouse district half a mile from the palace. The distraction worked perfectly—guards rushed toward the disturbance, allowing us to slip into the delivery caravan approaching the supply entrance.

At the checkpoint, I stepped forward with practiced authority, pretending to check manifests while Kael smoothly integrated with the servants carrying food supplies. The first barrier passed without incident.

Then came the tense moment at the second checkpoint. A senior guard stared at me longer than comfortable, his eyes narrowing slightly at my badge.

"Western patrol at the supply entrance?" he questioned, suspicious.

"Reassigned due to the special preparations," I responded firmly, flashing the forged authorization.

After a painfully long moment, he nodded and waved us through. I exhaled silently as we entered the outer ring of the palace.

Just as I approached the entrance to the main palace area, a guard stepped forward, blocking my path.

"Element verification," he announced. "All personnel must demonstrate fire element affinity before proceeding. New security measure implemented by Prince Valen last week."

My heart sank. Neither Kael nor I could fake fire element control. I glanced at him across the corridor, catching his worried look.

Before the guard could become suspicious, a violet flare of energy burst from somewhere deep in the palace. Alarms blared instantly.

"Void energy detected in the east wing!" someone shouted. "All guards to battle stations!"

Our verification guard cursed, calling to the others. "Secure the entrances! Everyone back to safety zones!" Then they rushed off, leaving us in the sudden confusion.

We seized the opportunity, moving quickly through the now-empty corridors, Nova's guidance helping us avoid the main patrol routes. I tried sensing Aria's presence, but the overwhelming fire element energy in the palace interfered with my abilities.

"There," Kael whispered, pointing to a narrow door partly hidden behind a tapestry. "Servant's passage. It could bypass the guard routes."

The passage was dimly lit and smelled of kitchen smoke. We'd traveled only a short distance when voices approached—two servants discussing something in hushed tones.

She whispered. "The ceremony tonight will change everything."

"The girl from Star Crystal Territory?" the other asked. "Will she become our princess?"

"Shh! Don't speak of it. The walls have ears."

Their footsteps faded, but their words left me cold with dread.

At the passage's end, we emerged into a quiet corridor—and found ourselves face to face with Ryland, one of Cassius's most trusted advisors. His eyes widened in shock upon seeing us.

"You!" he hissed, recognition dawning. "What is the Dragon King's command?" he demanded, testing us.

We froze, unable to answer the security phrase.

"Intruders!" he snarled, drawing his weapon and reaching for an alarm crystal.

Kael moved with lightning speed, summoning a burst of storm element that shorted out the corridor lights. In the sudden darkness, I raised my Staff, releasing a blinding flash that temporarily blinded Ryland.

Kael tackled him mid-shout, and we dragged his unconscious form into a nearby storage room. Using cords we found inside, we bound and gagged him.

"We have two hours at most before someone finds him," Kael estimated, searching Ryland's pockets.

I found a special access badge and what appeared to be a palace map. Nova warned through our link that guard squadrons were conducting a sweeping search throughout the palace.

The map showed the palace divided into four main zones. The north tower was marked as "Special Restricted Area"—exactly where Aria was likely being held.

When I examined the access badge more closely, I noticed special markings that corresponded to hidden sections of the palace.

"Look," I showed Kael. "I think these markings indicate secret passages."

After analyzing the pattern, we realized the palace contained underground tunnels that weren't on the standard map—including one that might lead directly to the north tower.

Following the badge's strange markings, we found an unassuming storage room. Pushing aside a heavy shelf revealed a hidden passage behind it.

The tunnel was damp and dark, clearly seldom used—perfect for our infiltration. Kael checked his timepiece.

"Less than an hour before he might be discovered," he reminded me.

As we ventured deeper into the passage, the air grew increasingly hot, thick with intense fire element energy that made breathing difficult. I gripped my Tidesong Staff tightly, exchanging a determined look with Kael. Whatever awaited us ahead, we were ready to rescue Aria—no matter the cost.
